Castlemartyr Record Another Impressive Win
Division 5 League
It was a busy past weekend across all divisions of the RED FM County hurling Leagues, but still lots to play for going into the final round of matches in under two weeks' time.
Castlemartyr posted another impressive league win in division 5 when running out winners by 2-27 to 0-13 against Kilbrittain in Saturday's clash at Paddy Walsh Memorial Park.
In a rearranged team Biran Lawton moved to centre back to replace the unavailable Darragh Joyce, whilst Joe Stack returned to the attack following injury.
The "Reds" were always in control and marched into an 0-11 to 0-2 advantage by minute twelve before adding further gloss to an excellent first half show with goals from Billy McGann and Joe Stack.
A string of well taken points - with Barry Lawton, Ciarán Sice, Mike and Andrew Kelly to the fore, embellished the opening thirty minutes to leave them 2-22 to 0-5 ahead at the interval. Andrew looked particularly sharp, continuing his rich vein of recent form. However, the point of the game was scored by corner back Conor Whyte, who was involved in a sweeping movement on a number of occasions before landing a huge long ranger.
The same intensity obviously was not quite seen after the break and in the end the winning margin turned out to be a handsome twenty points.
Team - Brian Smiddy, Conor Whyte, Cathal Martin, Darragh Leahy, Barra O'Tuama, Brian Lawton, Charlie O'Neill, Ciarán Sice, Mike O'Dwyer, Mike Kelly, Billy McGann, Jack McGann, Joe Stack, Barry Lawton and Andrew Kelly.
Subs used - Liam Martin, Odhran Cantwell, Cian Murphy, Declan Kelly, Darragh Cashman and Dave Lawton
Mayfield In Final Match
Mayfield - away, represents the last outing of the round robin campaign for Castlemartyr. However, the chances of promotion were dented over the weekend as our nearest challengers Aghabollogue and Ballyhea both won. It means Castlemartyr must win in Mayfield and rely on Erin's Own, also doing them a big favour against Ballyhea. Although a Castlemartyr win in isolation would leave them level with Aghabollogue in second place, even if Ballyhea win and go to top (14 points) - the head to head would give the nod to Aghabollogue despite our vastly superior scoring difference. The Mayfield match is scheduled for Sunday week at 11.30am at the city venue.
Championship On August 1st
Our intermediate championship on Thursday July 31st is in Youghal against Kilworth. Ballinhassig at Pairc Ui Rinn on Sunday, August 17th (2.15pm) and Ballincollig in Carrigtwohill at 2pm on Sunday September 7th are the other group fixtures.
Junior Championships
At junior level, the first defence of the Football Championship is against the previous year's winners Lisgoold in Midleton on the weekend of July 18th-20th. The fixture will be confirmed following Cork's All Ireland hurling semi final on July 6th.
Meantime our junior hurlers have their opener against Aghada in Cloyne on Sunday August 10th.
Abernethy Cup
The Abernethy Cup Final was a great occasion on Monday and our facilities looked in superb shape - compliments to all involved. Well done to Barry, Brian and Cathal on the field of play and to our man in the middle JImmy Smiddy who had a great game in his rapidly developing refereeing role.
Golf Classic
With 4 weeks to go, the efforts of the Golf sub committee and wider club continue as we strive to make this year's event the biggest and best yet. Thanks to all who have sourced teams and tee boxes. Again, we appeal to all our members to keep up the momentum over the next few weeks. Our two big projects are a new gym and a new meeting/function/ kitchen area. Please play your part by helping drive on our latest development plans. Friday 18th is looking almost full on the timesheet, with more room on both the previous two days. Remember, it's €200 per team or €50 each per tee box. Every team and/or the tee box is crucial. More information from Christy O'Sullivan or John Cashman.
