One game still to be played in division 4 of the county hurling league
Now then, just over two weeks remain to that eagerly awaited All-Ireland Senior hurling semi-final. Opponents will be known this weekend. Hindsight is a wonderful thing. You have the Cork football draw by now. This week’s report submitted before 8.30am on Monday morning just over. At club level, a narrow one point win below in Cloughduv in round 8 of the division 4 county hurling league. A credit to themselves again were the U14s, this time in the football championship but without success. A draw against St Vincents not good enough. Read on.
Parent club action from the field of play
Round 8 division 4 Red FM County Hurling League
Cloughduv 0-23 St Catherines 2-18
First win in 3 matches and third in all, Tracton game being a draw as the Saints brought their tally to 7 points from 8 outings following this division 4 league tie in sunny conditions at Cloughduv on Sunday morning last at 11.30am. Uncanny with last year’s meeting between the same two teams also being a round 8 fixture, played on exactly the same weekend. Again won by the Saints on a 1-18 to 2-13 scoreline though played in Ballincollig on Friday evening, June 14th 2024. Cloughduv were making the livelier start here too. Though early domination wheeled in when goalkeeper Stephen O’Donoghue failed to control a proving Kyle Wallace delivery for the game’s and the Saints’ first goal and equalising score at 0-06 to 1-03 on 13 minutes. Aidan Twomey and accurate free taker Mark Verling kept the scoreboard ticking over for the opposition. Likewise James Neville, James Hayes and Kevin Barry from the frees for the Saints. It was 0-15 to 1-09 at the interval. Cloughduv ahead.
Now favoured by the conditions as the Saints went about clawing back that 3 point deficit. Rewarded by early Matthew and Brian Mulcahy points. Before a timely Sean O’Donoghue blockdown led to the second goal and a lead of 2-13 to 0-16 now 10 minutes into the second half. Teams were subsequently level at 2-14 and 2-16 to 0-22. Before Mark Verling tied it up for the eighth time with his 11th pointed free. A minute overtime. Goalkeeper Eoin Davis struck the winning point from a lengthy free on 66 minutes. Ninth and final fixture in division 4 of the county hurling league is against Bishopstown and will be played on Sunday morning, June 29th in Ballynoe at 11.30am.

Juvenile section
Round 3 division 2 Rebel Óg East U14 Football Championship
St Catherines 3-11 St Vincents 5-05
Though initially encountering the elements, that said, it was the Saints settling lively and making the better start to this round 3 juvenile championship tie played at an overcast Ballynoe on Friday evening last at 7.30pm. Team captain Sean O’Keeffe one of the early scorers. Also involved before Dylan Rahal was able to pick his spot and neatly stow away the opening goal. As did David Temple four minutes later and it was 2-03 to 0-02 just to the end of the opening quarter. Losing their way a little after that and with full forward Sean Crean a regular and constant threat Vincents had turned it around and were ahead on a 4-04 to 2-04 half time scoreline.
St Catherines, who lost out (6-07 to 3-08) to the same opposition in their opening league fixture back on Sunday morning, March 9th tried their utmost to claw back a now 6 point deficit. Cian Fitzgerald and Gary Leahy are strong and were defending well and getting movement into the attack now boosted by the introduction of pacy substitute Liam O’Keeffe whose point cut the deficit to 2 points at 4-04 to 2-08 to 47 minutes. That said Chris McCarthy was very reliable between the Vincents’ posts and looked to be in a ferocious strong place after Lenix Leahy finished off his third goal three minutes later. But the score of the hour came about when Kenneth O’Connell goaled a piledriver late on just before Noah Keane levelled up matters again very near the finish. Concluding their group with three points from as many matches.
Scorers: N Keane (0-01 free) (0-05), K O’Connell, D Rahan and D Temple (1-01 each), S O’Keeffe (0-02) and L O’Keeffe (0-01). St Vincent’s scorers: S Crean (2-05), L Leahy (3-00).
St Catherine’s team: S Maguire, J Mulkerrins, O Feeney, C Fitzgerald, A Coakley, S Moore, A O’Gorman, K O’Connell, G Leahy, O Sheehan, N Keane, Z Pyne, D Temple, S O’Keeffe (team captain), D Rahal. Subs: L O’Keeffe for D Temple (second half), O O’Farrell for A Coakley (34’), A Coakley for Z Pyne (55’). Also: B Coakley, T Shiels, J Bryan and R Molloy. Referee: Tadg O’Connor (Killeagh).

Against who should be known after this weekend’s quarter finals which feature Galway v Tipperary and Dublin v Limerick. Also going forward into a preliminary quarter final are the Cork Senior footballers. Draw was to go out live on RTE Radio 1 on Monday morning just gone, round about 8.35am You are now blessed with hindsight regarding opposition knowing Cork will once again be playing its part but Clare were a tad sharper and overcame the Rebels in the second of the All-Ireland Minor hurling semi-finals played in Thurles early on Sunday afternoon last. They now play Waterford in this year’s All-Ireland Minor hurling final.
