CO-OP SUPERSTORES PREMIER SHC ROUND ONE
MIDLETON 0-24 NEWTOWNSHANDRUM 019
The Midleton senior hurlers opened their County Senior Hurling Championship campaign on Saturday night in front of a fine crowd at a sun drenched Pairc Uí Rinn against Newtownshandrum. We played in our all black jerseys as a mark of respect to Darragh McCarthy and Ger Fitzgerald who we lost in the month of March.
We hit the ground running and were soon a couple in front before things got hectic inside the opening ten minutes when Alex Quirke received a nasty facial injury which saw him temporarily replaced by blood sub Adam Daly before Killian McDermott had to retire with a hamstring injury after scoring on his Midleton championship debut. The game settled down after that and with Conor Lehane and David Cremin leading the way up front, we led by seven at one stage before Newtown hit back and by the sound of the half-time whistle we led by five, 0-14 to 0-9.
Our first-half scores came from Conor Lehane 0-6 (0-3 frees), David Cremin 0-3, Cormac Beausang 0-2, Alex Quirke 0-1, Killian McDermott 0-1 and Mikey Finn 0-1.
The accurate Tim O’Mahony struck for the opening score of the second period from a free before the Magpies hit three white flags in a row from Sean O’Meara, Cormac Beausang and Alex Quirke to lead by 0-17 to 0-10. Newtown reduced the deficit to four with 13 minutes remaining but Midleton quickly responded with points from Alex Quirke, Pa White and Conor Leheane we always stayed at arms’ length of the North Cork men and in the end the winning margin was five points, the same as it was at half-time.
Next up is a return to Pairc Uí Rinn on Saturday, August 16 to take on Newcestown in round two at 5.15pm.
Scorers for Midleton: Conor Lehane 0-9 (0-5 f, 0-1 ‘65), David Cremin, Cormac Beausang and Alex Quirke 0-3 each, Pa White 0-2, Sean O’Meara, Tommy O’Connell, Killian McDermott and Mikey Finn 0-1 each.

CO-OP SUPERSTORES INTERMEDIATE HURLING CHAMPIONSHIP ROUND ONE
MIDLETON 0-22 MAYFIELD 0-16
On Sunday afternoon last our intermediate hurlers got their championship campaign off to a winning start against Mayfield at a sweltering Riverstown. This was a tough battle from the off and with Mayfield playing with the aid of a decent breeze in the opening period it was the City men who led by 0-5 to 0-4 after the opening ten minutes. By the 20th minute mark, with Aaron Mulcahy in excellent form from frees, the Magpies had surged into a 0-10 to 0-6 lead but there was still little to choose between the sides.
At the half-time interval the margin was still four points in favour of the Magpies, 0-13 to 0-9.
Our first-half scores came from Aaron Mulcahy 0-7 (frees), Cathal Beausang 0-3, Paul Connaughton 0-1, Thomas Dunlea 0-1 and Kian Farmer 0-1.
The second-half followed the similar lines to the second-half with the Magpies always in control but never really pulling away as they looked as they might at times. By the 43 minute mark we led by 0-18 to 0-13 and with goal chances at a premium at both sides we saw out the game well to win by six in the end, 0-22 to 0-16.
Our second-half scores came from Aaron Mulcahy 0-6 (0-4 frees), Paul Connaughton 0-1, Kian Farmer 0-1 and Killian Burke 0-1.
Next up is a meeting with Bandon in Church Road, Blackrock on Sunday, August 17 at 2pm.
