Lisgoold GAA Notes.

Adult Club

It was a big weekend for clubs in cork as round two of the hurling championship kicked off in the rebel county and also in Imokilly as the B & C championships have one round. An astronomic battle took place against Aghada in the intermediate championship whilst our second team did battle with Youghal. This week though we will see football return for the Junior A Quarter-finals between against Midleton in Aghavine this Friday at 7pm. Best of luck men. Please come out and support the lads.

Imokilly B Hurling Championship Group B Round 1

Lisgoold          0-15 (15)

Youghal          1-17 (20)

At Cloyne

August 9th 2023

Last week, Hickeys Harriers opened up their championship campaign against Youghal second team in Cloyne. Whilst it was same opposition it didn’t have the same feel as the first team’s championship outing a few days previously. It was a close and cagey start with both sides taking their tie to ease themselves into the game to suss each other out. Eoin Holden, Mossy Connell and Noel O’Driscoll was solid in defence whilst we had the crafty Bill Whelan and Industrious Piaras Fitzpatrick and Oran Savage in attack. The game was going at a steady with both sides deadlocked at 0-4 apiece at the 15th minute mark. Youghal were constantly applying pressure on the Lisgoold defence but were not making much headway. However, the key score arrived in the 21st Minute. A long-range free was pumped into the Lisgoold box by Youghal, the defence failed to deal with it first time and somehow it smuggled its way into the Lisgoold net. Whilst disappointing it didn’t put off Lisgoold from their task and the battle gamely to get back level in this encounter. The stop start rhythm was constant throughout the hour and whilst it was frustrating to not see a more free flowing match the ref did seem to be in full control and Lisgoold were creating chances but couldn’t convert. Come the short whistle it was Youghal who were ahead by three points on a score line of 1-7 to 0-7.

The second half mirrored much of the first half as both teams battled gamely but very little flow to the match as frees were aplenty, Oran Savage taking full opportunity showing a deadly streak (he clocked up 0-7 over the hour on placed balls). However, the blue and gold found it increasingly difficult to breach the Youghal and raising that major to gain parity with the Youghal boys. Coming into the final quarter there was still three between them 1-10 to 0-10. To the managements credit they elected to make changes by bringing on Jay Nagle, Andrew O’Donovan and Ronan Carroll in hope of getting that elusive goal. In the short term it seems to be working as chances kept being created but they couldn’t be converted. Whilst Lisgoold had to put on more pressure on the Youghal defence they left their own backline exposed for Youghal to pick off a few points here and there. Entering the last few minutes, it was 1-14 to 0-14 to Youghal. Unlike that battle we had in Castlemartyr there was no stirring comeback to witness as Youghal managed to see out the clock and tag on two more points to emerge five-point winners.

It was a decent enough game although the lack of flow in the game didn’t help either side. Lisgoold gave as good as they got over the hour and could consider themselves slightly unlucky not to get more from the game. All is not lost there is still two games left in this championship and with the top three in this group to qualify for the quarter-finals. They have Watergrassshill and Castlelyons to play in two weeks’ time.

Cork Intermediate A Hurling Championship Group A Round 2

Lisgoold          2-17 (23)

Aghada           0-22 (22)

At Dungourney

August 12th 2023

Last Saturday Afternoon saw our campaign for the hurling intermediate ‘A’ championship get back on track. This was an excellent game in which like last week represented what club championship is all about skill, passion, and determination when playing for the parish. On a splendid Dungourney pitch, glorious sunshine and a swirling wind was the setting as Clyda Rovers Referee Cathal Egan threw in the sliothar. From the get-go this was a cracker of a game in which Aghada wanted to prove their worth especially after last year’s match. Lisgoold had wonderful start and with the breeze stormed into the lead with John Cash and John Cronin raising the white flag to obtain a three-point lead. Aghada were really up for this from the get-go and tore into Lisgoold with Charlie Terry, Pierce O’Neill, and Will Leahy fighting back. It was a belting start by both sides but it was the Aghada defence that took it one belt too far. After only four minutes Jake O’Donoghue needlessly took a swipe at James O’Driscoll. On first glance it would seem a yellow would have been sufficient but the ref elected to (and bravely by the way being so early in the game) to go for a red card although on later viewing in fairness it was the right decision. However, much like the Youghal game, the men in blue and gold did seem unsure as how to approach the match after this. Aghada fired up by the red card fought back with Terry, Devoy and the excellent Pierce O’Neill getting them a foothold in the game. This was coincided with some wonderful passing and teamwork by the boys in green as they stood up to the constant pressure that was being put onto them by men in blue and gold.

Hits were being traded as well as both teams went to test the other mettle, as the exchanges did get heated and whilst that early red card you think would have cooled tempers, but it did the opposite as there was constant needle in the match. However, with management making the wise decision of putting John Cronin as the extra man in defence, on the 14th minute Lisgoold were edging in front by four points (one of them being a super point by Cian Healy, 0-6 to 0-2). Aghada did fight back however Jason Hegarty, Kieran Cashman and Cathal Hickey were steady in defence. Lisgoold though continued their purple patch and really began to rack up the scores from the likes of Mark Hegarty, John Cashman and Diarmuid Healy with a wonderful score ensured Lisgoold were ahead by five points on the 25th minute (0-9 to 0-4). The second flashpoint of the half came here when after Aghada raised a white flag a quick pucked out by goalie Jake Wright (who had a fine game) found Johnsey whose long ball released Liam O’Shea. Liam made a surging run into the Aghada 13-yard area as was needlessly pulled back around the neck whatever which the colour of the card given for the foul (It was yellow) one would suspect that penalty would have been awarded but alas it wasn’t and twenty yard free was awarded in which a point was taken. Stunned into action Aghada came back into with the forty-four-year-old O’Neill their shining light as he fielded an endless supply of ball in Aghada’s aid which got them right back in the game. They dragged themselves back into contention of the match and looked back into it especially as Lisgoold hit ten wides in the half. The scoreboard was a lot closer than Lisgoold supporters wish for it to be as a few needless skirmishes started to develop once again with the reiteoir being in command handing out deserved yellow cards on both sides. There was seven minutes of injury time to be had but come the short whistle Lisgoold were just ahead by three points (0-12 to 0-9).

The second half started as the first half finished with both sides slugging it out on the physical stakes and trading points. John Cashman getting an early score in response to Terry and O’Connor points for Aghada who no doubt were boosted by the aid of the breeze that Lisgoold seem to have not taken advantage of it. Aghada went ahead on the 37th minute (0-15 to 0-13) however, curiously whilst Aghada seem to be in pole position at the start of the half they did struggle like Lisgoold to use the wind that was blowing to their advantage (they hit ten wides in the second half, thirteen overall). Having gained the lead there was a danger of them walking away with the game however very soon after we were to raise our first major. On the 39th Minute a ball into Aghada’s corner was caught in a ruck amongst several players it spilled out to James O’Driscoll who went for the direct route and pulled the trigger with a fantastic low shot which nestled into the Aghada net which gave Lisgoold the lead once more. From here on it was a right battle as the match went on it was difficult to know who had fourteen players. Whilst Lisgoold (understandably) held the spare man in defence it was becoming more difficult to see how they could break from Aghada without pouring more effort into attack. Both sides swapped one point each (ours a wonderful score by Tom Savage) before Aghada started to take a hold of the game in the fourth quarter, coming to the final ten minutes of normal time it was 1-14 to 0-17.

The final ten minutes was an excellent spectacle in which we saw some excellent leadership by O’Neill, McCarthy and shooting by Leahy and Terry of Aghada and wonderful Shooting by Cashman and defending by Cronin and Hickey of Lisgoold. Aghada however were slowly increasing the gap between themselves and us. Constant pressure by Aghada ensured they pushed themselves ahead entering injury time it was 1-15 to 0-20 to Aghada. Lisgoold narrowed the gap to a single point in the second minute of injury time, but it seemed to everyone that time and luck was against them as Aghada (who were essentially down to fourteen for well over an hour) looked like they were going to hold out for a deserved win. There was a late (very late) twist in the 64th minute as long-range ball found its way to the Aghada area and our own Diarmuid Healy was the hero of the hour and lashed home from close range. After playing dangerously (and at times poorly) for the duration of the match Lisgoold got their noses in front. Many would think that would be it but there was still incredibly another five minutes to be played after which was enough time for Aghada tack on two points each to Lisgoold’s one (ours by Healy). A blot on the copybook for Lisgoold was when substitute Luke Walsh was red carded, but it seemed more to be clash than anything else. Considering over the hour (or near 80 minutes) that was played there were a lot worse incidents that deserved red, Luke should consider himself a bit unlucky to get his marching orders. Shortly after this the final whistle blew and Lisgoold emerged victorious by the slimmest of margins.

This was a mad game of hurling, with forty-one scores, thirty wides, two red cards incidents aplenty through the whole game. The result was in doubt right up to the final puck and it was hard to know if we would get through it or not. Did Lisgoold deserve the win? – Yes and No.

To start with No, this was a wonderful spirited, dogged Aghada performance which is typical to expect from them. They played with such heart throughout the encounter and even they were a man down seem to at times outfight and outbattle Lisgoold. They were desperately unlucky not to gain a draw (In truth coming the start of injury time we would have taken it given the way the game was going) and with the magnificent individual performance of Pierce O’Neill (especially in the first half) possibly deserved more at the final whistle. In terms of Yes, for the fact even though they played poorly (in short spells) they still found a way through to win the game. That’s a major sign of character and maturity in this team and shows the steel that has been developed within the team especially in the last twelve months. It’s only a matter of time (in one’s opinion) that they will click and produce the consistent, power hurling that we know they can play. Also, the fact we have young fellas able to step up to the plate. Tom savage did fine and contributed with a point and Piaras Fitzpatrick who came on at the start of the second half shows that we have the depth in talent to go further in this championship.

Another viewpoint and one that I felt was overlooked from the events of this game was the performance of John Cronin and John Cashman. While Johnsey may have frustrated many with his gamesmanship at times, what happened the vast majority of the time (and one felt was under appreciated afterwards) was an solid performance of leadership, bravery and determination to ensure we get the victory. Another individual performance that was worth noting was one of John Cashman whose willingness to get stuck into the opposition and shooting ability was of the highest standard. He gave a performance of calmness and maturity which speaks well of character and his talents that ensured we would get the victory – well done to the two Johns.

This was a great result to get and with Aghabullogue dismantling Youghal last Sunday, we go to the final round with a clearer picture of what is needed to go through. On the 2nd of September a win against the Muskerry boys would mean qualification and a shot at a semi-final appearance (depending on other results). A draw, we go to the quarterfinals, a defeat would mean we are reliant on the result of the Aghada vs Youghal game. There is a little bit of comfort knowing now after last Saturdays win that we can’t be sucked into a relegation playoff so that fear has now vanished. Up next for our men is the Junior A Football quarter-final vs Midleton on this Friday night in what will be a welcome break from the Hurling championship. They will do battle Friday night and irrespective of result (hopefully a Lisgoold win) it will be a two week wait before we head onto Caherlag for what should be another hurling championship cracker.

Panel: Jake Wright, Jason Hegarty, Cian Healy, Caomhan O’Sé, Kieran Cashman, Cathal Hickey, John Cronin, Cian Scannell, Diarmuid Healy, Tom Savage, James O’Driscoll, Mark Hegarty, John Cashman, Caolan O’Brien, Liam O’Shea.

State of Play (Correct as of 16th August 2023)

The first team footballers are in the quarter-finals due to played this Friday. The second football team were due to finish off their campaign by playing bride rovers but rovers could not field so its gone back to the board in terms what is next. In the hurling championship after last weekend results we now know a win against Aghabullogue would mean qualification and a shot at a semi-final appearance (depending on other results). A draw, we go to the quarterfinals, a defeat would mean we are reliant on the result of the Aghada vs Youghal game. In the Junior B hurling there are eight team teams qualifying for knock out instead of the usual six. The three group winners, the three runner-up and the third placed teams from Groups 1 & 2 will all qualify for the quarter-finals.

Referees Advisors Course

A referee advisors’ course was held recently in Páirc Uí Chaoimh to enable the advisor to observe, analyse and critic the performance of a referee during a game. The advisor should be able to communicate in a report which is easily understandable and helpful. This will provide referees, their administrators, and appointments committees with useful advice.

East Cork were well represented at the Course as our Runaí Patrick Mulcahy, Vice Chair Dick Fitzgerald, Jerome O’Brien Referees Administrator, Don Hegarty CCC, Ger Sweeney Glenville, Charlie McAllister Midleton.  We could do with some more referees in East Cork and there will be Courses held in Páirc Uí Chaoimh shortly so if your interested now is your time.

The Referee Training Course will take place at two venues in Pairc Ui Chaoimh on September 14th and 21st. The County Referees’ training team will be hosting the event and will equip participants with the necessary skills and knowledge required to officiate matches at various levels. The program is designed to provide an immersive and dynamic learning experience, with seasoned referees and instructors on hand. More information about the course will be shared closer to the time for all who register their interests.

If you’re interested in attending the Referee Training Course, you can register https://gaacork.ie/referees/  to secure your spot.

Early steps have been made in the last few days by the East Cork Divisional Board in relation to re-introducing the Under 21 hurling and football championships to the domestic calendar.  At the Convention last year, the Board made a promise to stage these competitions in 2023 and as it stands no format has been confirmed but matches are likely to begin in October.  However, there are no longer county competitions in this age bracket.
