Hill capture league title

RedFM Intermediate Hurling League Division 5 Final

Watergrasshill 4-23 (35)

Tracton 1-19 (22)

Our intermediates comfortably took the Division 5 league title on Saturday evening in Mayfield on Saturday evening against Tracton and whilst you never wanted to tempt fate, the hill were comfortably throughout.

Given the previous league encounter back in March was a low scoring affair with the hill winning by 0-11 to 0-12, this game proved to be anything but low scoring.

Within 40 seconds of the throw in, Adam Murphy laid down a marked when he registered the first of his 2 goals on the night and when Murphy added a further point on 5 minutes – the hill were 1-01 up before Tracton knew what had hit them. Tracton registered their first point on 5 minutes, but Ciarán O’Leary, Paudi O’Leary and Adam Murphy raised further white flags for the hill, to leave us 1-04 to 0-1 up on the 6 minute mark – a whirlwind start indeed.

Tracton just had no answer to the combination of Sean Desmond, Adam Murphy and Paudi O’Leary up front, and with Mike O’Driscoll, Ian O’Callaghan and Chris Healy dominating at half back – it was looking good already for the hill.

The hill had stretched the lead to 10 points (1-09 to 0-2) after 15 minutes, but Tracton registered 4 points without reply to close the gap to 6 points, but when Murphy added his second goal to a Desmond Point – the gap was back to 10 points, 2-10 to 0-6. Tracton added a further 4 scores without reply before the break, leaving it 2-11 to 0-10, but something drastic  would be needed if this game was to go the Tracton way. The teams traded scores in the opening period of the second half before Brendan Lehane finished off a superb team goal on 16 minutes, making it 3-18 to 0-13. The introduction of Cork star Daire O’Leary mid-way through the second half for Chris Healy further braced the hill’s defense however Tracton eventually raised a green flag on 18 minutes. Murphy registered a further 2 points from place balls and Paudi O’Leary put the icing on the cake with a goal on 29 minutes. When Niall Fahy blew for full-time, much to the delight of the hill crowd, the final score was 4-23 to 1-19, a 13 point victory to the Hill. Seán Desmond accepted the trophy on behalf of his team mates which was the cue for a busy night in The Hut for John & Betty O’Neill. Some great scenes at full time, when delighted family and friends congratulated the lads, but Eddie Enright was keen to allow the lads celebrate the win, with one eye keenly focussed on the Championship opener against Carrigaline on August 3rd

Under 10’s in action

Well done to our U-10 boys who travelled to Ballynoe last weekend and played 2 great games against St. Catherine’s. Super to see the boys enjoying their hurling and thanks too to the U9’s who fell in to help with a few abscences due to summer holidays. Well done boys.

Good Luck Daire

Everyone involved in Watergrasshill GAA and indeed from the entire Watergrasshill / Glenville parish wish Dáire O’Leary and the Cork Senior hurling panel the very best of luck in the upcoming All-Ireland final against Claire.

Dáire has been an ambassador for our club since his underage days and not only does his work rate, skill and determination make him a superb hurler, he is also a humble and gracious young man, and we are all very proud of his achievements to date.
