Castlemartyr Notes (19th Jun)

Intermediate League

Castlemartyr lost out to Mayfield on a 2-16 to 0-16 scoreline in our penultimate game of the league season. It leaves the reds on six points and looking over their shoulder as they head to meet Watergrasshill in what will be championship rehearsal.

The damage was done early by Mayfield on Sunday morning at Paddy Walsh Memorial Park, as the city side raced into an advantage of 2-3 to 0-1 by minute 13th. At this juncture, only Darragh Leahy had found the target as, in general, the radar seemed to be out in the opening exchanges. Thereafter, Castlemartyr more than matched their opponents, but Mayfield did what they had to do and balanced our scores to see them record a fourth win of the campaign.

No doubt injuries are playing a massive part in the Castlemartyr camp at the moment and with exams and holidays added to the mix, the squad is now lacking in numbers. Hopefully, by the time the Bank Holiday weekend dawns in early August, the treatment table will be much quieter.

As for Sunday's game - a good spell before the interval gave real signs of hope, as well taken points by Barry Lawton, Andrew Kelly and Dave Lawton had seen us build up some momentum late on. Half time arrived, and our new scoreboard - kindly sponsored by Cliffords Craft Butchers/ Foodstore and Bar, produced its first half time tally - Mayfield 2-6 Castlemartyr 0-7.
Into the second half as the teams exchanged points regularly, the margin was down to 4 on 54 minutes when Barry Lawton got one of the scores of the day after a great ball by Conor Whyte. Two minutes later and Andrew Kelly's free had it at a one score game. However, Mayfield hit three on the spin to regain authority on the scoreboard, and the margin was back to six.

Scorers - A Kelly 0-7 frees, Barry Lawton 0-6, D Leahy, D Lawton and C Ronayne 0-1 each.

State Of Play

It's looking busy at the bottom end of the table, where Cloyne on 5 points and Argideen Rangers on 4 points are now the only teams below us. Our visit to "The Hill" in a few weeks' time will be interesting in that our opponents are already in the league final, where they will face either Aghabollogue or Tracton. The last series of games see Cloyne in Ballygarvan and Argideen facing a stiff test away to Aghabollolgue. Still a number of possibilities, so fingers crossed for a positive result and a bit of better luck on the injury front. Currently, that game against Watergrasshill is scheduled for Saturday week at 7.30pm.
