Club action from the Playing Fields

Round 9 Division 4 Red FM County Hurling League

Youghal 3-07 St Catherines 1-21

St Catherines were winding up their campaign with a well-earned success from this round 9 division 9 county hurling league tie played at an overcast, eventually wet Magners Hill on Friday evening last.

Off to a flyer with Eoin Condon again pouncing for the goal inside thirty seconds. Eoghan O’Riordan, James Hayes and Oisín Fitzgerald were touch tight at the back guaranteeing supply and the scores duly followed. Mathew Mulcahy, Sean O’Donoghue and Kyle Wallace among those to figure. Brian Mulcahy recorded the final three scores of the half, bringing his overall tally to five points. St Catherines ahead on a half time scoreline standing at 1-14 to 0-04.

A Bill Cooper goal early on the resumption would help rally the opposition. Oisín Hill, whose late goal sealed a late home victory in last year’s fixtures, added two more in the fourth and final quarter here. But Rory Galvin kept tipping over the points, be it frees or open play. When called upon, Eoin Davis very reliable from placed balls. Especially those from distance and the visitors had victory sealed long before the end. A couple more fixtures were scheduled for the remainder of the weekend. Whatever they will throw up. But for now the Saints finish on ten points from nine matches played. We’ll take that.

Bride Rovers 1-14 St Catherines 0-13

An opportunely taken Cameron O’Sullivan goal in the opening seconds saw Bride Rovers into a lead held all the way to the line when this Minor hurling league tie went ahead in coolish conditions at overcast Rathcormac on Wednesday evening, June 26th last. Key score of the hour as strong and forceful Diarmuid O’Donovan play, a brace of Ciaran Leamy points allied to the accuracy of Diarmuid O’Connell off placed balls still meant an interval deficit. Bride Rovers to the good on a 1-09 to 0-09 half time scoreline. Back to back end of third quarter points in turn finished off by Gearoid O’Callaghan McCarthy and Gearoid Sheehan, failing to penetrate inside that opening gap on a 1-13 to 0-13 scoreline to 56 minutes. Midleton 3-13 St Catherines 4-12

A first win since opening day with a hard earned success in a league tie played in humid, overcast conditions at Clonmult Park on the evening of Monday, June 24th last. In a match where both teams enjoyed periods of dominance and taking the lead in turn with Kyle O’Donoghue burrowing his way through for the opening goal and a score of 1-01 to 0-03 after just four minutes of a free ridden contest. Harry Waterman and Padraig O’Dowd were very good for the home base team. But back to back Alan Cotter goals, second from a placed ball, were enough to maintain now brief dominance on a half time scoreline standing at 3-06 to 1-10.

Midleton edged it through the third quarter before Ronan Hickey with the vital touch, had the Saints back in front now on a 4-10 to 2-13 scoreline to 53 minutes. Aforementioned Cotter, unerring both from frees and general play, maintaining the advantage to the end allowing for the impressive play of defender Bradley O’Brien. Fixtures against Bride Rovers and Aghada are imminent.

An early start for this championship tie at a humid, overcast Fermoy on Saturday morning last. Immediately drawn to two points of reference. Paired in direct opposition were Noah Keane and Leon Hogan, whose dads Alan and Colin shone for a Saints fourteen team. Now all of 27 years ago. Also both sets of midfielders Cathal Higgins and Kenneth O’Connell for the Saints up against Michael Hennessy and Ciaran McGann shared the opening quartet of scores between them. With the Saints gradually assuming control and 7 unanswered scores followed including 3 Eoin Dillon points without reply. Setting up a 0-10 to 0-03 half time advantage. Tadgh Walsh roofed the only and match winning goal on 53 minutes. He had to wait a while but Ronan O’Donoghue was eventually rewarded with the game’s final score right at the death.

Round 2 Phase 2 Coiste na nÓg County U13 Hurling League

St Catherines v Whitechurch

It happens to the best of teams. “Oh my mama told me there’ll be days like this”!!! Whitechurch were better from throw in and in Garret O’Sullivan, Daniel O’Doherty and in particular Dean O’Leary had three of the best players on the pitch for this league game played early in Ballynoe on Sunday morning last. Look there’s plenty more games in a full program throughout summer (when it comes!). Though for obvious reasons there won’t be a fixture this weekend. Space reserved for fourteens and what we hope will be a big day in Croker. To the players listen to your coaches, they’re all good guys and happy times will come again.

Scorers: K O’Connell (0-01 free) (1-01), D Temple (0-02). St Catherine’s team: P O’Sullivan, J Mulkerrins, G Leamy, Z Pyne, C Fitzgerald, S O’Keeffe, A O’Gorman, K O’Connell, T Shiels, N Keane (match captain), S Maguire, J Bryan, D Temple, B Coakley. Referee: David Hickey (Youghal).

Condolences

Our sympathy goes out to the Sheehan and Mangan families and extended family on the passing of Nora O’Brien, Tallow. While the country as a whole in some way would have felt the loss of legendary commentator Micheál O Muircheartaigh. It’s amazing the loss of Con Houlihan had the same impact. To be over simplistic, O’Muircheartaigh for the spoken word, Con Houlihan for the written and almost legendary prose. Both would have the vision to be able to stretch beyond Gaelic parameters. Micheál at home when discussing dogs or golf. Con a diehard rugby man and fan. Both proud Kerry men. Con a Castleisland native, Micheál was born just outside Dingle and grew up there. Moved onto Coláiste Iosagáin, Ballyvourney, still there but sadly empty. Finished teacher training in St Patrick’s College, Drumcondra. He taught in mostly CBS schools around Dublin. One of his most famous pupils was singer Luke Kelly. He was a legendary commentator. Though one feels his style wouldn’t resonate with television viewers. He blossomed on the radio. Or what we labelled way back The Wireless. Cork v Down in the All-Ireland Senior football final and subsequent international rules test in 2010 were his final commentaries prior to calling it a day.
