Rebels right back where they want to be
There was always the worry that a month of inactivity would play its part. But just like the two Tipp games back at the start of the year, three first quarter goals provided a savage boost and renewal of confidence and when Brian Hayes finished off his second and a rebel fourth, setting up a lead standing at 4-11 to 1-11 to 31 minutes, there is no doubt the Rebels were in a commanding place and playing a dominant role in the first of the All-Ireland Senior hurling semi-finals before a full house at GAA headquarters on Saturday evening last. It was 4-13 to 1-12 at the break and whatever remote Dublin chances prevailed were ruthlessly swept aside in the opening exchanges of the turnover. Patrick Horgan and Dudsie Healy on target almost straight away before back-to-back Tim O’Mahony goals, in another glorious 10 minute spell to the end of the third quarter, widened the margin still further. Score standing at 6-17 to 2-17 to 50 minutes. More to come. There would be no let-up. Robbie O’Flynn now on for the Lisgoold man and blessed with awesome pace, works hard before picking out the dangerous Alan Connolly who duly completes a hat trick. Not his first when stretching to 7-15 to 2-19. We’re now 30 minutes into the second half. Fair to say not all Rebel players clicked. That’s a good thing heading into the big dy. Though again all changes up front clicked. Shane Kingston and Conor Lehane shared a craftily executed four point contribution and will keep every player up front on their toes. That’s how it must be. We will come back to it next week. It’s all heating up now!
Club action from East Cork playing fields
Final Division 3 Amarenco East Cork Junior Hurling League
St Catherines (0-13) 0-22 Russell Rovers (0-13) 0-17 (after extra time)
Openly described as being akin to a championship encounter and after 20 plus minutes of extra time, St Catherines eventually wore down a stubborn and tenacious Russell Rovers challenge, who had previously come close to collecting the honours earlier, before winning out this always close and exciting division 3 Junior hurling league final played at a humid and overcast Magniers Hill in Youghal on Monday evening, June 30th. Glenville/Watergrasshill official Jonathon O’Connell throwing in the sliotar exactly on the 7.30pm scheduled starting time. With the Saints settling to their task that bit quicker. Evan O’Driscoll, quick onto the ball, driving forward at every given opportunity. Leading through three unanswered points to seven minutes. Ben O’Brien among the scorers. Russell Rovers coming right into it. David Crotty very good around the middle. Scoring a trio of points. They might well have led. But Jake Bryan had other ideas between the posts. You get the picture. Pattern had been set. Russell Rovers narrowly shading it and ahead on a half time scoreline standing at 0-06 to 0-05 in a frequently close and exciting contest where both teams were often let down with the required accuracy of their shooting.
Level at 6, 7, 8, 10 and now 12 points apiece to 55 minutes, shows how difficult it was to separate two even and well matched teams. Looking ominous when Cormac Aherne, playing much further out the pitch than what the number fourteen would signify, unleashing a potential winner right on the hour mark. Russell Rovers much improved than when losing out (3-21 to 0-13) in Ballynoe from the regular encounter back on Wednesday, April 16th. Kian O’Donoghue pointing from a placed ball virtually over near the sideline straight across from the dugouts had the teams together for the eighth time pointing from a placed ball at 0-13 apiece to 64 minutes. Converting three more from frees in extra time and with rewarding, important scores forthcoming from Owen O’Neill, Gearoid O’Brien, Richie O’Connell and Diarmuid ‘Doc’ O’Connell, success for the Saints on an end 0-22 to 0-17 scoreline. East Cork Board chairperson Averil Geary (St Ita’s) making the post-match presentation. Victorious Saints’ captain Matthew Mulcahy the recipient of the Owenacurra Cup in thanking the sporting opposition and host venue on having a resplendent playing surface.

Review of Division 3 East Cork Junior Hurling League campaign
There had been games in the lead up. But the younger brigade being in Ballynoe playing St Vincents in the U14 football league while elsewhere the U18s were up in Araglin starting off their Minor football season. Chances are what you’ll remember is the fact the club standard bearers being the first choice hurling team started off their Red FM campaign simultaneously in Minane Bridge it being home venue to Tracton GAA Club. So we’re saying Sunday, March 9th saw the 2025 season kicking off in earnest. Thirty-two hours later St Catherines started the ball rolling in their division 3 East Cork Junior hurling league campaign. Playing Erin’s Own under lights above in Caherlag. Victory on a 2-19 to 1-13 scoreline. Ciaran Leamy scored the two first half goals. Success followed. Beating Cobh in their second choice pitch above under the water tower (3-21 to 2-07), defeating Carrigtwohill (2-18 to 2-08) in round 3. For a variety of reasons round 4 became the first home game encountered. Beating Russell Rovers on a 3-21 to 0-13 scoreline at a cold Ballynoe on Wednesday evening, April 16th. Evenings lengthening now. Unbeaten run terminated (3-10 to 1-14) in Rostellan on the Sunday of the May bank holiday weekend. Still, enough done. Securing a home draw with Carrigtwohill for the semi-final. Were they only introduced into the swing of things as the competition was evolving? Either way outright success at the end. That’s where you must be ahead.
Jake Bryan was the only ever present from the 37 players used by mentors Ed Kenneally, Noel Kielthy, Mike Walsh and manager Shane O’Connell. Playing every match unfolding in what turned out to be a seven game campaign from the group game to knockout stages. There were stints out the field as well as being in goals. But he was present for every match. Subsequently played in every one of them. In all 22 different players registered on the charts. Diarmuid O’Connell finished top scorer (0-10 frees) (0-02 “65”) yielding an overall tally of 0-21.
Round 6 division 2 Rebel Óg North Minor Hurling League
St Catherines 4-09 Castlelyons 6-18
Though neither outfit could be described as being fully at it yet Castlelyons absorbed their losses much the better. Winding up clear and comprehensive victors of this round 6 Minor hurling league tie when played in Ballynoe on Wednesday evening, July 2nd. Darragh Fleming, Shane Hallihan, and when making an appearance - Sam McCarthy, were all very good and well capable of splitting the posts. That said, despite the lopsided end result the home team bravely battled away. Gearoid. Sheehan pointed some great scores albeit frequently off placed balls. Sean Walsh, Tristan Clancy and Liam Moore worked hard. Eoghan O’Mahony struck for two powerfully taken goals. Still the better team won. Concluding football league tie was set for Lotabeg, grounds of Mayfield GAA Club last evening, Wednesday, July 9th. Then we’re into it. Championship, hurling, football. Every week for the next two months. No place to hide now lads.
Scorers: G Sheehan (1-04 frees) (1-06), E O’Mahony (2-00), T Clancy (1-00), L Moore, A Burke and S Walsh (free) (0-01 each).
St Catherine’s team: C Higgins, C Murray, J Kenneally, B O’Connor, C Barry, S Walsh, T Clancy, T Walsh, A Cotter, E O’Mahony, G Sheehan, L Moore, L Kilmartin, T Dee, R O’Donoghue. Sub: A Burke for R O’Donoghue (48’). Referee: Stephen Hackett (Bride Rovers).
Annual Cúl Camp
We refer to one of the most eagerly awaited events of the sporting year. That being the staging of the annual Kellogg’s Cúl Camp held in the pitches of Páirc Naomh Caitríonaigh, Baile Nua all last week. Taking in the hours of 10am to 2pm daily. Starting on the morning of Monday, June 30th right through to Friday, July 4th. Independence Day. One hundred and twenty in attendance. Requiring the presence of 10 to 12 coaches daily. Younger players taught drills, introduced to matches in hurling, Gaelic football and well as camogie and ladies football. Matches, fun and games for everyone. There was even athletics and a bit of running for everyone. Player of the Year, guest Laura Hayes was a popular visitor. Marion Morrisson opened the Saints Café on one of the days and there was a big demand for the ice cream. Another guest on the Friday was Mycro representative Peter Cody. Helping to shift a decent supply of sliotars, helmets, hurleys etc. Thankfully the weather behaved itself and held up for the five days. Head coach Shane O’Brien was well satisfied. Roll on next year.
