Glenville Notes (25th Jun)

U18
We played our first U18C3 league game in quite a while last Wednesday night on a beautiful summer’s evening in Glenville. Ballincollig was the opposition on the night with what was effectively their third team vs. our second team. We had a solid start with a few well taken scores from across the forward line, with the backs keeping it tight. Whilst Ballincollig always looked dangerous, we did a good job keeping them at bay and at half time had a decent lead of eight points to three. As the second half progressed Ballincollig found their feet and came to within a point of us with two goals. However, a drive forward resulting in Louie being taken down in the box and Shayne duly converted the penalty on his return to action to open up our lead again. A few late well worked scores from Louie saw the lead stretch out with Glenville finishing on the right side of a 1-16 to 2-7 scoreline. With all players getting plenty game time and a really good scoring return there was a lot of positives to take from this performance, particularly the performance of the younger players, with the team made up of U17s, U16s and two U16s.

Team and scorers: H.Wain; C.Buckley, C.McHugh, R.Horgan; C.Sheehan(0-1), D.O’Neill, A.Casey; S.Callinan, S.O’Leary (0-1); A.Hennessy, E.Forde (0-2), J.Hennebry (0-2); E.Hartnett, D.Barry (0-2), S.Curtin (1-2); L.Guichard (0-4) D.McCarthy, J.Kelleher(0-2), F.Duffy.

U17 Seven aside
On Sunday we hosted a seven aside U17 football tournament in Glenville as part of the St. John’s celebrations. We had eight teams in total, Glanmire, Killavullen, Kilworth-Araglin, St. Vincent’s, Clyda Rovers, St. Michael’s and two Glenville teams, one made up of U17s and the other being U16s supported by a few U15s. On a spectacular morning of sunshine, it was a fantastic setting for football and over the course of two hours there were twelve group games played, made up of two groups of four, the winners of each meeting in a shield final and the runners-up in a plate final. Both Glenville teams acquitted themselves well, both winning one game and being narrowly defeated in the others. The shield final was eventually won by Clyda Rovers, defeating St, Vincents in a hotly contested final and Glanmire won the plate final, defeating a game Killavullen side. With the success of this format, it is certainly something we would like to repeat again, credit due to Richie Cahill for the format and the organization of the event.
