RED FM HURLING LEAGUE DIVISION 2 FINAL

MIDLETON 1-18 KILLEAGH 0-15

Our senior hurlers ended their league campaign with promotion to Division 1 and the title of Division 2 champions for 2025 after a hard-fought but deserved win over neighbours Killeagh in front of a fine crowd at a showery Castlemartyr on Sunday evening last.

There was nothing between the sides in the opening half and after the first quarter it was the men from Killeagh who led by 0-3 to 0-2. By the half-time whistle it was the Magpies who led by 0-8 to 0-6 with our white flags coming from Mikey Finn 0-4 (frees), Cormac Beausang 0-2 (0-1 free), Luke O’Farrell and Killian McDermott.

The second-half was a much more dramatic 30 plus minutes of hurling but the third quarter followed the pattern of the opening half with little to choose between the two teams.

Killeagh started the second period brightly and led by 0-10 to 0-8 after 37 minutes and they led by 0-12 to 0-10 when the game really bolted to life when referee Fahy issued straight red cards to Midleton forward Alex Quirke and Killeagh goalkeeper Philip O’Neill.

This seemed to spur Midleton into life and four points on the bounce soon saw us lead by 0-14 to 0-12.

Then came the really crucial score of the game on 54 minutes when David Cremin set up Mikey Finn for the game’s only goal. From there on it was really a tale of the two goalkeepers as the Killeagh sub goalie made a great save from a Mikey Finn penalty and in stoppage time Bryan Rossiter made an outstanding save to deny Ryan McCarthy a certain goal.

The final action of the game, deep in stoppage time, saw Killeagh reduced to 13 men.

After the game, Cork County Board Chairman, Pat Horgan presented the cup to Midleton captain, Luke Dineen.

Next up is the opening round of the championship, on Saturday, August 2 in Paric Ui Rinn against Newtownshandrum. We also have Newcestown and Charleville in our group.

Everyone involved with the senior and intermediate panels would like to wish the very best of luck to Conor, Tommy and Bríon in Sunday’s All-Ireland Final and to all the Cork players and management.

Scorers for Midleton: Mikey Finn 1-10 (0-9 f, 0-1 ‘65), Cormac Beausang (0-1 f), Luke O’Farrell 0-3 each, Killian McDermott, Ross O’Regan 0-1 each.

MIDLETON: Bryan Rossiter; Seannaidh Smyth, Eoin Moloney, Tadhg O’Leary Hayes; Luke Dineen, Ciarmhac Smyth, Ross O’Regan; Sean O’Meara, Mikey Finn; Killian McDermott, Alex Quirke, Luke O’Farrell; Pa White, Cormac Beausang, Cormac Walsh. Subs: David Cremin for Walsh (42), Evan McGrath for White (57), Adam Daly for O’Meara (60).
