Lisgoold GAA Notes.
- Jul 27,2023
It was a big weekend for the football championship in Imokilly as the group stages were concluded. It is now fixed that we will play Midleton in the Quarter-Final with the winners playing Aghada for a spot in the Jim Ryan Cup final this will take place on the 20th of August. After defeat to Carrigtwohill the second team face a do or die match this Saturday night with an away game at 7.30pm vs Midleton. Please come out and support the lads.
Imokilly Junior C Football Championship Group C Round 1
Lisgoold 1-7 (10)
Carrigtwohill 4-17 (29)
At Carrigtwohill
July 21st 2023
In what was an open, free-flowing, spirited game of football last Friday night, the second team footballers were outclassed by our neighbours in a comprehensive defeat although admirably Lisgoold gave it a right go in the first half. A rip-roaring start for Carrigtwohill saw gain a penalty in the first minute which was coolly dispatched. The hosts responded brightly with some great teamwork by Dave Barry, Maurice O’Connell and Aidan Power allowed Jamie Browne to raise a white flag. Minutes later we raised a green flag of our own a long ball pumped in by Barry was tapped down by O’Connell to allow Aidan to power through a score a goal. It was 1-1 apiece after ten minutes. Lisgoold gave as good as they got and even though Carrigtwohill seem to have the upper hand Lisgoold refused to buckle. Points and hits were traded until the 22nd minute when Carrigtwohill were awarded another penalty. It was a different take but the same result which meant Carrigtwohill were up by four points (2-2 to 1-3). Both battled to the end of the half and although Carrigtwohill were ahead Lisgoold could be satisfied being only four points down at the half time whistle 1-4 to 2-5.
St Catherines, Ballinacurra, Glanmire and Carrigtwohill from the outset have been viewed as the contenders for the Imokilly Junior C football crown. In the second half, Carrigtwohill demonstrated why with simply a superb performance. A lightening quick start in the second half saw the eventual victors hit over 0-6 without reply. What became hill to climb had suddenly became a mountain. Lisgoold from here on struggled to cope with the constant wave of attacks from Carrigtwohill, although at times we seemed to be outnumbering them on the pitch, Carrig still found scores. The killer blow came in the 47th minute in where a 35-yard free kick somehow managed to catch our goalie off guard and slip into the roof of the net. From here on it was damage limitation although one bright point was an opportunist score from the evergreen Stephen Doyle. Although that was a bright point it was one-way traffic from the end as Carrigtwohill saw out the match to win by a nineteen-point margin.
For progression to the knockout stages everything has been made straightforward. They will face Midleton this Saturday knowing defeat will mean failing to make out of the group stage with a game to spare let’s hope they can do the business this weekend. The best of luck lads we are right behind ye.

Early steps have been made in the last few days by the East Cork Divisional Board in relation to re-introducing the Under 21 hurling and football championships to the domestic calendar. At the Convention last year, the Board made a promise to stage these competitions in 2023 and as it stands no format has been confirmed but matches are likely to begin in October. However, there are no longer county competitions in this age bracket.

Under 11
The U11s had a busy week last week. On Wednesday evening, they were in Killavullen playing the third week of the Summer Football league. On Thursday, they then travelled to Fitzgerald Stadium, Killarney to play the Munster stadium football blitz. In this, they played three games against two Kerry teams, Brosna and Tuosist, and one Limerick team Kileedy. The big stadium suited them, they played fantastic football. After the games, they got a tour of the stadium with Kerry player Joe O Connor. On the way home, we stopped the bus in mcdonald's to finish off a great day out. Finally, on Saturday morning, they played a hurling game against Castlelyons, which was a great game of hurling. Off to Pairc Ui Chaoimh this Saturday 29th July for the final day of the summer football league.
