Glenville GAA Notes.

U17
It was a busy few days in the U17 age group with the C3 team out on Friday night at home to Kinsale and our first team in championship action at home to Douglas on Sunday evening. The C3 games are proving very useful in giving every one good game time and it is an opportunity to try a few different things as well. We started well with the first point from Jayden, and traded scores throughout the half with a goal from Zach giving us some space before Kinsale pegged it back to come to half time with us a point ahead on a scoreline of 1-4 to 0-6. We had an excellent start to the second half, getting three points in succession but Kinsale upped their game and from the 43rd to 59th minute they scored 8 unanswered points. A late point from Jack brought the final score to 1-8 to 0-14, and although we finished on the wrong side of it, there were plenty positives to take from it, with some super performances around the field. Donnacha was fantastic in goal and is growing into the position and Jayden was again our main scoring threat in the forwards. Team and scorers: D.O’Leary; C.Sheehan, S.Callinan, C.O’Brien; O.Whelan, S.O’Leary, A.O’Reilly; C.Linehan (0-3), S.Curtin; C.Buckley, D.Barry, E.Hartnett; Z.Curtin (1-0), A.Hennessy, J.Henebry (0-4); J.Counihan (0-1), L.Guichard, A.Casey, E.Forde.
Sunday night saw Douglas making the trip out to Glenville for our second game in the group stage of the championship. After losing the first game by a point to St. Colman’s, a win was important to keep our qualification hopes alive, and with a lot of players away on holidays our squad depth was really tested. But, on a damp evening we were very quick out of the blocks, and raced into a five point lead after 15 mins, with Mike and Ryan featuring prominently. Douglas pulled two points back, but we put in an excellent 10 minutes before the break, scoring 1-5 without reply to go in at half time ahead by 1-10 to 0-2, with Shane scoring an excellent 1-1 as part of that. Douglas were always going to come back and indeed they did, and with 13 minutes left the gap was down to 4 points, with Dougla scoring 1-5 without reply after Ciaran had scored the first point of the half. A huge effort in the last 13 minutes was the difference as we steadied the ship, and with Ciaran driving hard through the middle to score an excellent goal and almost a second, a few excellent team points, and a late goal from substitute Eoghan put the icing on the cake as we ran out winners by 3-13 to 1-7. The lads were terrific across the field, with everyone of the 18 contributing on the night, difficult to pick a man of the match, but Cathal and Oscar both were terrific in defence, defending doggedly and getting forward to support the attack as well. It was very satisfying to see the range of scorers as well, with eight players getting their names on the scoresheet. Team and scorers: D.O’Leary; C.Sheehan, S.O’Leary, C.O’Brien; O.Whelan (0-1), B.Ryan, D.Forde; C.Linehan (1-4), S.Curtin (0-1); C.Buckley, R.Loftus (0-2), A.O’Reilly; B.Kelleher (0-2), S.O’Callaghan (1-1), M.O’Riordan (0-2); A.Hennessy, Z.Curtin, E.Forde (1-0).
Next up is the next round of the championship, away to Bride Rovers on August 9th.
U13 Football League
Glenville 0.08
St Michael's 5.07
Glenville U13 footballers came up against a strong St. Michaels side last Friday evening in Glenville. After a tough 1st half we were behind 3.03 to 4pts against a very tricky forward unit from St Michaels.
A spirited 2nd half performance from Glenville kept the game ebbing from end to end. Even though scores were hard to come by, Glenville kept going to the very end, and with a small bit of luck would have been closer at the final whistle. Well done lads
Team. L Ryan, C Kearney, J Sheehan, J McDermott, D O Driscoll, Kallum O Sullivan Fahy, S O Leary, A Magner, D O Mahony, D Cahill, J Forde, A Smith, R O Leary, P O Sullivan, M Counihan, D Murphy, and D Noonan.
Intermediate Championship
Glenville 1-08 Gabriel Rangers 2-12
Our Intermediate team kicked off this year’s Championship in dreadful conditions in Kilmurry on Sunday. Despite this, both teams played some great football on occasions. Glenville got off to a great start with a brace of points from Sean Desmond and a lovely worked team goal, finished with aplomb by Colin O'Keeffe. This meant Glenville lead by 1-2 to 0-1 after six minutes. Unfortunately this was as good as it got for Glenville and the opposition lead by four points at the break. Despite some good play, Glenville never got back into the game and Gabriel Rangers ran out winners by 2-12 to 1-08.
