Imokilly Under 21 Championship Group A Round Three
Lisgoold 2-14 (20)
Castlemartyr 0-23 (23)
At Castlemartyr
November 26th 2023
In the last fixture for the adult club, in this last group stage game our under 21’s had a rip-roaring start with O’Driscoll raising two green flags in quick succession. This rattled Castlemartyr who battle gamely to get back into the contest. Two pointed frees from Oran Savage and a point from Mark Hegarty gave us some breathing space. The hosts kept in touch with some good scores and at the halfway point of the first we were ahead by two points (2-3 to 0-7). The rest of the half was a good contest with every ball being fought for. Rory, Seán and Eoin doing well in Defence whilst Tom Oran and Mark were doing the damage in attack and with Rory McSweeney adding a white flag as well it was looking rosy for us come the half-time whistle with the blue and gold leading by two points (2-7 to 0-11).
The second half our lads were doing fine and started well with James O’Leary and Oran Adding to Lisgoold’s tally and coming to the 44th minute it was 2-9 to 0-11. However just like the Taylor vs Cameron fight the Taylor had a rough start but an excellent finish with her opponent dead on feet for the finish. This was the case here as well, as the hosts got a grip of the game and took over and once, they gained the lead they would never lose it. Our lads had run out of gas and whilst they tried gamely to get back into the game, they just could not manage it and had to sign off on a three-point defeat.
On mature reflection whilst no victory was recorded it wasn’t a bad campaign. They were unlucky not get to get over Cloyne when Lisgoold had fourteen men for the last twenty minutes of that match. The breaks didn’t come their way again when they were down several key players as they were squeezed out by Whitechurch by a single point. It was disappointing in terms of the results but most certainly not in their performances as they played for the club with great passion, pride and skill. 2023 is now finished we look to 2024 with great hope as with these three performances from the under 21’s and the treble winning minors the future is bright for the Gaels of Liosgcúl.

Reeling in the Lisgoold Years
In part five (of six) of our reeling in the years column we continue from 1993 where unknownst to many Lisgoold’s first maiden adult county title was on the horizon however there was slight heartache as they lost a semi-final that year. For this week we go back to the 1993 County (East Cork Section) Final. Then we have a look at the last county championship win the footballers had as they squeezed by Lyre in October 2006 and then finally, we have a look at the second Under 21 hurling title won by the club (and most recent by the club) back in November 2011.
Cork County Junior B Championship Final (East Cork Section)

‘Lisgoold can thank Gentleman’
Lisgoold hurlers qualified to represent East Cork in the county ‘B’ grade hurling championship when they defeated Ballinacurra in the divisional qualifier played at Clonmult Memorial Park on last Friday evening. Lisgoold Dominated the opening quarter with their two scores, both scores being registered by Tom Gentleman from a 20m free in the ninth minute and a great effort from Pete O’Keeffe four minutes later. Yet it was Ballinacurra who led at the end of the first fifteen minutes on the scoreline of 1-1 to 0-2, the village marksmen being Tony O’Shea, form a close in free after ten minutes, and midfielder Vincent O’Sullivan whose long-range effort from a placed ball fell out of the hand of sub goalkeeper Dec O’Shea and over the goal line for the village.
Both sides continued to waste scoring opportunities prior to Lisgoold Captain Liam Walsh narrowing the gap when he raised the white flag from a close in free after being fouled himself in the nineteenth minute. Ballinacurra negatived this score, however, when tony O’Shea was spot on from another placed ball four minutes later. The village should have gone further ahead
minutes later when Aidan Joyce was off target from a very scoreable position. Lisgoold kept plugging away and were amply rewarded when corner-forward the lively Tom Gentleman latched on to a long range Donie Murphy free to breach the village defence for a cracker of a goal after twenty-eight minutes. Four minutes later in injury time the same player repeated the act when he raised another green flag to give the Lisgoold side a four-point interval lead on the scoreline of 2-3 to 1-2.
Both sides looked evenly matches with Ballinacurra inclined to dominate the second quarter until Tom Gentleman’s goals gave the favourites a four-point interval lead. Still, it looked to be anybody’s game.
Gentleman further increased the Lisgoold lead when he lashed over a great point from a 40-metre free practically on the side-line after just sixty seconds on the resumption. After both Vincent O’Sullivan and Brian Woods lost scoring chances Gentleman again showed Lisgoold the way with another fabulous white flag, again from a placed ball directly on the left touchline 45 meters out in the thirty fifth minute of the game. Mike Barry who had replaced Liam Hickey at half-time increased the Lisgoold lead with a fine point from play sixty seconds later. Ballinacurra returned to the offensive and Eoin McCarthy was narrowly wide from play before a bullet-like drive from Aidan Joyce struck the crossbar in the forty-second minute with the Lisgoold keeper beaten all ends up. Following a fine clearance by star defender Donie Murphy the Kerryman Tom Gentleman riffled over another white flag to give the wearers off the blue and gold jerseys a commanding eight-point lead after three quarters of an hour’s play.
Tony O’Shea was off target from play for the village entering the last quarter with Michael Cronin and Peter O’Keeffe doing likewise for the blue and gold before Ballinacurra got a fortuitous goal from a long range free taken by wing back Mark O’Sullivan which completely deceived goal-keeper O’Shea and wound up in the back of the net. This score left five points between the teams but failed to inspire Ballinacurra who could only register only one more score, a point, from play by Eric Harty after both Donie Murphy and substitute Seamus Fleming raised further white flags for Lisgoold and to cap a fine performance corner forward Brian Woods struck another goal from play with a minute remaining to give Lisgoold the honours on a nine point winning margin over a very inexperienced Ballinacurra side.
However, if the winners are to advance in the county championship their forwards will have to straighten up in their shooting efforts as they recorded a total of fourteen wides over the sixty-three minutes played. Basically, the difference between the teams was one Tom Gentleman, the ex-Kilmoyley star contributed a total of 2-4. Tom was the biggest thorn in the village’s defence, ably assisted by Brian Woods, Pete O’Keeffe, and Mike Barry, when he came on for the second half, with centre back Donie Murphy brilliant throughout and Mike Woods and the great-hearted Ned O’Keeffe well on top in defence. Eric Harty, the Sullivans, John Condon, Eoin McCarthy and Tony O’Shea all tried hard for the Ballinacurra men. Man of the match – Tom Gentleman

Cork County Junior B Football Championship Quarter-Final
Lisgoold 0-12 (12)
Lyre 1-8 (11)
At Fermoy
October 7th 2006
‘Lyre leave it too late as Lisgoold hold on for one-point win’
Lisgoold survived a sustained Lyre challenge in the county Junior B Football Championship quarter-final in Fermoy last Saturday. At key stages, Lisgoold had the class to pull through, yet the East Cork side were forced to mount a desperate late defensive effort to keep their revitalised opponents at bay. The first half was a tight affair with Hurley, McCarthy and Maurice O’Connell solid in defence for the Imokilly team whilst their Duhallow opponents had Buckley, Twomey and O’Keeffe in their defensive ranks holding well. It was a very tense opening ten minutes with both defences being on top for most of the opening exchanges.
Lyre appeared good enough to succeed after coming within reach of their opponents, yet Lisgoold regained their earlier initiative to sway matters during the latter stages. Earlier Lisgoold had settled into a decent rhythm with a range of points to Kieran O’Shea and an excellent score from Ciaran Cronin. Though Lyre opened their account from a David Murphy pointed free, Lisgoold remained strong and resolute. In fact, to the blue and gold’s credit they excelled in the first half and put together some excellent attacking football.
That was attributed to the positive input of Jamie Hurley, county minor hurler Brian Clifford, Noel Connery, John Paul O’Brien and Charlie Smart. And upfront, Wayne Kingston and a razor-sharp Ger O’Connell piled on the points to boost Lisgoold’s position 0-8 to 0-2 at the break. It looked the match was done and dusted with Lisgoold in a very strong position.
Even though Barry Aherne added a point to Lisgoold, the Duhallow representatives chipped away at the deficit on pointed free to David Murphy. And Lyre were back in the hunt when John Lane placed Conor O’Keeffe to drill home a very good goal. Lisgoold replied on a point by young Clifford, yet Lyre’s game grew on the ascendancy. Lending key contributions were Denis and Damien Mannix together with O’Keeffe, substitute Colm O’Riordan and Damien Kearney. Lyre were going in confidence with every score as the game wore on and Lisgoold seemed to be struggling to hold on their lead that they worked so hard to build up in the first half.
Lyre seemed to be in pole position with a trio of points by David Murphy, Kearney and O’Keeffe left the minimum between the sides. Lisgoold however woke from their slumber and read the danger with substitutes Maurice Mulcahy and Patrick O’Mahony combing very well with the latter pointing - it proved to be the critical score of the tie. Credit to Lyre on never giving up the chase, Murphy pointing but try as they might, Lyre just failed to save the day. Lisgoold will most likely need to improve on their performance as they take on the might of Clann na Gael in a fortnights time.

‘Lisgoold Under 21 team secure a magnificent East Cork Double in a feisty encounter’
A beautiful autumnal Sunday morning in Ballynoe saw these two neighbouring sides contest the East Cork “C” grade Championship decider, where the sides notched thirteen scores apiece. Three goals, however by John Cashman, John Cronin and a fortuitous Rob Smart long ranger saw our boys home. The hurling on show was never less than wholehearted but the standard never rose above the ordinary, as perhaps nerves on the big stage got to both sides. An excellent hour from Alan Conroy was the pick of the displays whilst Cathal Cashman and Peter Leahy defended well in support of solid centre back and skipper Conor Walsh. A degree of petty fouling and petulance on both sides limited the free-flowing hurling, and the free takers on both sides were busy throughout, with John Cashman rebounding from a twitchy start to punish every indiscretion in the closing half hour and close out the game successfully in our favour to attain the clubs second Under 21 hurling title and a first magnificent double.
