Lisgoold GAA Notes.
- Sep 23,2023
It was end of the road for the hurlers as the succumbed to a one-point defeat to Mayfield in the Intermediate Championship. The second string lost out to Aghada and go into Round two of the relegation round robin needing at least a draw to have a chance of survival. However, given the disappointment in the hurling it’s a big weekend for football in the club. The Lisgoold footballers reached the Jim Ryan Cup final for the third time in the club’s history. They will play Carrignavar this Saturday in Glenville at 6.30pm the very Best of luck Men. I urge everyone to wear their colours and come out and support the lads as the battle to claim the Imokilly title for the first time. The very best of luck to ye Men!
Cork Intermediate Hurling Quarter-Final
Lisgoold 0-18 (18)
Mayfield 1-18 (21)
At Cobh
September 16th 2023
Last Saturday afternoon we saw the end of our hurling journey for 2023. In a game that never really got going until mid-way through the second half Lisgoold were put out of the championship by a single score by the boys from the city. The start saw both sides make a good determined start with Nicky Kelly opened the scoring for Mayfield before two from John Cashman and one from Diarmuid Healy helped us to an early lead (0-3 to 0-1 lead). Dave O’Neill (who proved to be Mayfield’s hero on the day) got his first point before John Cashman replied to keep the gap at two after thirteen minutes. Whilst the score taking by both sides was of the highest quality the play during for the first half didn’t match the standard. Given there were a lot of stoppages, mistakes on both sides it was understandable however there importantly a lack of a willingness from the officials to the leave the game flow. This led to a very rigid structure of play mostly in the first half and contributed to a lot of frustration to players and supporters on both sides. There were some super points take by from O’Neill and Kelly of Mayfield which had us level at 0-5 apiece with eighteen minutes gone. O’Donovan O’Neill and a very industrious MJ Coffey also raised white flags, to make it 0-8 to 0-6 in Mayfield’s favour. However, our lads ended the half very well with Diarmuid Healy (who had a great game) raising two white flags, along with scores from Mark Hegarty and James O’Driscoll put us 0-10 to 0-8. Near the end of the half not much of note had but a flashpoint did happen on the 29th minute. A long ball into the Lisgoold area was well marshalled by the Lisgoold defence (Jason Hegarty, Kieran Cashman and Cathal Hickey doing fine for us till this point) which was being cleared by John Cronin. John then was roughly tackled on the head, which most certainly warranted a card (which a yellow was given). The result of this tackle led to John coming off which was a devastating blow to our hopes of winning this tie. So, without much actual hurling played by either side, Lisgoold just about merited their lead of two points at the half-time whistle (0-10 to 0-8).
The start of the second half mirrored the first in terms so great scores being taken by both sides but with very little actual hurling been played. Kelly, O’Neill and Malone were doing the damage for Mayfield whilst John Cashman (Who was outstanding over the hour) Healy and Mark Hegarty replied with white flags for Lisgoold. We were deadlocked at 0-14 apiece with fifteen minutes to go. One of these points for us was by Liam O’Shea from the touchline on the 45 line which was of the highest quality. It was from here on that the game finally sparked to life. With a little more flow to the game being allowed by the officials, it opened up a lot more (which suited both sides). Mayfield were doing that bit more as they found it a small bit easier to attain procession in midfield and had began to creating goal chances. Whilst we were rebutted them successfully, with Jake and Hickey and Cashman (Cathal) in defiant from Mayfield had that momentum with them.
The last ten minutes proved to be a much better fare than what happened for the majority of the match. The game finally ebbed and flowed with chances being created by both sides with Mayfield getting three excellent scores (O’Neill, Malone, and Kelly). There was now a three point gap and suddenly we were beginning to fall behind with Mayfield on the search for that killing blow. The response from our men was wonderful as O’Driscoll, Healy and Liam O’Shea landing some great scores to have us level 0-18 apiece entering injury time. It did look like we were for heading extra time however from a puck out the ball broke to O’Neill of Mayfield. He exploited a gap in the defence rampaged through to strike for goal from twenty-five yards out and got the goal that to be fair Mayfield were threating all through the second half. There wasn’t much time to be played afterwards and the boys form the city went through by three points.
It was a disappointing but not a bad performance by any means. The way our defence adapted after losing John Cronin was highly admirable especially with the no nonsense approach that his replacement made was the right mentality to have at championship time. Even though Mayfield had a much more fight to the game and more hunger, we still could have pulled it out of the fire. Although to be truthful Mayfield had created about four goal chances to our one in the second half and with that greater hunger it was probably just that they would become victorious on this occasion. We wish them the best for the remainder of the championship especially with Kelly and O’Neill in the arsenal they have every chance of winning it out. For our hurlers it was a strange season which we saw some excellent performances in the league (ended up finishing third) and performed well in challenge games (against higher opposition) which spoke well for our chances for this championship. Alas championship is a different beast and whilst at times we played extremely well in our matches, there were other times in this campaign that we didn’t reach the high standards that we been blessed to see in the last five years.
This long break may do these players the world of good, and possibly with a clear mind, energised bodies, and fresh voices 2024 can be another successful hear for the hurlers. For now, football will take over for the rest of 2023 season. We all wish the footballers the best of luck this weekend in the Jim Ryan Cup final. This match on Saturday is another final appearance (This groups seventh in the last four seasons) we know win lose or draw this group of hard-working, honest, and highly talented players have given much many enjoyable days (and nights) out and one has a feeling there is another few coming around the corner.

Imokilly B Hurling Relegation Playoff 1
Lisgoold 1-13 (16)
Aghada 1-19 (22)
At Cobh
September 17th 2023
The second string were quite unlucky in the relegation round robin match against Aghada last Sunday playing with youth and experience they seemed to be going on the right track especially being ahead by three at the sort whistle (1-9 to 0-9). However, Aghada rallied in the second half and maintained their high scoring rate whilst restraining our lads to just four points in the second half. This was the key difference and we had to resign to a six-point defeat. This means now we must get a at least a draw in our game to have any chance of survival. On a positive note we went up to forty-four players being used in championship 2023 which is a healthy sign of an active club.

Cork Junior D Championship Round Four
Lisgoold 9-18 (45)
Muintir Gabriels 2-5 (11)
At Durrus
September 17th 2023
With a home semi final already secured, lisgoold travelled the long road to Durrus last Sunday to finish out the group fixtures and looking at Muintir Gabriels previous results they couldn't help feel confident. This was not to the be case for the 1st 10 mins maybe it was the long trip down but MG were 1.2 to 0.0 after 10 mins and it looked possible MG were on track to get their 1st victory of the group. This hope didn't last very long. Lisgoold opened the floodgates and in what can only be described as an annihilation they came out convincing winners by 34 points. We needed to win by 30 points to take 1st place in the group so this was a nice addition to the victory.
Aimee Savage was the player of the match with her endless running and smart play on the ball. Rachel Moynihan as usual was consistent in defence and up front every one clicked and gave the right pass at the right times which lead to this phenomenal scoreline.
Scorers: Dara Kiniry 5-3, Siomha Walsh 4-4, Laura O’Shea Rebecca Coleman 0-3 each, Aine Hallahan 0-2, Lainey O’Sullivan, Juilanne Stack, Ellie Macassey 0-1 each.

Two games in less than 4 days for the Minor gang, a defeat in either game and season over, first up was a very tough physical game in Cobh, didn't play our best, maybe rusty over so many games being put off over the summer, but definitely didn't deserve to lose so a draw was a fair result in the end. That game definitely stood to them as they hit the ground running v Sars and played some great stuff through the 60mins.An away semi against Fr ONeills seems most likely now.
The u11 panel were in Glanmire Saturday for an inter County Footbal tournament. Agreed day had and some serious footballers coming through, but probably too soon to make the Eat Cork Final Panel this weekend!!
