Killeagh GAA Club Notes June 15th 2025

CLCG Cilliath, Nuacht an Chlub, Meitheamh 15 2025

CONGRATULATIONS TO BEN, COMISERATIONS TO CORMAC

Congratulations to Ben Geary who was Player of the Match in the Celtic Challenge Final which was played in Semple Stadium recently. Ben joined the Cork White team as the semi-final stage in this competition and was central to his team’s success – they beat Limerick by 6-24 to 5-13 in the semi-final and Tipperary Gold by 1-17 to 0-15 in the final, where Ben scored ten points. The Celtic Challenge has been a brilliant innovation for the GAA as it has enabled player development across all 32 counties, with 38 teams in all participating.

On the flip side, commiserations to Cormac Deane and the Cork minor hurlers who bowed at the All-Ireland semi-final stage in Semple Stadium, losing to Clare by 0-27 to 1-22. The Banner and the Déise will now form a novel pairing for the Irish Press Cup in two weeks’ time. Cormac has had a fantastic campaign with Cork and we are certain it won’t be the last time he’ll wear the Blood and Bandage.

MATCH REPORTS

Red FM Division 7 Hurling League Killavullen 1-20, Killeagh 3-12, June 13th 2025

Red FM Division 2 Hurling League Valley Rovers , Killeagh 3-15, June 15th 2025

East Cork Amarenco Division 2 Hurling League Midleton 2-20, Killeagh 1-16, June 15th 2025

An extremely busy weekend of hurling action saw all three teams on the road, with a particularly challenging Sunday for our hardworking rúnaí Mary and her namesake assistant.

Our slim chance of qualifying for the Division 7 final and gaining promotion to Division 6 slipped past our Junior A team as table-toppers Killavullen prevailed on a wet Friday evening last by the banks of the Abhann Mór. Diarmuid O Mathuna’s subsequent victory guaranteed them second place, making the final game one of no particular consequence in terms of the league table now.  Trailing by five at half time, three second half goals from Dara Motherway, Dan Landers (a penalty converted after he had been fouled) and Gary Leahy gave us a three-point lead with eight minutes remaining, but five points unanswered gave Killavullen victory, reprising their 2024 county semi-final win. Allen Keniry, Paudie Mackey and Gary Leahy were the best on the night.

Team: Colin Walsh, Ritchie Landers, Christy Coughlan, Allen Keniry, Robbie Treacy, Kevin Murphy, George Walsh Wallace, Mikey Fitzgerald, Sean Walsh, Keane Budds, Jamie Fogarty, Dan Walsh, Paudie Mackey, Dara Motherway, Gary Leahy, Dan Landers, Dan Smiddy, Matthew Murphy, Aidan Morrison.

Sunday morning on Father’s Day saw us make the trip west to Brinny to take on the other green and white hurlers, Valley Rovers. On a windy day, Valleys made a quick start and led by 1-07 to 0-01 after the first quarter. We managed to reduce the margin to seven by half time – 1-10 to 0-06 – but fell further behind – 1-12 to 0-08 after 38 minutes. From there on we scored 1-04 without reply to level the match with Richie Long scoring the goal on 47 minutes. Valleys scored three points on the bounce before we again took over, with Ryan McCarthy and an Evan Lane brace levelling the match. The final critical play in the match saw Colm Leahy get a flick to a Ryan McCarthy side-line delivery to give us a great on-the-road victory which consolidates our third place in the league. With our final match away against Midleton on Friday June 27th, a victory there, along with an Erins Own draw or win in their final game would see us qualify for the final and earn promotion to Division 1. Big jeopardy! Not bad!

Team: Philip O’Neill, Darragh O’Brien, Pa O’Brien, Allen Keniry, Brendan Delaney, Dinny Walsh, Sean Long, Cathal Fitzgibbon, Evan Lane, Ryan McCarthy, Richie Long, Shane Smiddy, Colm Leahy, Sean Walsh, Andy Leahy, Andy Walsh, Dave Buckley, Robbie Treacy.

Our Junior B hurlers completed their East Cork Division 2 league campaign away to Midleton on Sunday afternoon, where the hosts came out on top after a strong opening half saw them lead by 2-11 to 0-08 at the sos beag. Our team battled strongly in the second half and Dave Ogbebor raised our only green flag, but this result means our third team will play in Division 3 of the East Cork League in 2026.

Team: John O’Connor, Paul Keniry, Conor Meade, Aidan Morrison, Ben Budds, Kieran Lane, Dan Smiddy, Ger Collins, Aaron Fitzgibbon, Dan Landers, Padraic Carroll, Darragh O’Connor, Ciaran O’Rourke, Diarmuid Buckley, Dan Walsh, Ian Landers.
