Castlelyons GAA Notes week ended 5.5.25.

Castlelyons defeated by Ballinhassig at home in Red FM League.

Cork Red FM Division 3 Hurling League

Castlelyons 2-8 Ballinhassig 1-18

This was Ballinhassig’s second visit to play on our new pitch as they already played Kilworth in the championship last year and on Sunday last they faced us in the Red FM Hurling League Division 3.  The weather was fantastic, and we had the advantage of a relatively strong breeze as we played towards Ballyarra in the first half.

Ballinhassig who travelled strong with a near full team started well putting three points on the board before we scored through Brian O’Donovan six minutes into the game.  Then a free from Brian was deflected to the net by our full forward Shane Moroney and we scored another point.  The Ballinhassig goalie made two good saves one from Leon Doocey and the other from David Morrison.  Colm and Jack Barry did land shots over the bar from outfield while we were on top.   Ballinhassig kept battling and came into the game with some good points and then Sean Lombard got through for a goal to put them in control.  Nevertheless, our backs defended very well and cleared a pile of ball with Matthew Rosner, Darragh and Colm Spillane doing very well while Colm Barry playing his first game of the season due to injury was very good too. Peter Roche had a cracking shot for goal save by the Ballinhassig goalie and then a swing in play up field with speed as Brien Lynch pointed for them to leave the half time score 1-10 to 1-5 in favour of Ballinhassig.  We could easily have been well ahead in this half, but our shooting efficiency was very low.

Ballinhassig started the second half well again and made good use of the breeze as they were most proficient in point scoring.   Leon Doocey back for his first game of the season had done very well during his gametime but did not play out the full game. Our half forward Brian O’Donovan received a nasty shoulder injury had had to depart the scene as well. At this stage Darragh O’Sullivan, a member of Cork’s extended panel was exerting a lot of power hurling around the half back line after Leon Doocey came off.

We played out the game very well as Dave Morrison’s efforts were rewarded with a good goal 18 minutes into the second half. Colm McCarthy on as a sub pointed a free while James Kearney and Peter Roche.  We were going well on the run in and Colm McCarthy shot for goal, but their goalie made another great save, and Peter Roche was on hand again to close out our scoring with a point leaving the full-time score 2-8 to 1-18.  Overall, we are improving as more of the lads are coming back but we need to get into winning mode and create a bit of a home fortress, or we could drop a division in the league.  Our next game is away to Blarney.  The referee Anthony O’Regan from Youghal let the game flow and did a good job.

Team: Jack Barry; Robbie Feeney, Darragh Spillane, Matthew Rosner; Shane Flynn, Colm Spillane, Colm Barry; Jack Kearney, Peter Roche; Ronan Fenton, Leon Doocey, Brian O’Donovan; Shane Cotter, S Moroney, Dave Morrison. Subs: Darren Tobin, Colm McCarthy, B Carroll, Stephen Casey, Cees Kouwenburg.

East Cork Junior Hurling League Division Two.

Youghal 2-15 Castlelyons 1-26.

This game was played in Club Áras, Youghal on Thursday evening last in sweltering summer weather.  Youghal started well but our backs held them, and Eoin Barry made one great save.  We did manage scores from Brian O Donovan, Ronan Fenton and Darren Tobin.  They got through for a goal on 15 minutes to leave the score 0-6 to 1-4.  Youghal kept up the pressure, but Eoin Barry made another great save and Olan Linehan, O’Donovan and Tobin were on target for us to leave the half time score 1-8 to 0-10 in favour of Youghal.

We played way better in the second half with some great scores particularly from Shane Cotter, Olan Linehan, Ronan Fenton, Brian Carroll and Darren Tobin to go 0-25 to 2-14 in the closing stages.  Then Olan Linehan goaled for us and Shane Cotter tapped a penalty over the bar as we ran out convincing winners 1-26 to 2-15. We now head this League on eight points with four wins from four so well done all.

Team: Eoin Barry; Stephen Casey, Liam Moroney, Matthew Rosner; William McAuliffe, Stephen Griffey, Shane Moroney; Brian Carroll, Darren Tobin; Jack Kenny, Brian O’Donovan, Peter Roche; Olan Linehan, Shane Cotter, Jack Cremin.  Subs K Barry, O Morrison, S Rice, S Flynn, I O’Sullivan, T O’Neill, M Griffin, D Morrison, C Kouwenburg, R Fenton, S Linehan, D Leetch.

Castlelyons 2-10 Carrigtwohill 3-9.

This was a great game of football with effort, some hard hitting and good scores.  We three points on the board early and then Carrig blasted a goal. We tacked on a few points when Carrig got another goal, and it was 0-5 to 2-3 in favour of Carrig with 15 mins gone.  Our lads continued to play well but found it had to score then one of them seem to be tripped on the ball, but play was left go on and it resulted in another goal for Carrig. Leaving it 3-6 to 0-6 at half time.  During that half we had great defensive work by the O’Neill brothers, Cathal Sheehan and Sean Óg McGuire and some nice points from the Hallahan’s and Khaled Abdelrazik.

We started the second well and Seanie O’Callaghan pointed.  Then Shane Hallihan was fouled for a penalty and Sean Óg McGuire clung it and suddenly we were back in the game.  Shane Hallihan got a goal of his own and O’Callaghan pointed after an assist by Khalid … Our backs and midfield were doing well and created a strong push up field as Dyland Leetch and Darragh Fleming both pointed.  Then gradually Carrig got back on top with a few scores of their own.  We had one last chance as some great link up play by Shane Hussey broke down and the game ended 2-10 to 3-9 in favour of Castlelyons.  Well done lads for a great effort in football.  We are mid table in this league and still in with an opportunity to make the final.

Panel: Kevin Barry; Cathal Tobin, Tom O’Neill, Darragh Bransfield; John O’Neill, Sean Óg McGuire; Oran Hickey; Dylan Leetch, Ronan Ryan; Shane Hallihan, Shane Hussey, Shane Hallihan, Jude Hallihan, Seanie O Callaghan, Khaled Abdelrazik; Eanna Cotter Liam O’Riordan.

Féile na nGeal Under 15 Hurling.

We entered an Under 15 hurling team took part in the Féile na nGeal hurling competition playing three games on Monday versus Banteer/Lyre, Na Piarsiagh and St Vincent’s.  All games were closely contested with only a single score between the teams in all games. Castlelyons beat Banteer/Lyre by a single point and lost by a single point to both Na Piarsiagh and St Vincent’s. Very strong effort from all the lads as we fielded a very young team with only two players on the age. This was a great experience for the young panel. On another day we could have walked away with three wins.  Ewan Mc Carthy and Malik Abdelrazik performed strongly for us and Christopher O Sullivan playing for the first time at this age played well.

Team; Josh Kinnane; Ryan Wallace, Tadgh Hickey, Cathal O Keeffe, Rory Lardner, Malik Abdelrazik, Ned Condon, Alex O Brien, Ewan Mc Carthy, Cionnath Cotter, Jimmy O Riordan, Dylan Barrett, Christoper O Sullivan, Cathal Henley.

Castlelyons 4-8 Delanys 1-3.

We travelled away for this game on Sunday morning and started well, getting on top early with goals from Tom Barry, Cian O’Donovan and Rian Fitzgerald.  Then Delanys got their period of dominance, but it didn't show on the scoreboard. They kicked a few wides and hit the post and some great last gasp tackles from Liam Cashman and Fionn O’Neill kept us in front at halftime. Darragh McCarthy got a super goal, lobbing the ball over the onrushing goalie.  We had a couple of well worked team pints from Rian, Cian, Tom and Darragh saw us win on a scoreline of 4-8 to 1-3. The boys are improving every week and it's great to see them passing the ball around and enjoying their football. Next weekend Castlelyons U12s are back to hurling and away to Lisgoold, which should be another good game.

Panel: - Robbie Milward, Bobby Hosford, Liam Cashman, Luke Dolan, Jack Cronin, Tom Barry, Robbie Wallace, Fionn O’Neill, Rian Fitzgerald, Liam Martin, Callaghan McCarthy, Cian O’Donovan, Diarmuid O hUallacháin, Mason White, Charlie White, Darragh McCarthy.

Camogie Under 16 All Ireland Final.

This game was played in Nowlan Park, Kilkenny on Saturday last with Cork facing up to Galway. Emer Hallihan of Castlelyons was playing.  However, it was not Cork’s day as Galway put in a big performance to win 5-11 to 3-8.  Hard luck this time Cork and Emer but no doubt better days ahead.
