First League Win for Seniors

We welcomed Mallow to Castlelyons last Thursday in our 3rd league outing for the year. We welcomed back a few players to the starting team that have been missing from the previous league outings due to injuries. In what was a decent team performance we controlled the game for large parts of the game and ended up winning by ten points on a scoreline of 0-22 to 0-13. Castlelyons played with a light breeze in the first half and began the stronger with Cees Kouwenburg winning a free after heading for goal with his first possession. Brian O’Donovan slotted the free with his usual accuracy. James Kearney scored our first point from play when Colm McCarthy found him in space with a pinpoint ball. Leon Doocey was making his mark in the game as well with 2 brilliant points from play and winning a couple of frees. It was great to see him coming back after a stint on the sidelines. Soon after Leon won a long puck out from Jack and played a delightful stick pass into the hand of the on rushing Ronan Fenton who bisected the posts to leave us 0-08 points to 0-02 after 15 mins. Conor McCarthy was hurling well at wing back and fired over a great point from distance. Brian O’Donovan was firing over the points from play and from frees to help extend our lead. Jack Barry also got in on the act with a long-range score from a placed ball. We went in 0-15 to 0-06 at the break in a lively first half performance. Mallow started the 2nd half better and scored 3 points in a row from frees to reduce the gap. Substitute Eoin Maye played a first time ball on the ground to Cees Kouwenburg in the full forward line and he collected and duly converted to steady the ship. Mallow responded with a point from play but Cees found the target again with his 2nd point. Castlelyons were doing very well against a physically bigger Mallow side but our superior skill levels shone out in the end. 2nd half sub Alan Fenton scored 3 points (2 frees) to increase our lead. Mallow had a goal disallowed for a square ball with 12 minutes remaining and the result never seemed in doubt from this point. Another substitute Jack Kenny popped up with an insurance score on 61 mins to leave the final score 0-22 to 0-13
