Minors fall agonisingly short
Glenville 3-14 - Mitchelstown 3-16
Our minors were out last Wednesday night with a home game vs. Mitchelstown. It was a glorious Wednesday evening in the sunshine in Glenville and the two teams served up a free-flowing game of football, played in a great spirit. Mitchelstown opened the scoring with two points before Jayden scored our first at the end of a flowing team move. Another Mitchelstown point was followed by a flurry from Glennville, with David and Shayne pointing and David finding the net to push us into a 1-3 to 1-2 lead. We struggled to deal with Mitchelstown attacking flair however, and they scored 1-2 before Louie put over another point, showing quick reflexes to first time the ball over the bar. Rio and Mike scored our final two points of the half to match two from Mitchelstown, leading us to a half time deficit of 2 goals, 1-6 to 3-6. In truth, it was a fair reflection of the first half as Mitchelstown were sharper throughout. It also probably reflected a little rustiness in the team as it was 6 weeks since our last game, the fixture calendar not helping us. The boys knew they had to be better for the second half and by the 45-minute mark they had hauled themselves level, with two points from Jayden, another goal from David, and two 2 pointers from frees for Shayne cancelling out a point and a two pointer from Mitchelstown. Mitchelstown steadied however and scored four without reply and in Glenville’s efforts to force the game in the last minutes we made a few mistakes that led to turnovers and couldn’t bring ourselves back again. Further points from Jayden and David and a last gasp penalty from Shayne weren’t quite enough and we finished on the wrong side of a 3-14 to 3-16 defeat. While the lads were disappointed, they played some terrific football at times and have plenty to work from for their next game, away to Clyda Rovers on Wednesday night. Team and scorers: C.Sheehan; D.O’Connor, S.O’Leary, C.Buckley; C.McHugh, B.Ryan, Z.Curtin; E.Forde, D.Barry (2-1); A.Hennessy, J.Hennebry (0-5), M.O’Riordan (0-1); L.Guichard (0-1), S.Curtin (1-5)’s, E.Hartnett; J.Long, R.Horgan (0-1).
