Junior Camogie Youghal v Erin's Own

Report by Mike O'Brien

On a very blustery Saturday evening last, Youghal overcame a spirited Erin's Own side in the penultimate group game of the of the SE Systems Junior B Camogie championship in Youghal's Top field.

Youghal managed a number of comprehensive wins early in the championship but came up short the previous week against a well-organized Midleton team. On the contrary, Erin's Own found the earlier rounds of the championship very challenging, suffering a number of heavy defeats but really started to grow as the competition progressed.

Youghal were coming into the game without a number of regulars which also added uncertainty to the outcome.

Youghal lost the toss, and had to play against the weather conditions in the first half. However, there was a marked improvement from the previous week and Youghal intensely bombarded the Erin's Own half. However, this dominance did not register on the scoreboard, with the score line 15 minutes in being 1-1 v 0-2 points after 10 minutes in Erin's Own's favour. In that time Youghal hit 5 wides, with an Erin's Own goal coming against the run of play. Erin's Own settled into the game and started to run at Youghal. Both teams traded

scored for the remainder of that half with the 2-point deficit still in place at half time. Youghal again started brightly in the second half with an excellent goal from play from Ciara, but the conditions (now against them) didn't dampen Erin's Own's spirits. They responded immediately with a point to level the game. However, Youghal showed their class with a number of scores, with Amy unerring from placed balls. Youghal defended stoutly with Kate's presence in goals being an important factor, help with the willingness of the Cashman sisters to work tirelessly in the middle of the park. However, Erin's Own didn't fold and continued to keep themselves in contention for the entirety of the game. It was only at the end that the forwards battled hard to allow Sam to finish up with an important goal, ably assisted by Mairead (who was making her first appearance for Youghal in a number of years).

Erin's Own did respond with another point but it was Youghal who came away with the win.

Final score Youghal 2-7 v Erin's Own 1-6

The final round of group games are on this weekend, with Youghal playing a rejuvenated Rockbán team away in Whitechurch on Saturday evening. The permutations are straightforward. The winner will progress, the losers are finished for 2023.

Team: Kate McCarthy, Shauna O'Connell, Donna Colemen, Laura Buckner, Edel O'Connell, Ruby Kennedy, Lesley Cashman, Alex Cashman, Avril Cashman, Ciara Crowley, Amy O'Connell, Rachel Murray, Lauren Ryan, Sam Swayne, Chloe Delaney.

Subs: Saorla O'Leary for Edel, Aoibhe Daly for Chloe (both HT), Mairead Lucey for Lauren (40)

Huge congratulations to the Youghal U12's for winning the county final on Saturday the 16th of September at the Cork Camogie grounds. The final was a closely fought game but Youghal overcame a very strong Newtownshandrum team. A great achievement by a very committed and super bunch of girls

U13 Ladies East Cork Football League winners

Our Youghal U13's Ladies Footballers who won their East Cork league final on Wednesday 6th against St Catherine's.

It was a great reward for the girls who started training back in January.

A tough game but a fine team display to see Youghal pull away in the second half.

Everyone, from 1 to 22 all playing their part in a memorable win.
