Castlelyons Notes (20th Jun)

  • Jun 20,2025

Our Junior Footballers in Championship semi final on Friday 20th June.

We are in action again this year in junior football and have entered a Junior C team in the confined championship. After good wins over Grange and Castletownroche we are now down to play Lough Rovers in Whitechurch on Friday 20 th June at 7.45pm.

Tickets for this game are pre purchase online via the following link https://gaacork.ie/tickets/ .  On checking into the link it is noted with some dismay that the tickets for this game are €12.83 for and adult and €10.69 for a Student or OAP.  The sum of €12.83 seems very dear to go online and purchase a ticket to see a seventh grade championship game in Cork while it coses only €37.00 more to see a Munster senior hurling final.  Anyway lets hope that we get good support for the footballers and management who are making a great effort to get junior football going again in Castlelyons.  Best of luck lads.

Junior Hurlers in East Cork League Final.

Carrig na bhFear conceeded their league game to us last Sunday which is not the best way to wind up the league season.  However well done to our team and management as we are now in the final of the East Cork Division 2 hurling league.  We played seven games with  five wins and losing two. Fr O’Neills and Midleton were the same as us.  So then Fr O’Neills were table topers on plus five with Castlelyons second on minus two and Midleton third on minus three and losing out for the final. Our game in the final versus Fr O’Neills is down for the weekend of the 29th June.  We may not be favourites but we have turned in some great games and are well up for a hand on the Mossy O’Sullivan cup. Best of luck to the team and management.

Rebel Óg East Division Two Under 14 Championship

Castlelyons 3-11 Bride Rovers 5–17

Our  Under 14’s travelled to Rathcormac for the final group game of the football championship. Both teams  were already qualified for semi finals this was for top spot in the group. The Rovers started well with an early goal but Castlelyons kept it tight and there was still only a goal between the sides after 15mins.  However, they pushed on and at half time we trailed by eight points. Castlelyons came storming back at start of the second half to reduce the deficit to just two points. Both sides picked off some nice scores and with 12minutes left the scores were level.

Then there was a big turnaround as we has a great opportunity of a goal but it was cleared and the Rovers came up field and banged in a goal.  They dominated the final quarter to run out comfortable winners.  Strong for us on the night were Ned Condon,  Christopher O Sullivan and Cionnath Cotter.  The lads have played well overall in the championship which was on a mini league format.  They had wins over Cobh and Fr O’Neills and now go on to the semif final versus the winners on the other side on a date to be arranged.  Well done to our team and management.

Team: Dylan Barrett, Jack Cronin, Carter Clegg, Tadgh Hickey, Robbie Wallace, Ewan Mc Carthy, Jimmy O Riordan, Ned Condon, Christine O Sullivan, Ryan Wallace, Cionnath Cotter, Tom Barry, Liam Martin, Josh Kinnane, Cathal Henley, Bobby Hosford.

Rebel Óg Under 12 Grading Leaguje.

Castlelyons 4-13 St Vincent's 0-5

Our Under 12 footballers were away to St Vincent's in their last Grading League Football game on Sunday and had a great win. Playing against the wind in the first half, some strong defending from Liam Martin, Eoghan McCarthy and Jack Cronin helped to keep St Vincent's to just four points. We had scores from Dara Mccarthy, Cìan O’Donovan, Robbie Wallace and Rìan Fitzgerald to lead at halftime 2-4 to 0-4 points. After a few of switches at halftime the boys played fantastic football in the second half, working the ball well together and with Fionn O’Neill and Luke Dolan joining the attack we got a great goal from Liam Cashman. Callaghan McCarthy got a lovely point but St Vincent's kept going and only for some good goalkeeping from Flynn Murphy it cold have been much closer. Another goal from Dara and few points from Robbie, Rìan and Cìan saw us finish out the game well.

It's back to Hurling next weekend with the start of phase two. After a very good phase one, we are going up a level but no doubt this young team will give it their all. Well done boys, keep up the practicing at home

Minor Challenge versus Fermoy in Castlelyons.

Our minor hurlers played Fermoy in a challenge on Monday evening.  This was for players not involved with exams.  We were down Sean O’Callaghan, Sean Óg McGuire and Tom O’Neill while it was good to see Alex Quirke back after injury and young Sam McCarthy having an outing with the minors after a lengthy injury too. Fermoy were without their county minor star Ruairc Donovan and a few others through exams and injuries. The game was lively with some good hurling and they were level at half time 0-9 to 1-6 with the final score 2-18 to 1-16.  They play  first round of the championship versus Wednesday 16th June at 7.30pm in Mayfield.  However they play St Catherines in an important league game in Ballynoe on Wednesday 2 nd July at 6.30pm. and they have a football leaue game versus table toppers Bride Rovers on Wednesday 9th July.  So plenty of action and training for our minors in the coming weeks.

Camogie Under 14B County League Semi Final

Castlelyons 4-9 Newcestown 4-6

Ourunder fourteen girls hosted Newcestown on Sunday afternoon in glorious sunshine. The visitors started the stronger and raced into an early seven point lead. However Castlelyons settled into the game and showed great character to go into break only three points down.

Castlelyons started the second half with a great goal which was quickly matched by Newcestown. Both teams exchanged scores  in a highly entertaining game. Castlelyons edged into the lead with the final whistle approaching with everyone giving their all. Newcestown went all out for a goal in the closing seconds but great defending and goalkeeping saw Castlelyons get the deserved win.

Castlelyons will now play Bishopstown in the league final on the Sunday 22nd June in Castle Road, Blackrock at 10.30am.  Out with the flags and onwards to Castle Road on Sunday as your support for the girls is appreciated.

Great win for Under 13 Ladies Footballers

Our Under 13 girls have qualified for the final of the League with a storming win over Grenagh 4-6 to 3-5 in the semi-final.  They trailed nine points halfway through the second half but played some great stuff to recover and clinch victgory.  These girls have gone through the season unbeaten to date.  They now play Kilmackeba in the final with Saturday 21 st June a possible date although details not available to date.  Best of luck in the final girls.

Mixed luck for Cork teams at the weekend.

In an exciting week end for Cork teams our senior footballers advanced to the All Ireland Qualifiers with a well merited win over Roscommon in Portlaoise on Saturday.  We have heard of some criticism of Cork football and the need for a review in recent times but if Cork could string two good days together they could confound the critics.  On March 1 Roscommon defeated the Rebels by fourteen points in the league in Cork so an in fairness this was a great turnaround in Portlaoise. So its back up the road on this Saturday 21st June at 6.15pm to Páirc An Chrócaigh for a crack at the Dubs in the premliminary quarter final of the All Ireland SFC.  Best of luck to the team and management.  Dublin play Limerick in the All-Ireland SHC beforehand at 4.15pm in an attractive double header.  This Cork game is listed fr showing live on GAA Plus as was the Roscommon game and watching the Roscommon game there was a big freeze for a while with an apology on the screen.  So, hopefully GAA Plus will be fully repaired if you cannot make the game. The Limerick v Dublin game is live on RTE Sport.

The semi final of the Electric Ireland Minor Hurling Championship, between Cork and Clare in FBD Semple Thurles on Sunday was an outstanding game.  The side were level eleven times.  While some of the Cork stars did not fire on the day Lisgoold man Colm Garde, Cormac Deane, Eoghan O’Shea and Craig O’Sulivan did very well.  Denis Fitzgerald of Bride Rovers man did very well at full back considering he was marking Clare star Paul Rogers as he limited him to just two points from play and Clare did not score a goal.  Overall, Clare drove on harder in the second half to snaffle up some great scores with Dara Kennedy  from Ballyea, Tony Kelly’s club, outstanding at centre back and won it by just two points.  While it may be a slight shock that Cork were beaten they have some great players and no doubt we will see many of them coming through the ranks to senior level into the future.
