Youghal and Lisgoold share the points in Castlemartyr

A late fightback from Youghal in Castlemartyr meant that it ended honours even in the round one of the Co-Op Superstores Cork GAA Intermediate A Hurling Championship. Seventeen points a piece.

Having started the brighter of the two teams, Youghal led by 4 points to 3 after nine minutes of play with scores from Brett Moloney (2, one free), Oisin Hill and Devon Donoghue helping Youghal to settle.

When Lisgoold drew level after ten minutes, they dominated the game for a long period.

Lisgoold took a foothold in their halfback line and got some great scores from long range. In fact, they went on to score 9 unanswered points to make it 0-12 to 0-4, with just 3 minutes before halftime. While a couple of those scores will be regarded as unforced errors from a Youghal point of view.

A James Murray free in injury time made it 0-12 to 0-5 at the short whistle and Youghal trailed by 7 at the break.

Similar to the first half, Youghal got off to an encouraging start in the second through a couple of James Murray frees that kept them in touch and put them 5 points adrift.

Three wides from Youghal quickly followed and that made the seaside support feel a little on edge.

Lisgoold responded and both teams exchanged scores to make it 0-15 to 0-8 on the three-quarter mark. One of those, a monster point from fullback, Culann Geary.

Then disaster struck when, just as Youghal were edging their way back into the game, Oisin Hill received a second yellow card and the task ahead became that bit tougher.

The sending off was considered harsh by some on the bank, though they may have been wearing maroon and gold coloured jackets.

The Youghal backline was bolstered by the introduction of Alan Frahill to complement the experience of Nigel Roche and Jonathan Ormond, while the youngsters rarely put a foot wrong. Such was their meanness, the Youghal rear-guard only gave up 2 more points to Lisgoold in the final quarter.

Talisman Bill Cooper, ably assisted by Ciaran O'Mahony, began to get on top in the half forward line, while Devon O'Donoghue took control of the placed balls; landing a side-line, a free and a 65 over the crossbar to bring Youghal right back into the contest.

The Youghal faithful had to hold their collective breaths as Lisgoold stood over a free from a difficult angle for the last puck of the game and a chance to win it for the villagers. Thankfully the ball trailed wide, much to the relief of the seaside’s, no one more relieved than Culann Geary, who (uncharacteristically) slipped as he went to make a tackle on his opponent.

Jack Corcoran's subsequent puckout prompted the fulltime whistle from referee Pa Beausang, who, along with his officials, enabled a sporting contest between both teams.

While the game ended level, the general feeling among the Youghal supporters was that it almost felt like a win, considering the halftime deficit along with the manner of the comeback.

The heart and determination shown from the Youghal men, as they came down the home stretch, was crucial to them taking something from the game.

The response following the sending off will offer great encouragement to players and mentors alike as they go forward into the remainder of the group phase.

Next up is Aghabullogue in Pairc Ui Rinn next Sunday when they will hope to go one better and come away with the win.

Teachtaireacht ón gCathaoirleach

In what was another big week for our club, I’d like to congratulate our U18 Ladies Footballers in winning their league semi-final v Midleton. A great achievement in reaching the league final, but it now means they play in the A county championship which is real sign of progression in Ladies Football in our club.

Well done to all involved!
