Castlemartyr GAA News
Intermediate Hurling
Well done to our hurlers who continued their good recent form with a convincing 4-24 to 1-15 win over Midleton in the RED FM League on Saturday evening.
After playing into the wind in the first half, we looked in a good position when leading by 1-11 to 1-6 at half time. Billy McGann netting after 19 minutes. Further goals, by Billy, Barry Lawton and Mike Kelly, embellished a solid all-around win. Despite conceding a goal just on the stroke of half time, Castlemartyr would have to be very happy with their first thirty minutes.
In an even opening the sides traded scores regularly to leave the scoreboard deadlocked at 0-5 each on 17 minutes, before MIke Kelly edged us ahead. Then the very lively Andrew Kelly did the spadework to set up the strong running Billy McGann for our first goal. A fine stop from goalkeeper Derek Bowens allied to points from Mike, Billy and Andrew, along with a Darragh Joyce monster free had the reds well set up, before Midleton hit for that 30th minute goal. Castlemartyr had shown plenty of composure in that first half, working the ball very well through the lines and looking solid for the most part in defence where Cathal Martin and Darragh
Joyce provided a strong central spine.
Wind doesn't always win matches but it certainly helps. Billy McGann and Ciarán Sice shot early points in the resumption, Darragh Leahy, who enjoyed another impressive hour - made an important block to deny Midleton a second goal, before Barry Lawton crashed home our second major on 38 minutes. All of that established a degree of comfort as we led by 2-13 to 1-8. From there on it was very much one way traffic as we outscored our visitors by 2-10 to 0-7 in the remaining twenty minutes. Job done with a good bit to spare and plenty of well taken scores, with subs Liam Martin and Cian Murphy amongst those raising white flags.
Mike Kelly finished with 1-9, whilst Billy McGann tallied 2-2. Barry Lawton had 1-3 and Andrew Kelly registered 0'4.
It's Kilbriitain next for Castlemarty at Paddy Walsh Memorial Park on Saturday week June 14th 7.30pm. Our final match is away to Mayfield two weeks later.

League Table
Several clubs have promotion aspirations with the league table looking very tight at present - Castlemartyr are currently in third place with two series of games to play, but only 2 points separates the top 6 sides. Dungourney, will in fact conclude their programme this Wednesday against Midleton, where a win would see them finish with 13 points. They moved top after a 0-27 to 2-11 win against Milford this weekend.
Ballyhea and Aghabollogue are also above us with 10 points, with Milford and our next opponents Kilbrittain keeping us company on 9 points.
So what's required to be in the mix for promotion and a place in the Final?
Firstly we need to win both games, which takes us to 13. Secondly, we need one or even better - both Aghabullogue and Ballhea to suffer a defeat, as two wins for both sees them seal promotion. Ballyhea are away to Ballygarvan and at home to Erin's Own. Aghabollogue are home to Ballgarvan and away to Milford in what looks a pivotal fixture.
Thereafter, its a case of scoring difference or head to head coming into play if there is congestion on 13 points.
