Castlemartyr Notes (20th May)

RED FM Div 5 League
A really exciting local derby in the Division 5 hurling league versus Dungourney took place on Saturday evening - with hosts Castlemartyr running out one point winners on a 3-20 to 2-22 scoreline, in a game where both sides were missing some regulars.
Both teams played well during an eventful hour, which saw Castlemartyr lead by 3-11 ro 2-10 at the interval. Dungourney had struck with an early goal and with Jack Leahy looking dangerous throughout,. they always carried a major threat. However, the reds really settled to the task early on, playing some fine hurling in that first half and were rewarded on the scoreboard with Andrew Kelly's well taken goal mid way through and a fine brace of green flags late on from the hard working Billy McGann, who finished with a superb 2-3 from play. It left them four ahead at half time but having to play against the breeze into the road goal after the interval.
No more goals were added in that second half as both teams battled for the league points, in a league game that at times had a whiff of championship about it. Cork Under 20 player Killian O'Callaghan enjoyed some fine moments for Dungourney, but overall the Castlemartyr rearguard held tight. Darragh Leahy, Cathal Martin and Barra O'Tuama were impressive in defence and Cian Murphy and Andrew Kelly were proving a handful in attack. The hosts, who had also had Ciaran Sice and Liam Martin continuously working tirelessly at midfield, held on for a win by the minimum.
So to a snapshot of the game. Castlemartyr recovered well from the concession of an early goal as Billy McGann, Andrew Kelly, Liam Martin and Mike Kelly (3) all raised white flags to push us 0-6 to 1-1 ahead inside eight minutes after a very lively opening. A second Dungourney goal, following a lapse of defensive concentration, allied to Andrew Kelly's green flag on 15 minutes meant the visitors went ahead by 2-8 to 1-9 by minute 20. However, the Castlemartyr response was laudable with plenty of energy all over the pitch, the reds charged back in front with those two aforementioned excellent quickfire goals from Billy McGann inside ninety seconds as half time approached. Cian Murphy rounded off the scoreboard activity with a fine point just into stoppage time.
Cian, along with Andrew and Mike Kelly kept the hosts ahead 3-15 to 2-15 as we headed into the last quarter . Despite struggling for a while to win breaks and puck outs, Castlemartyr stuck rigidly to their task and they managed to keep their noses in front in the face of a strong Dungounrey rally for the levelling scores, with a Ciaran Sice's 58th minute score being crucial to the outcome.

League Table
So, on a fairly congested looking league table, several clubs including both ourselves and Dungourney are still potentially in the mix for final places with three rounds of games to go. Aghabullogue are leading with 10 points, whilst Ballyhea sit on 8 - with Castlemartyr, Milford, Dungourney and Kilbrittain all on 7 points. Ballyhea and Milford both have a game on hand and they play that catch up fixture this evening, whilst Kilbrittain meet Dungourney on Saturday. So before our next match - away to Midleton - on Saturday week, we should have a better idea of the state of play, as Ballyhea host Aghabullogue on the previous evening.
Junior Hurling
Our Junior hurlers concluded thier JHL1 campaign last evening with a 4-25 to 3-10 loss away to Bride Rovers. Well taken goals by Liam Martin, Sean Morgan and Darragh Cashman plus points from Declan Kelly, Darragh Leahy and Conor Ronayne were amongst the positives from a difficult hour in which the reds showed a good attitude despite facing an uphill battle from early on.
Annual Golf Classic
How time flies by - here we are already talking golf again. Last year's memorable Centenary Golf Classic proved a great success and was a major part of our fundraising activity for the year.
Now twelve months on, we are hoping to replicate last year's figures and hopefully exceed them. The development of our facilities has been to the fore over the past number of years and quite simply there is no let up. Planning permission is currently awaited for 2 new projects ... our proposed new meeting/function room area which will also contain a kitchen and will be a huge boost to our facilities.
Likewise the addition of a new gym will be seen as a major step forward. These new developments will cater for the needs of so many people of all ages and will be a huge investment in the future of our club. But to bring both to reality - we need the help of all our members, supporters, friends and contacts in hurling, football, camogie and ladies football.
So once again we are making a special appeal to each and every of you to get behind this year's golf classic. You can help by participating, sourcing teams and tee boxes and contacting everyone you know to help our cause. There is no reason why our Golf Classic cannot continue its rapidly rising trajectory and be the biggest and best.
