Killeagh GAA Club Notes June 29th 2025

CLCG Cilliath, Nuacht an Chlub, Meitheamh 29 2025

CAROLINE WALSH RIP

We begin our notes this week with a sincere expression of condolence to the Walsh family, brothers Colin, Aaron and Daniel who are all highly valued players on our adult teams, and their dad Diarmuid, on the sad passing of their mum and wife Caroline. Condolonces to the wider Walsh and Broderick families also. Caroline was a great supporter of Killeagh GAA and was very involved in organising social functions and medal presentations for many juvenile teams, as well as assisting on registration days before the advent of online registration. Ar dheis Dé go raibh sí.

IT’S THAT TIME OF YEAR! Killeagh GAA Golf Classic at West Waterford Golf Club

We are now into the final days ahead of the 29th Annual Killeagh GAA Golf Classic and there are some tee times remaining on the timesheet.  The annual event which is held at the beautifully aligned West Waterford Golf Club, the home of PGA Tour winner Seamus Power, will host the Killeagh GAA club who will have over 130 teams partaking over the four days of competition from Wednesday July 9th to Saturday July 12th.

Many players who have taken to the fairways and greens down at the Coolcormuck Valley course have stated that it is in pristine condition in recent weeks. Let’s hope the weather conditions will be very suitable across the four days.  We still have some availability for those who wish to be sponsor of a Tee Box (€70). If you wish to avail of one of these spaces, please contact Ray at 087-2330054 or any Executive Committee member.

All funds raised go towards the continuing development of our facilities at Páirc Uí Chinnéide, of which there have been many, courtesy of the superb work from our grounds volunteers who have recently undertaken a massive clean-up and facelift around the grounds. If you are interested in playing with your team of 3 (champagne scramble format), please contact Ray Rochford on 087-2330054 as soon as possible. Thank you to all those who have supported us to date with teams and sponsorship. We look forward to meeting you over the four days! Don’t delay, see you on the fairway!

MATCH REPORTS

Red FM Division 2 Hurling League Midleton 0-21, Killeagh 1-21 June 27th 2025

Red FM Division 7 Hurling League Diarmuid Ó Mathúna’s 3-22 , Killeagh 3-15, June 29th 2025

Our two county league hurling teams wrapped up their campaigns this weekend, with our Division 2 team away to Midleton on Friday evening in a must-win game and our Division 7 team making the long trip to Castletownkinneigh in West Cork on Sunday morning for a game of no consequence in terms of league placings but an important one nonetheless. Friday night saw a large attendance at Clonmult Park with Aidan Hyland i lár na páirce leis an fheadóg. The first quarter was an uneventful shadow boxing exercise after which Midleton led by 0-04 to 0-03. The two most notable features were that it took senior debutant Barry Walsh just 47 seconds to score his first point and that Philip O’Neill kept us afloat with a point-blank save after 11 minutes. The second quarter saw both teams hit top gear, with points from Sean Long, Andy Walsh and three from Ryan McCarthy, added to four more frees from Barry, giving us a two point half-time lead – 0-12 to 0-10. By the 41st minute, our lead was five (1-15 to 0-13), after Dave Buckley’s excellent catch and pass to Barry saw him raise the only green flag of the evening. Dinny Walsh’s forced withdrawal at half time had led to a reshuffle, with Allen Keniry introduced into the full back line, and Brendan Delaney taking on the scuabadóir role. Brendan mopped up everything across the half-back line in the second half and distributed very effectively, so that even when Midleton reduced the margin to one on 53 minutes, that was as close as they got. Barry finished with 1-14 in total, an impressive total for anyone on their first day out, while the outstanding Sean Long’s second point on 55 minutes was another key moment. When a late Midleton attempt at a goal which would have given them a draw and knocked us from second to third in the table was repelled and followed immediately by Aidan Hyland’s final whistle, the significance dawned on our players, management and supporters. We had beaten the mighty Magpies in their own patch and thereby qualified by virtue of a better scoring difference than Erins Own for the Division 2 league final against ….. Midleton! Regardless of the result in that one, we will play Division 1 League next year. Now that’s progress in anyone’s book! Well done everyone!

Team: Philip O’Neill, Darragh O’Brien, Pa O’Brien, Brendan Delaney, Robbie Treacy, Dinny Walsh, Andy Walsh, Sean Long, Cathal Fitzgibbon, Ryan McCarthy, Richie Long, Shane Smiddy, Gary Leahy, Barry Walsh, Dave Buckley, Allen Keniry, Sean Walsh.

Our Division 7 team made the long trek to Castletownkinneigh (a 90-minute each way trip rivalling Meelin for longest journey in a league where we also travelled to Killavullen, Ballinora and Nemo Rangers) on Sunday morning to take on already promoted Diarmuid O’Mathúna’s. Special credit to Robbie Treacy who played a full 60 minutes after doing the same on Friday evening, and Allen Keniry who added 60 to his 30 on Friday. A good performance saw us lose by seven points but score 3-15, with goals from Aaron Walsh, Paudie Mackey and Dan Landers. Well done lads, focus now turns to the East Cork championship and the quest to retain the coveted Jamesy Kelleher which starts with a very challenging task against Cobh in Midleton on August 4th. Drive on lads!
