Lisgoold GAA Notes.

  • Nov 24,2023

A huge congratulations to the minor hurling squad on winning their league title last week, the have now completed a hurling Treble. Well done all and if it weren’t for Castlelyons a further two football titles (League and Championship) could have been added but alas not to be. A huge congratulations to all, with several teams having titles collected this season 2023 has been an excellent haul for the Juvenile club. The Under 21’s are the last team in action for the adult club, unfortunately are out of the hurling as Cloyne comprehensively defeated Castlemartyr last Sunday (3-22 to 0-10). So, for there is one last fixture for the year and last shot a silverware and that honour goes to our under 16 hurlers who play Killeagh in Bishopstown - next Saturday week. We appeal to everyone to head out and roar them on as they aim to end a wonderful season on an excellent high. Also please note The Annual General Meeting for 2023 is on Monday 4th December in the Clubhouse at 7.30pm. Nomination Forms are available to members, please contact Keith on 086-8244833 for a copy of the forms.

U13 Division 1 Hurling League final

Youghal          5-9 (24)

Lisgoold          2-7 (13)

At Bishopstown

November 13th 2017

To say they went down with their boots on is an understatement. A talented mixed age under-13 Lisgoold team were beaten on the day by a very good Youghal team who had 95% up to the age. A wild blustery day in Bishopstown saw Youghal win the toss chose to play with the wind. Lisgoold were also without their centre back James Doyle so a bit of rejigging before the game even started.

Youghal started fast and two early goals made them seem unbeatable but a bit of tactical changes from the bench saw a stop to Youghal’s free scoring. Liam O’Dywer was moved back as a 7th defender and the extra body worked wonders as Lisgoold stopped the Youghal scoring tide and got on the board themselves with a point from Kyle Murphy quickly followed by a great free from Kai Savage. Led by Kyle Murphy up top Lisgoold fought their way back into the game to leave it more even at half time than it looked after 10 minutes.

In the 2nd half Lisgoold went on the attack, a lovely score from Cian Landers straight from the restart gave Lisgoold momentum and at one stage they got it back to 5 points as Youghal seemed to wilt under the pressure from Lisgoold backs, Sean Cullinane clearing a lot of ball. Youghal hit 5 wides in a row as the pressure from the half backs made Youghal attackers take shots from unfavourable angles.

All the time Lisgoold were keeping the scoreboard ticking over. The score of the game starting from a save by James Forrest, twice more Youghal seemed to win the ball back in around the square but the Lisgoold backs would not let the shot off and we cleared the ball up to halfway, a savage pick up on the run from Liam O Dwyer, he burst thru and let fly from 50 yards to give a great score, realistically it was a 4 point swing, we all begin to think maybe just maybe it will be our day, but Youghal were going to show what they were made of, they were not going to continue to miss. The Youghal full forward line were a great unit, very unselfish and passed the ball to the man in a better position everything, James Forrest made some fine saves, but Youghal always had a man to sweep the ball into the net. Two goals in the first five mins, three goals in the last five mins means no matter how brave your team is it’s hard to come out on top when goals are so valuable. But this Lisgoold u13 team did not give in and went again and Kyle Murphy scored his 2nd goal of the game, but the gap was just too much.

This Lisgoold team are one to keep an eye on. There is no doubt we will be watching them in many more finals as the years go by.

Scorers on the day for Lisgoold:

Kyle Murphy 2-4 (0-3f)

Liam O Dwyer 0-1

Kai Savage 0-1(f)

Cian Landers 0-1

Minor Hurling League Final (AET)

Lisgoold                      2-19 (25)

Watergrasshill             3-12 (21)

At Watergrasshill

November 22nd 2023

I dunno, these under 17 games should come with a health warning, I dunno do these players do it on purpose!!

Brisk night underlights in Glenville to take on the only team that had beaten the Minors this year, Watergrasshill, it was going to be something of a free hit for this bunch as the county campaign had left its mark with 3 key players Kane Walsh, Killian Beirne and Colm Garde all missing, 2 of them being on the age, another few lads that took to the pitch were carrying knocks it was going to be an interesting watch. Lisgoold in fairness gave their customary eight-point head start with Watergrasshill hitting 2-2 in the first five mins. Sweet Jesus it didn't look good.

Suddenly the switch flicked, this team will fall short somewhere but led again by Jol "Not today" as every player lifted, the transition from Astro to grass may have taken 10mins but the lads showed their Hurling and outscored the hill by six points for the last 25 mins of the 1st half. Jol hit four points Jacob Coleman three and a very dangerous Dean Murphy who enjoyed the freedom at wing forward added another. Denis O’Leary was proving a handful at full forward not leaving the back settle and unlucky not to score a goal himself.

The backs must be said did a great job also when the match ups were switched, Adam Byrne, Rory Mac Dara Mac, Dan Nyhan, Conor Holden and the wise beyond his years Dan Guiney were excellent from minute 5 to the end of extra time. Special mention to goalie Conor Dennihy, he has spent some time training with Mossie O’Connell and has done wonders for his confidence allowing his talent to shine. So, to half time 2 points down, a few niggles to be looked at, spray, ice packs bandaging and even some red bull were all prescribed.

Into the 2nd half and it was a battle both teams going toe to toe trading points. A free won by half time sub Zach Collins left just a point in it. Jol moved to familiar role in midfield using his influence to win ball after ball, Cillian Andrade, Daniel Hallihan and Matt Sullivan were probing winning breakdowns surely, we were going to get ahead. Some nice interplay in midfield, ball went to Matt on the left wing, Dean was clever and made a wraparound run outside Matt to free the space, Matt return the favour from the County Final to pick out Jacob who caught the ball, spun the back and fired into the goal!!

But Watergrasshill would not go easy and scored 2 points on the bounce and just like that the final whistle blew, Draw game, AGAIN... Extra Time or Replay, Back the lads on the night or lick our wounds and hope for reinforcements??? All in, we were the better team outside a shaky first 5 mins.

Quick turn around and 2 periods of 10 mins to finish the year. Each team would score twice in the 1st period but the definitive moment of that half would be when Dean pumped a ball forward and 3 men went up for the ball the full back the keeper and the full forward, Jacob wanted it more and got a flick to deceive the keeper and into the goal a free from Jol left us 2 points up going into the last period.

Anyone celebrating was reminded why hurling is the best sport in the world.... The hurling gods had one final twist was in store. Straight from the throw in the hill pumped a long ball in, a scramble and bang Goal and we were a point down just like that. Had the Minors anything left in the tank? Of course, they did. Rory Mac was a rock at the back and rallied his troops to make sure Watergrasshill wouldn't be left score again, Lisgoold would put over 5 unanswered points Jol Dean, Jol, Dean and Captain James O Leary with the last point. A deserved win overall and a cracker of a year. Victory in East Cork, a County and now League winners. A nice hurling treble for the Club.

Scorers on the night

James O Leary 0-10(0-7f)

Jacob Coleman 2-05(0-2f)

Dean Murphy 0-04

Reeling in the Lisgoold Years

In part four of our reeling in the years column we have a snapshot of activities in the juvenile club in August 1993. Bob O’Sullivan had ignited a conveyor belt as success that was glorious as well as continuous. In this article we see how the Under 12 completed and unprecedented three in a row albeit in strange circumstances. The ending was similar to Dublin vs Cork in a 1987 league quarter-final, the under 14 won a thriller of an east cork in Castlemartyr and the Under 16 were rocking east cork as well. The highlight thought was a trip to Dublin to See Cork vs Mayo in the all-Ireland semi-final (Cork Won 5-15 to 0-10). Also we tip our hat back to just six years ago when the 2017 minors broke ground and won the clubs first county championship title….

Extract from Lisgoold Parish Journal - September 1993

Under-12

The under 12 League Championship was won again this year for the third year in a row. Expectations at the start of the year were not high as only four of last year’s team remained. Several players were tried out in the start of the League and the team were not so successful. As the League progressed the team began to start winning and the semi-final against Russell Rovers was a great game of football. Behind seven points at the interval the lead was gradually clawed back and Lisgoold went ahead by a goal with four minutes remaining. However, Russell Rovers were not finished and went a goat ahead with two minutes remaining. We thought we were out of the Championship, but we had not reckoned with the heart of this team, who came back in the last minute to score a goal and then a point to clinch victory.

On to the final against Dungourney at Rathcormac. Another good game of football with Dungourney on top in the first half and Lisgoold in the second, the game ended in a draw. The replay again in Rathcormac took place a week later. This time Lisgoold dominated the first half and led by five points at the interval. Dungourney dominated the start of the second half and led by four points with five minutes left. Again, the spirit of this team came to the fore, and they completely dominated the last five minutes to draw level and would surely have won had there been any more time left. Final score, Lisgoold 4-2 Dungourney 3-5. According to rule extra time must be played after the second draw. Lisgoold stayed on the field, but Dungourney failed to appear. The game bizarrely restarted with our lads easily getting a score straight away and the match then stopped by the referee. At a subsequent Board meeting the match was awarded to Lisgoold even though their delegate wanted a replay. So irrespective of that congratulations to all involved on winning three in a row.

Team: Timmy O'Callaghan, Patrick Connery, Noel O' Riordan, Owen Hegarty, Patrick Geary, Sean Twomey (capt.), Ronnie O'Reilly, James Hurley, Barry Ahern, Brian Lahive, Jonathon O'Shea, Brian O'Shea, Kieran Stack, Barry O'Brien, Shane Cronin.

Substitutes: Maurice O'Brien, Dan O'Leary, Denis O'Brien, John Raymond Fitzgerald, Martin O'Brien, Barry McCarthy, Damian Parker, Daniel Murphy, Stephen O'Shea, Brian Clifford, David Byrne, Damian O' Keeffe, Wayne Kingston, Niall O' Riordan, Michael O' Riordan, Donal Cashman, Rosaleen O' Regan, Eileen Ahern, Una Twomey, Eibhlis Coleman.

Under-14

A good show was expected from us under 14's as they had won the first ever Under-12 Championship for the Club two years previously. This Championship was played on a League basis as well. In this Lisgoold beat Russell Rovers both at home and away but we were beaten by Castlemartyr first in Castlemartyr by about ten goals when we had a few absentees and at home by four goals with a full team. As the two top teams qualified in the final Lisgoold and Castlemartyr met at Cloyne in the final with Peter Hegarty, Cloyne in charge of the whistle. Castlemartyr dominated the early exchanges but failed to score and Lisgoold were two points ahead. Castlemartyr came back and scored three points when Lisgoold were awarded a penalty which was brilliantly scored by John Murphy. Castlemartyr however came back for two goals to lead at the interval on the score 2-4 to 1-2.

It was score by score at the start of the second half and with ten minutes remaining Castlemartyr led by seven points. It was then that the character of this Lisgoold team surfaced. Just as they had won the under 12 title against the second half odds two years previously, they began to whittle away at the lead and with two minutes remaining were just three points behind when Brian O'Sullivan gave a perfect pass to Aidan Forrest and as Michael Elland would say he billowed the net and the sides were level. From the kick out Castlemartyr attacked but the attack was broken up by Kieran O'Shea and having soloed fifty yards the captain drove straight between the uprights and Lisgoold were ahead and time almost up. The defence held out and Lisgoold were winning, and their large following were thrilled. Final score, Lisgoold 3-9 to Castlemartyr 3-8.

The Secretary of the East Cork Board John Joe O' Regan presented the winning captain Kieran O'Shea with the Shield and complimented both teams on a great sporting game. And he gave advice to all the youngsters present to stay away from drink, cigarettes and drugs, a sentiment which was echoed in the dressing room afterwards by the trainer who said you never miss what you never had. Kieran suitably replied on behalf of the team. All the Castlemartyr team remained for the presentation disappointed and all as they must have been, and their mentors called to the Lisgoold dressing room afterwards to express their congratulations.

The Lisgoold team returned to Donal Woods' afterwards where all the panel and their younger sisters and brothers were treated to lemonade, crisps and chocolate by the proprietor. Donal wouldn't take a penny for all this and the juvenile club would like to thank him most sincerely. He has done the same thing for the three previous under 12 wins.

Under-14 1993 Squad

Team: John Paul Rohan, Declan O' Mahony, Denis Murphy, Declan Barry, Liam Mulcahy, Eoin O' Riordan, Kieran O' Shea, John Paul O’Brien, John Murphy, Padraig Ryan, Brian O'Sullivan, Noel Connery, Kevin Cronin, Aidan Forrest, Liam Twomey.

Substitutes: Paul O' Brien came on as a sub in the first half. Brian O' Riordan, Maurice O' Connell, Brian O'Keeffe, Sean Twomey, Daniel O' Brien, James Hurley, Shane McCarthy, Stephen O' Mahony.

Under-16

Our under 16's are also progressing well in the Championship which is also played on a league basis. They beat an under strength Ballinacurra rather easily and then Russell Rovers on the score 3 goals 8 points to 1 goal 5 points with Paul Stack, Donal O’Leary and Michael O’Shea playing superbly for the blue and gold.

Team: Michael O' Keeffe, Colin O' Brien, Keith Purcell, Eoin O' Riordan, John Barry, Michael O' Shea, Jerry O' Connell, Randel Hurley, Connie O'Keeffe, Kieran O'Shea, Paul Stack, Michael Barry, Shane Howick, Donal O'Leary, Charlie McCarthy.

Substitutes: Fiacra Lombard, Paul O' Mahony, Aidan Forrest.

Summer Camp

Fourteen or fifteen players from the club in the 12 or 13 age group attended the summer camp at Midleton G.A.A. grounds from July 26th to 30th. Here they were coached on the skills of the games, both hurling and football by a team of experts which included Tom Nott, who is the county hurling coach and has called to the schools, and Brian Corcoran. Everyone who attended was delighted with the week and the East Cork Juvenile Board are to be complimented on initiating the scheme.

Trip to Dublin

What has nearly become an annual event took place this year to coincide with the Cork / Mayo All Ireland Semi-Final on the 15th of August 1993. A 53-seater bus which was full to capacity left Lisgoold at 8 o'clock on Saturday morning. About 40 children and 13 adults were on board. Apart from two brief stops to get over a couple of bouts of travel sickness the first stop was at Urlingford for about 30 minutes. We arrived outside Croke Park at one o'clock and collected tickets for the following day. From there we proceeded to the Marino Institute of Education where we were staying calling to the St. Vincents G.A.A. grounds (our host club) on the way.

A match had been arranged with Vincents that evening at six o'clock. We walked to the grounds which were only next door but about a mile around by the streets on a drizzly afternoon. Vincents were already out on the field, and we found out that it was they’re under 13 team so we drafted in all our older players who happened to have brought their gear with them. We played well in the first half, but Vincents greater skill told afterwards. It must be remembered that Vincents in football in Dublin would be the equivalent of Glen Rovers in Cork in hurling and Kevin Heffernan, Des Foley and Jimmy Keaveney would be past players with Eamonn Heary a present intercounty man. After the match we were treated to tea or lemonade and sandwiches and that great full forward of the 70's and 80's Jimmy Keaveney spoke to the lads. Afterwards we went back to where we were staying; the Cork minor team were also staying there, where the lads watched television or played games for the rest of the night.

Up next morning at 8.00 and after breakfast at 9.00 we went to Mass in the loca1 church. After Mass we came back and packed our gear into the bus and headed off to Vincent’s G.A.A. grounds again where the Cork Senior team were to be training. Unfortunately, that was not to be until 1 o'clock and we had to get to Croke Park before that to take up our positions for the minor match. We were under the Cusack Stand near Hill 16 where we had a very good view of the games. Unfortunately, both games were very one sided, but we feel the lads were happy when Cork won.

After the game it was back to the bus for the journey home, the first stop being Newbridge where the lads were treated to a meal from funds left over from the event. From there to home we had song, stories and crack with young and not so young taking part and there was no let up until we landed in Lisgoold at 11 o'clock on Sunday night. A great weekend was had by all and can be summed up by a remark which one young lad passed to one of the organisers after getting off the bus 'Thanks very much for a lovely weekend'. All the organising for the trip was done by John Joe O' Regan.

On the Thursday night previously, an Irish night was held in Woods' Bar with Charlie McAllister as M.C. A great night’s entertainment was provided, and some funds were raised for the trip. the Juvenile Club would like to thank everyone who provided spot prizes for the event. They would also like to thank the Junior Club, Neily Horgan, Midleton, and a local who wishes to remain anonymous for their contributions. Go raibh mile maith agaibh.

Cork Minor B Hurling Final

Lisgoold          2-14 (20)

Newcestown   1-14 (17)

At Ballincollig

November 13th 2017

Minor Hurlers Make Club History with Maiden County Championship Title.

Our minor hurlers secured an historic first minor county Championship title this month after repelling a very brave second-half Newcestown comeback in the County Minor B decider in Ballincollig on Sunday, Nov 13. The club had won a minor league title in 2003 led by Brian Clifford, Ciaran Cronin (coach with this minor team) but this was the first county championship title won and what a title it was. Despite leading 2-7 to 0-5 at half-time, you got the sense that this game could go to the wire as the sides were very even from general play. In the end, Lisgoold’s superior conversion rate was the main difference between the sides. Newcestown started the game well with 2 points fired over in the opening 2 minutes. But Lisgoold soon responded with a flurry of points from Liam O’Shea and an inspiring score from dynamic wing-back Cathal Hickey and the sides were level on 5 minutes. Newcestown continued to win the lion’s share of possession, and deployed a sweeper to limit Liam O’Shea at full forward but their shooting was wayward from play and placed balls. In contrast, Lisgoold through LiamO converted frees to keep the scoreboard ticking over. The decisive period of the game came on 24 minutes. Declan O’Brien found LiamO, now operating at centre-forward, with an angled pass. Receiving the ball outside the 40 m line but with goal on his mind, LiamO took the defence on and beat 4 defenders before firing low into the bottom corner of the net off his left side. Lisgoold put pressure on the resultant puck-out and when Rob Williams gained possession, he bore down on goal with a similar finish to leave the scoreline 2-07 to 0-03.  Jason Hegarty chipped in with another point, again after a direct run, before Newcestown responded with 2 points.

On the restart to the 2nd half, Newcestown produced a remarkable turnaround and the scoreline was 2-12 to 1-11 on 21 minutes. However, LiamO continued to punish some poor Newcestown discipline and any placed ball from 90 m was within his range. Newcestown continued to push and into added time, the deficit was down to 2 points. Deep into added time, LiamO landed another fine score from the right wing. Newcestown pressed for a goal to bring the decider into extra-time. However, the uncompromising U16 half-back line of Cathal Hickey, Robbie Kinnane and Mark Hegarty were immense and behind them, Sean Whelan, Luke Walsh and James O’Driscoll managed to keep Newcestown at bay. On a final note, spare a thought for Cian Healy, one of the driving forces behind this team who suffered a cruciate ligament injury a few week ago. Cian was a rock at full back all year and contributed greatly to this team getting to the final.

Lisgoold: James Murphy, Sean Whelan, Luke Walsh, James O Driscoll, Cathal Hickey, Rob Kinnane, Mark Hegarty, Jamie Browne, Jason Hegarty, Liam Stack, Aidan McDonagh, Rob Williams, Evan Manning, Liam O Shea, Declan O’Brien.

Substitutes: Darragh Desmond, Liam Walsh, Cian Healy, Emmet Roche, Cormac Hallahan, Shane Byrne, Fionn McSweeney, Dan Power, Mark O’Keeffe, Sean Murphy.

Scorers: Liam O Shea 1-12, Rob Williams 1-0, Cathal Hickey 0-1, Jason Hegarty 0-1.
