Castlelyons GAA Notes week ended 28.4.25.
Good win for Castlelyons minor hurlers over Kilworth.
Rebel Óg North Under 18 Hurling League.
Castlelyons 4-18 Kilworth Araglen Óg 1-17.
This game was played in ideal conditions in our new field on Wednesday evening with Stephen Hackett on the whistle. We started well and put up a score of 1-3 before Kilworth had their first score. Our goal came a little fortuitously as Shane Hallihan sent in a long ball the flight was misjudged in the goalmouth. Kilworth did put on a lot of pressure but did not reap the rewards as our backs done well. Our midfield got on top for a while and our forwards made use of the ball going in. The Kilworth goalie Sean Murphy was busy and made some good saves. Adam Lardner, Ronan Ryan and Darragh Fleming all rose the green flag with Sean O’Callaghan, Darragh Fleming, Kevin Barry and Adam Lardner all posting white flags to leave the score 4-12 to 1-5 in our favour at half time.
In the second half Kilworth made a right game of it as they scored five points in a short time until Adam Lardner settles us again with a long range free. There was some great hurling in this half as Kilworth pressed up on our lads but our full back line of the two O’Neills Tom and John with Darragh Fleming defended mighty and Jude Hallahan was sure in goals. The Kilworth lads led by Denis Riordan, Killian Watts and Adam Duggan were rampant for a while but our half back line of Gearóid McCarthy, Dylan Leetch and Eanna Cotter got to grips again with the pressure as did our midfielders. However, we finished well Adam Lardner put over some good points scoring a total of 1-13. All our subs got gametime making good contributions too. We are going well in this league and second to Kilworth now so keep it going lads.

Castlelyons 0-19 Courcey Rovers 2-21.
This was a long journey in driving rain to the country of the moving statue down in Ballinspittle and there was no clearance throughout the game. However, the conditions did not affect the hurling of either side as the standard and effort was most commendable. Olan Linehan set the tone for us with a very well taken point and another by Eoin Maye. There were periods of great defending by our backs in the first half especially Darragh Spillane, Mark Rosner and Stephen Griffey. Robbie Feeney had to go off injured, but Stephen Casey came in and done very well as he had a serious injury last year. Dave Morrison, Ronan Fenton had points and Brian O’Donovan buzzed about sending over four points between frees and play in the first half. There was an unfortunate mix up resulting in a goal for Courceys, but Colm Spillane scored a great point afterwards to leave the half time score 0-10 to 1-12 in favour of Courceys at half time.
We started the second half very well but could not score although Brian O’Donovan was fouled and pointed for us. Courceys got on top for a while and put a few points on the board, but our lads made a savage effort again with Jack Kearney and Eoin Maye and Barry Murphy going well. D Morrison, B Murphy and B O’Donovan scored points for us. Courceys did get in for another goal. Colm Spillane and Jack Kearney who both done well came off as they are gradually making it back after injury. Jack Cremin, Kas Kouwenberg Darren Tobin and Oisin Morrison all came on as subs. Our lads reorganised and put in a fantastic last ten minutes with Barry Murphy, Brian O’Donovan and Jack Barry all adding scores. Overall, the two handy goals aside the lads played very well against a stronger outfit. We are improving in our hurling and with more of the injured list on the way back the results should start rolling in again.
Team: Jack Barry; Robbie Feeney, Darragh Spillane, Mark Rosner; Peter Roche, Colm Spillane, Stephen Griffey; Jack Kearney, Eoin Maye; Brian O’Donovan, Barry Murphy, Ronan Fenton; Olan Linehan, Dave Morrison, Brian Spillane. Subs Darren Tobin, Kas Kouwenberg, Olan Morrison, Stephen Casey, Jack Kenny, Jack Cremin, Michael Griffin.

Castlelyons 3-9 Grange 1-11.
Castlelyons back after some time out of championship football and not taking part in any league had an excellent win over Grange in Páirc an tAthair Peadar on Saturday evening. It did take us a while to get into the game and, of course, the new rules. The more experienced Grange outfit had four points on the board before Jack Cremin kicked a two pointer. Our backs began to clear a lot of ball, and we were on top but could not score for a while. Then Jack Cremin to another point and Adam Lardner set up Kas Kouwenberg who went for goal, but it was well saved. However, Kas managed a point from the rebound to leave it 0-4 to 0-4 at half time.
Cathal Sheehan and Ronan Ryan, both minors, came on at half time. Grange were first to score a point but Barry Murphy who had a great game all through got in the ball to Ronan Ryan and he laid off to Richard Morrison for a great goal. Shane Cotter pointed, and Olan Linehan scored another goal for us to put us up 2-5 to 0-5. Grange made a game of it for a while with Darren Roche and Gavin Dawson scoring a one and a two pointer. But Richard Morrison, Dylan Leetch and Jack Cremin scored a point apiece for us. Despite having several minor and young players we showed great fitness and moved the ball very well as Richard Morrison finished off a great move for another goal. Grange did manage 1-1 at the end but we ran out winners 3-9 to 1-11. Well done to the team and management. Our next outing is against Abbey Rovers in Ballyhooley on Saturday 10th May at 7pm.
Team: - Shane Hickey; Oisín Morrison, Eoin McLoughlin, Conor McCarthy; Mark Rosner, Stephen Griffey, Olan Linehan; Dylan Leetch, Peter Roche; Kas Kouwenberg, Barry Murphy, Shane Cotter; Jack Cremin, Richard Morrison, Adam Lardner. Subs: - Ronan Ryan, Jack Kenny, Sean Leneghan, Cathal Sheehan, Kevin Barry, Darren Tobin.
Rebel Óg East Under 12 Hurling League
Castlelyons 6-6 Whitechurch 2-2
Our Under 12s hosted Whitechurch in Castlelyons on Saturday last and had a good victory, the game started off quite even and after a couple of minutes a long ball to the edge of the square was finished to the net by Diarmuid O’hUallacháin. Whitechurch replied straight away with a goal of their own. However, Castlelyons then took over with sum great scores from Liam, Rian & Cian to give us a 4-4 to 1-1 half time lead. The second half was a much tighter affair with Whitechurch coming more into the game but some great defending from Bobby Hosford & Eoghan McCarthy helped to keep Whitechurch at bay. Our forwards kept the score board ticking over saw us come out on top 6-6 to 2-2. Well done boys keep it up.

Presentation from Inver Community Engagement Programme and Dave Ryan, Fermoy.
Inver have a Leading Lights programme that provides each of its forecourt partners with €1,000 annually to support a local initiative. This recognises organisations and volunteers making a positive impact in their communities. Castlelyons GAA were selected this year for their voluntary work and community engagement programme through Inver’s forecourt partner in Fermoy Mr David Ryan. Castlelyons have undergone a major development in recent times with a second playing pitch, carpark, a one kilometre fully lit walkway and a stand constructed at the new pitch plus dugouts. The walkway is in constant use from early morning into the late evenings by young and old in the community. The Club is now planning for a fully lit fenced 40’ by 80’ synthetic pitch and toilets. The overall development is a major undertaking, and a lot of the work is done by volunteers and people who have lending their time through management of the project, working through grants and building work hence the recognition by Inver. We are most grateful to Mr David Ryan for not just facilitating the Inver Leading Lights recognition but for his own personal contribution to our Club on Monday. Thanks again Dave.
The Rebels and the Déise flying the colours in the latest episode of the Munster hurling.
Hurling was once described as a form of martial training and proficiency on the field due to the savagery of the game. In fact, it was outlawed in the 12th century for a while. The game really evolved with a set of formal rules introduced after 1884. What a spectacle we have these times as the powerful physique and speed of modern hurlers allows them to move fast into space and use possession to perfection. Nevertheless, the old tribal tendency of fierce rivalry remains and in front of 42.000 last Sunday in SuperValu Páirc Uí Chaoimh when the Rebels and the men from the Premier County shaped up all hell broke loose before the start, and it took a red card by the referee to a Tipperary player to settle the game down. It was Corks turn to show their supporters that they are still live contenders for this year’s Munster and All Ireland titles. Playing against just fourteen and using the space and possession to perfection with some outstanding hurling they swept Tipperary aside by 4-27 to 0-24. Congratulations to our man Niall O’Leary once more so consistent in the Cork full back line and to Brian Roche from Bride Rover who got some game time again.
Earlier in the day down in Walsh Park, Waterford the Déise took on the Banner before a full house of 12,700. They were really on their game and brushed aside a tired Clare who were down a few players on a score 2-23 to 0-21. Special congratulations here to Mr Stephen Bennet, our new principal in Kilmagner national school, who scored 2-8 for Waterford. No doubt Niall O’Leary and Stephen Bennet will cross paths when the Déise come to the Páirc on Sunday 25th May for the final round of the Munster championship.
