Lisgoold GAA Notes.

  • Jul 11,2023

A great weekend of action in which we saw the Cork footballers bow out of the all-ireland championship with defeat to Derry. The Juveniles completed a unique treble during the week. To top it off an extraordinary match to place in Midleton as the Footballers just lost to Aghada by the slimmest of margins.

Imokilly JAFC Group Stage Round 2

Lisgoold          2-10 (16)

Aghada            1-14 (17)

At Midleton

July 1st 2023

On the first teams return to clonmult park in Midleton for the first time since capturing Jamesy Kelleher they played the second round of the JAFC vs Aghada (Their second team). Last Saturday evening the gaels of Imokilly were treated to an incredible game of football. A well-known infamous (or famous depending on your viewpoint) Irish politician created an acronym known as GUBU to describe a high-profile case in the summer of 1982. For last Saturday night it is almost the same but for this game we substitute the first word. For the Gaels of Lisgoold the game vs Aghada for gripping, unprecedented, bizarre, unbelievable. That can be the only that would describe in what unfolded in this match.

The ground was in splendid nick and with a stiff breeze blowing in the first half towards the town end, the team in green elected to play with the wind for the first half. It was literally a whirlwind start for Aghada as Ray Savage, Diarmuid Phelan and Dan Leahy were some of the players that played extremely well for Aghada as they soared to an early lead. They raised the first major of the evening as a long ball wasn't dealt with by the full back line and the aforementioned Phelan had room to coast through to bag a three pointer after only four minutes. In fact, it was a bit of pasting as Alan Hogan, Scott Whyte and Ray Savage (who was a constant thorn at the Lisgoold defence in this half) managed to clock up a 1-8 to 0-0 lead after only fifteen minutes. They should have bagged goal number two and three but for the heroics of own Noel O'Driscoll, Jason Hegarty and Keeper Wayne Kingston (who played magnificent over the hour) prevented them from going further ahead. We had only two reasonable chances in this period a missed free from John Cashman and long distance shot from our captain Shaun but neither provided any joy. It was on the 20th minute that this game started to take a turn. Aghada very curiously elected to be more defensive although it was quite unnecessary for them considering the position, they were in, but this allowed Lisgoold room to breathe and eventually got our first score.

Some great work by Tom Savage, Cathal Hickey and Cathal Cashman engineered an opportunity for John Cashman who duly slotted over to register Lisgoold’s first score (on the 22nd minute). This seemed to have woken the team (and management) from their slumber and incredibly in the space of three minutes closed the gap from ten to three. A wonderful team move, started with Diarmuid Healy and Kieran Cashman ended up with the industrious Hickey setting up Caolan O'Brien whose salmon like leap out reached the keeper to get goal number one in the 24th minute. This was followed up quickly by a careless mistake by the Aghada keeper which O'Brien and expertly dispatched to raise the green flag once more. Following a Cashman free this meant it was Aghada's turn to be shellshocked as Lisgoold who were pretty much stagnant until then to be within three points of the men in green. However, this meant it was game on as the passionate Lisgoold support got behind our men as they fought back. Scores were traded and with Luke Walsh, Cian Scanell and Mark Hegarty stepping it up in performance we knew Lisgoold were back in the game. The short whistle blew, and an astonishing half was bought to close by Pa Beasuang of Midleton with Aghada leading by three points (2-4 to 1-10).

The second half started as Lisgoold finished with constant pressure, patient play and a steely determination which meant they played wonderfully. Within ten minutes thanks to some great teamwork allowed Cashman (free and from play) and Mark Hegarty with a superb score to draw level. So even though after twenty-one minutes being eleven points down they had gained parity (2-7 to 1-10) - it was excellent stuff. From here on it was a right dogfight with neither side willing to give an inch. Phelan from Aghada and Cashman (John) from Lisgoold were the beacons for both teams as Lisgoold sought to edge ahead but Aghada refusing to buckle. This gripping encounter developed with Cashman popping scores for Lisgoold, with Leahy and Phelan doing the damage for Aghada.

Both sides had ample chances to get ahead with Aghada the more guilty of not punishing mistakes in the Lisgoold defence that led to several chances in the last twenty minutes. Entering injury time, it was 2-10 to 1-14 to Aghada as Lisgoold piled on the pressure. We had one last opportunity awarded by Pa Beausang (who did well in fairness to him) to equalize unfortunately John Cashman was unable to convert and we ended up on the wrong side of a one-point defeat.

This was incredible match which showed our lads true potential once they focused at the task at hand. In terms of progression the result actually turned out to be irrelevant due to Cloyne’s win over Glenbower on the same night meant Lisgoold irrespective of the Cashman free going over or not would still have to get a result (draw or win) over Cloyne. However what can be taken out of it is a wonderful performance by the blue and gold (well the last 40 minutes of the game anyway) in which Aghada on mature reflection for the first twenty minutes deserved their but for the rest of the game their performance would be only deemed mediocre at best. Due to Lisgoold hunger, desire and determination - Aghada were seen to be clinging on at the finish and were fortunate to gain the victory. There is plenty of forward momentum for our men as they take on Cloyne in Carrigtwohill on July 7th. We wish them the very best as they go into battle to make the quarter-finals of the Jim Ryan Cup.

Also, another point of view that has to be made, whilst there has been a lot of criticism of the split season one can only wish that those were to witness what was produced last Saturday night. It was a wonderful spectacle of championship football played during the summer (as it should always be) and was an example of when the club player is respected and provided a platform to perform in favourable conditions that they can provide spectacles just as good as their intercounty counterparts. So, kudos to the Imokilly and Cork county board for giving this window for the club player. Also, kudos to the men of Lisgoold and Aghada for providing a great hour of entertainment for the price of a coffee and scone. So, for now our men just need to rest, recover and prepare for a right battle against Cloyne as it is essentially a knockout match with a quarter-final place at stake. Best of luck to players and management on Friday night we are right behind ye.

U14 East Football Final

Lisgoold          4-10 (22)

Passage           6-13 (31)

At Lisgoold

June 27th 2023

A spell binding final last week – saw the football lose out to a very well drilled and trained Passage team. It was simply a breath-taking encounter with scores flowing end to end and which ended up going to the hosts which destroyed the quadruple dream. There was no shame in defeat as to be fair the better side won however it has been a wonderful year for the Under 14’s they have another final just around the corner next week for them. We hope it will end in treble glory. Best of Luck lads.  No matter what happens next week we are very proud of ye.

U14 East Hurling Final

Lisgoold          2-7 (13)

Aghada            2-6 (12)

At Lisgoold

July 4th 2023

In a nail-biting final last night, Congrats to the U14 hurlers on a very impressive hard-fought win tonight. Finals are there to be won and they did that. Some great wins and tackles from all the backs and keeper were the difference on the night, they held Aghada to a single point in the second half. Must not forget to mention an ice-cold free taker when the pressure was on!!Great way to finish off the u14 season. With the backs and goalie playing out of their skins under all sorts of pressure held there men out – and Lisgoold won out and lifted the cup. It was wonderful team performance and well done to everyone.

A significant in which they won their third trophy in a few short weeks. A treble is a fantastic achievement and echoes back to another bunch of U14’s who achieved this feat in 1999. Coached by Pat Clifford and William O’Brien that crop produced another memorable season with the likes of Brian Clifford, Barry Stack, Ciarán Cronin, William Ryan, Patrick O’Mahony, Moss Mulcahy, Charles Smart to name a few went on to achieve great success in their future careers with Lisgoold and some even went on to wear the blood and bandage!! Congrats once again to the 2023 crop who to be fair did one step better and managed to appear in all four finals but as per result last week just fell short of a quadruple. However, three trophies is some going, that will do lads – that will do.

Results

Congrats to U15 hurlers on a comprehensive victory over Nemo Rangers last Sunday morning. On Saturday June 30th our u11 panel played a game in both codes v Fr O Neills in Lisgoold. Playing on a big pitch, learning to mark their man 1v1 with one of our Young Whistler's refereeing keeping both sides honest is a great experience for the lads as they make their way from the days mini blitz on to proper games and matches. The Super Smallies (U9 10 11s) all played a series of games last Wednesday evening in Lisgoold against Carrignavar, A big word thanks to the three young whistler's from the club for helping the games flow while also letting the coaches get on with their jobs of mentoring their age groups. All three games were highly competitive and great to see the Lisgoold gang putting their new skills in to action on the Pitch. It looks like a bright future lies ahead.

GAA to trial alternative hurling handpass Rule.

The GAA will trial an alternative rule relating to the Handpass in hurling for the forthcoming Higher Education Freshers 1 hurling competition later this year.  This is the result of a close examination of the unlawful use of the handpass in hurling by the Standing Committee on Playing Rules.  The result of the proposed rial will be interesting and hopefully will enhance the game.
