Castlelyons GAA Notes week ended 2.6.25.
Second league win for our senior hurlers.
Cork Red FM Division 3 Hurling League
Castlelyons 2-18 Lisgoold 0-20
This game was played in our new pitch on Thursday evening last before a sizable attendance. This was a vital round of the Red FM hurling league division 3 for us as a win was important to preserve our status. The fact that we were playing our neighbours lisgoold who are going very well these time added a bit of bite to the game too. Alan Fenton had a point for us almost from the throw in, but Lisgoold levelled and went ahead. Brian Spillane goaled for us, and it was level pegging 1-4 to 0-7 after 15 minutes. Lisgoold had a lot of possession but gradually Alan Fenton and James Kearney began to come into the game a lot as our backs were under serious pressure but defended well. Matthew Rosner had to come off injured and was replaced by Brian Carroll. John Cashman was accurate from frees for them and Cormac Callaghan moved about their forward line to good effect. We lead at half time as Alan Fenton nudged us in front with a point from a free 1-10 to 0-12.
There was some patches of great hurling in the second half as both teams tried very hard. Dave Morrison who was our target man up front and worked hard all through the game laid on a peach of a pass for Brian Spillane who obliged for a goal early in the second half. Both Colm Bary and Colm Spillane were in fine form and kept our backs in position as they dealt well with several Lisgoold pressure. Barry Murphy and James Kearney worked savage hard around the middle for us. With seven minutes to go it was 2-18 to 0-18. However, Lisgoold hurdled mighty for a while and were rewarded with two points. The clock was ticking and John Cashman sent in a rasper of a free, but it was saved. The sliotar broke loose and they had a first time pull on it which skimmed the outside of our post leaving us winners by four points as time was up shortly afterwards. Well done to the team and management. This was a very good team display from our lads, and one could sense the positive outlook with two more league points on the board. The referee was Brian Murphy and while he may have made some interesting decisions he did handle the game well. Thanks to Tadgh Mullane who operated our new Scoreboard sponsored by Brian O’Sullivan of ZEUS and now a lovely feature on our new development. Tadgh now has the scoreboard programmed with our lotto, events, etc and is ready for the bigger games ahead. The next RED FM league game is at home to Russell Rovers on Thursday 5.6.25.

East Cork Junior Hurling League Division Two.
Castlelyons 2-12 Fr O’Neill’s 1-21.
This game was a top of the table clash in Castlelyons last Friday evening. Due to the Red FM game on the previous evening, we were down some players and Fr O’Neill’s started very well putting a goal and five points on the board before we scored. However, some of our minor players responded well with Adam Lardner putting over a few points and Ronan Ryan getting a goal to put us back in the game. Colm McCarthy our goalie was called on a lot landing and a monster of a free. Jack Cremin worked hard in the forwards and young Dylan Leetch hurled a lot of ball at centre field with Noelie McAuliffe making a fierce effort too. Coming towards the end of the first half O’Neill’s got on top again and scored three pints without reply to leave it 1-13 to 1-6 in their favour at half time.
We really improved in the second half as Jack Cremin and Olan Linehan scored points before Jack slipped a great pass to Olan Linehan who planted a mighty goal for us. Our goalie Colm McCarthy was on hand again to send over a long-range point. The score was 2-12 to 1-19 with five minutes to go and an upset on the cards but O’Neill’s finished out the stronger tagging on two more points. Well done to our lads for a great effort. There is one game left in the league versus Carrignabhfear and we are still second so it would be great to have a full panel for that evening.
Panel: Colm McCarthy, Declan Morrison, Liam Moroney, Sean Leneghan; Oisin Morrison, Sane Flynn, Stephen Casey; Dylan Leetch, Noel McAuliffe; Jack Cremin, Jack Kenny, Olan Lenihan; Ian O’Sullivan, Ronan Ryan, Adam Lardner; Stephen Rice, Kevin Barry, Mike Griffen, Alan O’Regan, Darragh Bransfield, Cathal Sheehan

Castlelyons Ladies Football.
Under 13 Girls Qualify for East Cork Shield Final
The Under 13 LGFC girls played Tadgh Mac Carthaigh, who travelled all the way from Caheragh in West Cork, in the county quarter final versus on Bank Holiday Monday in Castlelyons. Castlelyons qualified for this county championship to represent the East Cork Division due to a fantastic league campaign. The girls were in fantastic form and their defence was under great pressure from the West Cork side as the led 1-2 to 0-2 at half time.
Tadgh Mac Carthaigh started very well in the second half as they attacked in numbers but could not score. Our girls done very well in defence and Saoirse Shanahan was safe in goals. Then Isabelle Crowley showing great control and speed as she soloed downfield got in for a great goal. Aalaina Leetch intercepted an attack and got the ball downfield to Emma Potter who was fouled. Bronagh Fitzgerald put over the free to increase our lead. Fiadh McCarthy who was one of number of Castlelyons great defenders turned over a great ball and Bronagh Fitzgerald was on hand to score another goal. This goal sealed it, and it was a memorable hat trick for Bronagh Fitzgerald too in a game where there were all Castlelyons heroes.
Congratulations to the team, and mentors George Leetch the coach, James Delea and Jenna Leetch. They now await the winners of Fermoy and a mid-Cork side in the semi-final. It was interesting to talk to one of the Tadgh Mac Carthaigh a mentor after the game as they travelled for over an hour and a half to Castlelyons but were delighted to do so as the day was fine and were most thankful for the pizzas and refreshments provided by Castlelyons. Donie Daly the referee travelled from from Youghal. Overall, while one could sense the size of the county, is it any wonder that ladies football is one of the fastest growing sports in Europe when there is such effort and enthusiasm made with the underage and well done to the Castlelyons club who now have a firm foot in it.
Panel: Cliodhna Bransfield, Isabelle Crowley, Brenna Fallon, Bronagh Fitzgerald, Aaliana Leetch, Zelata Ferents, Fiadh McCarthy, Leagh O’Loughlin, Lauren O’Driscoll, Emma Potter, Anna Quirke, Molly Ronayne Maher, Abbie Rumley, Erin Rumley, Saoirse Shanahan.
Munster Senior Hurling Final on Saturday evening.
Cork play Limerick in the Munster final this Saturday evening the 7th of June with a 6pm throw in at the Gaelic Grounds. It should be a full house as is usual for all Munster games so far this year and even though the price of tickets have increased it does not seem to worry the patrons. So far, the games in Munster have lacked that great excitement we experienced last year so a good final would be appreciated by all. There were numerous theories about Cork’s poor display against Limerick last time out as a sixteen-point defeat was so heavy. Now this is an opportunity to put matters right especially on the scoreboard and maybe take the Mackey Cup back to the Banks. There are injuries as it seems that Niall O’Leary, Declan Dalton and Ger Millerick are not available due to injury. However, Cork have a huge panel of class hurlers, and this is the time for lads to answer the cause. Best of luck to the team and management.
Cork footballers suffered defeat once more and this time by old rivals Kerry who ran out convincing winners in the end 1-28 to 0-20. However, Cork had some massive possession during the game but missed so many goal scoring opportunities – three in the first half – and had a late penalty saved. Beaten three times already in the championship it is now last chance saloon as they play Roscommon in two weeks’ time on neutral ground. It is interesting that players have such a long training season and then a hectic few weeks of games and it seems to take its toll on players. Kerry now have Paudie Clifford Paul Geaney Barry Dan O’Sullivan Diarmuid O’Connor all injury concerns and Cork are managing some injured players too.
