Glenville Notes (17th Sep)
Premier Junior match abandoned
Glenville’s third round Premier Junior Championship match against Kinsale on Friday evening in Pairc Ui Rinn had to be abandoned following an injury to a Glenville player in the 32nd minute that resulted in medical intervention and the removal of the player by ambulance to hospital, from which he was subsequently given the all clear and allowed return home.
The first half saw a dominant Glenville side with Colin O’Keeffe scoring a point from a free in the first minute. Kinsale responded with a point in the third minute before Colin O’Keeffe struck again, this time with a spectacular goal. Josh Cooke kicked a 40m point from play, before Kinsale got their second point. Glenville hit a purple patch with Josh Cooke kicking a 45, followed by two Ciaran O’Leary point, a further Josh Cooke point and a Davin Sullivan, giving Glenville five points in a row without reply. Kinsale got their third point on the 25th minute before the in-form Josh Cooke scored another long-range point on the 28th minute to see Glenville go into the break with an 8-point advantage of 1-8 to 0-3.
The second half started with a push by Kinsale and a defensive error gave Kinsale a goal, reducing the winning margin to five points. It was then the Glenville player got injured, which immediately caused the game to be paused. Kinsale had two medical doctors as part of their support squad on their sideline, Dr McGillicuddy and Dr Liam Healy and they immediately came to the assistance of the Glenville player. A long wait for an ambulance led to uncertainty about when the game could be restated and after an hour with no certainty as to how long more the players would be waiting to restart, the referee abandoned the game.
The game will be replayed in Ballygarvan on this Saturday, Sept 21 at 5.45 pm. Any tickets purchased for the abandoned game will remain valid for the refixture.
Glenville GAA wish to acknowledge the exceptional professional medical care provided by Drs McGullicuddy and Healy as well as the support provided by Kinsale management. We are delighted that our player received the all-clear and returned home to his family.
Exciting draw by Junior Bs
Glenville 1-08
Cobh 1-08
Glenville travelled to Erin’s Own home ground in Caherlag on Sunday and played Cobh, coming away with a well-deserved draw. Glenville’s squad was small on the day, a total of 17, with only four players under 22 years of age, so the 13 very experienced players were key to the gameplan.
Cobh started with great intensity and the first six minutes was end to end, with both sides trying to hard score to get hold of the game, with Ger Cahill having the best of the Glenville chances, shooting three well struck shots. Cobh got the first point of the game after six minutes. Glenville fought back, resulting in a point from play from Ciaran Linehan in the ninth minute. Cobh reacted strongly and clocked up four points from play in the following eight minutes without reply. Glenville were boxed in behind their own 45m line, and defended valiantly, with impressive performances from Liam Keane, Paud O’Neill, Tom Gambon in the full-back line backed up by the impressive trio of Fionn Fitzgerald, Johnny Dorgan and Will Sheehy moving back from half back to nearer the goal to rebuff the Cobh attacks and give more defending firepower. A Glenville injury resulted in the introduction of Derek O’Reilly, who made an immediate impact with a powerful full-back performance and added greatly to the Glenville cause. Stephen Ryan was a busy and effective man between the posts and played a significant part in the Glenville game plan with an excellent save and delivered 12 well struck kick-outs, delivered to Glenville midfield and half-forwards. The back six stopped Cobh from increasing their lead of four points for the remainder of the first half, while Donnacha Forde and Ciaran Linehan in midfield played a significant part in winning the kick outs and passing the ball forward to the quick inform Kieran Coakley, the skilful Cork Masters player Brian Cosgrove and the hard working Conor Gowen who played great linked play with the full forward line of John O’Connor, the powerful Michael Murphy and Ger Cahill, all who made great runs and were unlucky not to add to the Glenville scores. Glenville did manage to get their second score when Ciaran Linehan converted his first free of the day on the 28th minute, to see Glenville enter the half-time break trailing by three points 0-5 to 0-2.
A reshuffle of the squad at half time saw Ger Cahill move to sweeper and Johnny Dorgan to the forwards. Glenville started the second half with greater vigour and Conor Gowen scored a brilliant point within 40 seconds of the restart. Glenville pushed on the resultant kick-out winning the ball and Donnacha Forde kicked a great long range to reduce the margin to a one-point deficit. Glenville kept applying the pressure and in the 32nd minute kicked a long ball into the packed Cobh small square. Almost all of the players on both teams assumed the incoming ball was heading out over the endline, but the eagle-eyed John O’Connor used all his experience to grab a high ball and in a series of quick twists, slotted the ball into the back of the Cobh goal to the great delight of his teammates. This proved to be the turning point in the game, putting Glenville ahead for the first time in the game by two points and gave Glenville the belief that the game was there to be won. Ciaran Linehan scored his second free on the 34th minute extending the Glenville lead to three points before Cobh scored a point from a 45 bringing it back to a two-point game. Glenville playing with greater unity and better passing, again moved the ball up the field and the fast and talented Johnny Dorgan kicked a very impressive point for Glenville. Cobh responded with two points bringing it back to a one-point advantage for Glenville. Cobh brought on a new three-man full forward line to attack the Glenville defence, while Paddy O’Sullivan was introduced for Glenville and had a significant impact on the game. On the 49th minute Ciaran Linehan kicked another well struck free to keep Glenville two points ahead. The new Cobh full forward line used their energy to attack a tiring Glenville defence and got a goal on the 55th minute. With five minutes remaining, Glenville were one point behind despite having played the better football in the second half. Glenville kept pressing and won a free on the 58th minute, which Ciaran Linehan put over the bar to level the game. Cobh pushed on to get the win and Stephen Ryan pulled off an exceptional save under severe pressure. Glenville tried hard to get the winning score, but time ran out and the game ended on a draw with both Glenville and Cobh scoring 1-08 each.

U13s win Plate Final
This morning our under 13 team 1 hosted Eire Og in our team 1 plate final .The lads were following up on a great hurling performance yesterday evening and though battle hardened the recent game showed in our lads' early doors with Eire Og doing most of the running. Our co-captains on the day Luke and James led the lads well in the face of early adversity and with Sean Dunlea growing into the sweeper role and able defending from Max, Austen, Ronan, Joe, and Alex we kept our selves in the game until half time. Strong midfield performances from Sean and Danny started to get us on top in the final quarter. Some nice passing play from Sam, Donagh, Cormac Ely Ciaran and James and Jack started to get the scoreboard ticking and then the moment we were waiting all game for, our lads found fifth gear and turned on the style with Danny providing the cream on top with a glorious 2 2 to secure hard earned and delightful victory for our lads
