Castlelyons Play Lisgoold in Cork Red FM Division 3 Hurling League Thursday 29.5.25.

Castlelyons play Lisgoold on Thursday evening in a vital round of the Red FM hurling league division 3.  We had a well-earned three point win our last evening away versus Blarney.  However, Lisgoold one of the most impressive teams in the county with victories and promotions over the last few years had comprehensive victory over Blarney, Courcey Rovers and Mallow in this league.  This gives them six points already and they are assured of their status for next year and could yet reach the final.  So don’t forget this Thursday evening at 7.30 pm in Castlelyons it should be an interesting game with Brian Murphy on the whistle.

Rebel Óg North Division Two Under 18 Hurling League.

Castlelyons 2-20 Killavullen 1-9.

Our minors recorded a facile victory over Killavullen in this league game played in Castlelyons.  They were on top in all parts of the field although half forward Daithi Murphy and midfielder Niall Feeney, who got a run hurling with Cork in the Celtic Challenge, tried very hard for Killavullen.  All our forwards scored with Adam Lardner, Ronan Ryan, and Shane Hallihan the main sharpshooters as we played with the breeze in the first half.

On the turnaround our full back line held firm with our half backs of Gearóid McCarthy, Dylan Leetch and Oran Hickey doing well although any frees given away were putt over for Killavullen by Daithi Murphy.  Our midfielders of Sean Óg McGuire got on top again and our forwards obliged with taking their chances as Darragh Fleming, Ciarán Murphy and Kevin Barry tacked on scores too. We are now second in this league table.  No doubt there are tough games ahead but well-done lads.

The referee for this game was our own great Timmy McCarthy and while he was easy on the whistle he did a good job.  I was thinking during the game did many of the lads on the field know him or that he starred in four  senior All-Ireland finals with Cork and won three medals.  While they were not born when Cork won the last All Ireland in 2005 and Timmy was a star on that team, Cork supporters and all are hoping for a good 2025 and the good days ahead again.

Team: Jude Hallihan; Cathal Sheehan, John O’Neill, Darragh Bransfield; Gearóid McCarthy, Dylan Leetch, Oran Hickey; Sean Óg McGuire, Tom O’Neill; Ciarán Murphy, Darragh Fleming, Shane Hallihan; Adam Lardner, Ronan Ryan, Kevin Barry. Subs; Ronan Hickey Khaled Abdelrazik

Rebel Óg East Division Two Under 14 Championship

Castlelyons 2-13 Whitechurch 6-14

Our Under 14 hurlers were out in championship action again on Friday night.  This time we were up against a very strong Whitechurch team.  There was good hurling with both defences giving up few chances, Dylan Barrett done well fur us at full back and the scoreline was five points apiece with almost fifteen minutes gone.  Whitechurch put on a lot of pressure then to lead by ten points at halftime.  However, we were unlucky ourselves as we had a few goal chances too.

Our lads came out strong at the start of the second half to reduce the lead to four points with a run of scores from Ned Condon.  Whitechurch were on top for the second half and were comprehensive winners, through some well taken goals and a penalty.  Nevertheless, our lads battled hard to the end, with Robbie and Ryan Wallace staying strong in defence and Ewan Mc Carthy hurling well at midfield. Josh Kinnane in goal made some good saves and was strong and confident under high balls dropping in.  The final round robin game will be played on Friday 6th June against St Catherine’s in Castlelyons and this should be a cracker as Catherines had a good win over Kildorrery in their last outing.

Team: Josh Kinnane; Robbie Wallace, Dylan Barrett, Jack Cronin; John Moloney, Carter Clegg, Ryan Wallace; Alex O Brien, Ned Condon; Jimmy O Riordan, Cionnaith Cotter, Tadgh Hickey; Cathal Henley, Ewan Mc Carthy, Liam Martin; Tom Barry, Malik Abdelrazik.

Castlelyons Juvenile GAA Blitz.

Well done to the Juvenile Club who hosted a very successful Juvenile Blitz in Páirc an tAthair Peadar last Saturday in Hurling, Camogie and Ladies Football.  There were teams from Fermoy, Sarsfields, Rockbán, Bride Rovers, Whitescross, Mallow, Kildorrery, etc all taking part in games at Under, 7, 8, 9 10 and a camogie Under 12 game.  Both pitches were full on Saturday and the Tuc Shop going well too.  Congrats and well done to the organisers and all.

Castlelyons Ladies Football.

Under 10 Blitz

On Saturday morning our U10s played a Go Games blitz with visiting teams from Rockbán and Whitescross. There was mighty football played by all teams and the Castlelyons girls under the guidance of Sarah Coleman and Barry Sheehan have a bright future.

Under 13 Girls Qualify for East Cork Shield Final

Last Friday the Under 13s had their last East Cork LGFA league game with a comfortable win over Youghal. These girls have been unbelievable all year and have gone undefeated in the league, finishing joint top with Kilworth.  But Kilworth, who we drew with earlier in the campaign, pipped them to a place in the league final by scoring difference. However, our girls will now play in the Under 13 East Cork Shield final versus Fermoy.  They also qualify for the county championship due to their fantastic league performance. Best of luck to the girls in the Shield final and the date of this game will be fixed shortly.

Under 15 Girls Draw with Kilworth

The Under 15s were away to Kilworth on Saturday evening in tough conditions. The girls conceded an early goal to Kilworth and against the wind were struggling to get forward. Kilworth tacked on two more points. Sarah O’Connor and Gemma Collins dropped deep to support the midfield, and it paid off with a well worked move finished to the net by Sarah. Sophie Crowley then added two more points before the end of the half, one a beauty with the outside of her left boot, to leave it all square at halftime. Straight from the second half throw a long ball found Bronagh Fitzgerald, just on the pitch, who instinctively turned and scored a great goal. The game ebbed and flowed, both sides exchanging scores, but both defences were on top. As the game entered the last few minutes Emilia Feehan found herself unmarked on the edge of the box and finished coolly beyond the Kilworth keeper to leave us a point up. Kilworth got one last chance and scored a free before Brendan Noonan blew the whistle for a draw.  This was a great performance by both teams in the wind and rain. Thanks to Kilworth for a great game.

Cork senior hurlers advance to Munster Final.

After a bruising defeat the Sunday before in Limerick our county senior hurlers had all the home comforts last Sunday in the Páirc taking on the Déise.  The day was cool with a bit of a breeze.  The place packed with over 42,000 and surely a ratio of 95 to 5 up for the Rebels.  Cork were wary of the Déise especially after last years defeat in Waterford.  Cork had the opportunity in their own lawn to out lessons learned from the below par performance against Limerick and they won by six points after enduring a few anxious moments towards the end.  Well done on the win and especially to Brian Roche of Bride Rovers who has a good game, Diarmuid Healy of neighbouring Lisgoold also and Eoin Roche of the Rovers. While the free scoring scene expected was not there, they now have two weeks to prepare for the Munster Final and another battle with Limerick.

Cork took Kerry to extra time in the Munster championship before defeat and there were high expectations of progress in the all-Ireland championship.  They travelled to Páirc Tailteann Navan on Saturday to play Meath. They were defeated 1-13 to 0-12 with many of the old problems surfacing again.  They failed to dominate the midfield and showed a lack of scoring forwards despite great work by Chris Óg Jones.   They now face Kerry in the group again next Saturday in the Páirc and a win is vital as is your support for the footballers too.

Rebel Óg East Under 12 Hurling League.

Castlelyons 2-13 Mayfield 1-1.

The evening was breezy and cool for this league game as our under 12 hurlers elected to take advantage of the elements in the first half.  We used this well and got on top early with a brace of goals from Cian O’Donovan who had an outstanding game all through.  Indeed, we had a lot of star performers in Rian Fitzgerald, Robbie Wallace, Tom Barry, Boddy Hosford, Robbie Milward and Liam Martin to mention a few as we led 2-5 to a goal at half time.

We continued to dominate in the second half against the breeze with three well taken points from Cian O’Donovan.  Tom Barry a versatile player went into goals for the second half and has some great saves with a strong puckout.  Overall, a good display and I like the way the selectors Declan Wallace interchanged and gave all the panel plenty of gametime.  Well done lads.

Panel: Robbie Milward, Bobby Hosford, Liam Cashman, Luke Dolan, Jack Cronin, Tom Barry, Robbie Wallace, Fionn O’Neill, Rian Fitzgerald, Liam Martin, Callaghan McCarthy, Cian O’Donovan, Diarmuid O hUallacháin, Mason White, Charlie White, Darragh McCarthy.

Best Wishes.

Best wishes to Leo Sexton who has recently transferred to Clontarf GAA Club, Dublin.  Leo has played with Castlelyons in all grades from juvenile to senior. His commitment to the cause was unbelievable when one considers he has lived in Dublin since his college days, and now 36 the long journeys down the M8 have been a feature for most of his life for training and games.   He was always the mainstay of our team, rarely missing a game and giving so many sterling performances.  He may be in the twilight of a great hurling career, but he has still a lot to offer, and we wish Leo, his wife and family the very best into the future.
