St John’s Festival Football Blitz a Huge Success in Glenville

Glenville GAA was the heart of the action last weekend as the club hosted a hugely successful St John’s Festival Football Blitz, bringing together players of all ages — from U6s to seasoned veterans — in a celebration of football, fun, and community pride.

The grounds were buzzing all weekend, with a packed schedule of matches featuring underage teams from U6 right up to U17, as well as the fantastic Golden Oldies Blitz which brought a brilliant mix of energy, humour, and nostalgia to the pitch. Six adult teams took part in the Golden Oldies event, with great football and even better banter on show, proving that age is just a number!

Saturday morning saw Glenville welcome teams from across the region for underage blitzes, with glorious sunshine providing the perfect backdrop for a festival of football. From the youngest stars enjoying fun games and tug of war challenges, to competitive contests and silverware at U15 and U17 level, there was something for everyone to enjoy.

The club would like to sincerely thank all visiting teams, referees, coaches, and volunteers who contributed to such a memorable weekend. A special word of appreciation goes to the organising committee and grounds crew for their tireless work behind the scenes, especially Richie Cahill and Joanne McHugh, whose leadership and dedication were central to the event’s success.

The festival was a proud showcase of what Glenville GAA stands for — inclusion, participation, and community spirit — and will live long in the memory for all involved.

Golden Oldies Blitz – Football, Friendship & Fierce Competition in Glenville

Glenville GAA played host to a superb Golden Oldies Blitz on Sunday morning, with six teams from across Cork delivering a feast of football and fun. Played in a 7-a-side format with rolling subs, short halves, and big heart, the Blitz was a celebration of community, inclusion, and the enduring love of the game.

The teams — Glenville, Russell Rovers, Laochra Aeracha, Aghada, Fermoy, and St. Catherine’s — were split into two groups, with Shield and Plate finals following the group stages. Here’s how the action unfolded:

Group 1 Match Reports

 Glenville 1-3 Russell Rovers 4-4

Glenville started brightly in the opening game, but Russell Rovers' experience and sharpness shone through. The East Cork men were clinical in front of goal, punishing turnovers and creating space with clever off-the-ball runs. Glenville battled gamely, with a fine individual goal in the second half, but Rovers’ four-goal haul gave them a commanding win.

 Laochra Aeracha 4-10  Glenville 4-08

An end-to-end classic with ten goals and some of the best football seen all day. Glenville flew out of the blocks with early goals, but Laochra Aeracha — playing in their distinctive red MTU tops — showed serious style in possession. Glenville struck again late on to make it a two-point game, but Laochra’s ability to tap over points under pressure was the key.

Group 2 Match Reports

Aghada 3-8  Fermoy 1-9

Aghada made an early statement with a confident win over Fermoy. Quick ball movement and clever hand-passing carved open the Fermoy defence for three first-half goals. Fermoy rallied with a goal and several points, but Aghada’s composure and structure saw them home.

 Fermoy 1-9  St. Catherine’s 2-5

Arguably the most balanced group game of the day. Catherine’s started stronger, netting twice inside five minutes. Fermoy responded with a wave of points, slowly closing the gap. In the final minutes, both sides had chances to win it, and Fermoy prevailed by the narrowest of margins.

Shield Semi-Final 1:
Laochra Aeracha 4-8  St. Catherine’s 2-5

Laochra Aeracha booked their place in the Shield Final with a strong win. Their first goal came from a lightning-quick counterattack and set the tone. Catherine’s responded well and found the net twice, but Laochra Aeracha's second-half display was all class — patient build-up, accurate shooting, and rock-solid defending.

Shield Semi-Final 2:
Fermoy 5-7  Glenville 6-3

An all-time blitz classic. Glenville’s forwards were electric, hitting six goals with precision and flair. Fermoy, however, played the long game — building up points and keeping their shape. With the scores tied late on, Fermoy worked a patient final attack and slotted over the winning point to edge a one-point thriller.

Plate Final:
Laochra Aeracha 3-7  Fermoy 4-3

What a final! Fermoy stormed ahead with two early goals, looking likely to claim silverware. But Laochra Aeracha never panicked. They chipped away with points and found a vital third goal in the final minutes. Fermoy had one last chance, but their shot drifted wide — and the Plate was headed to Laochra.

Shield Final: Aghada 4-9  Russell Rovers 1-9

Aghada delivered their most complete performance of the day in the Shield decider. From the first whistle, they were sharp, organised, and clinical. Russell Rovers dug deep, finding a goal late on, but Aghada had already built an unassailable lead — and were deserving Shield champions.
