Weekly lotto draw now has €15,000 jackpot (Notes 29.6.23)

One intriguing aspect from last Monday mornings draw is the possibility of three Ulster teams making the semi-finals of the All Ireland Senior Football Championship. Realistically you couldn’t argue with that. Being the most competitive province after all. We will of course have an All-Northern Minor Final Derry v Monaghan. All Ireland Senior Hurling Semi-finals are now a repeat of last year’s pairings Galway v Limerick on Saturday evening July 8th at 6.00pm. Twenty-two hours later Clare play Kilkenny at 4.00pm on Sunday evening July 9th. Both matches will be played at Croke Park. Well where’s the intelligent money going now?

Club action from the field of play

Round nine division four Red FM sponsored County Hurling League

Milford 2-12 St Catherines 2-14

A more than satisfactory result for the Saints. Preserving their division four status from this round nine and final group game from the division four county hurling league champaign when played at a humid and overcast Milford at 6.15pm on Saturday evening last.

Making the most auspicious of starts Kevin Barry assured and delightfully picking his spot for the Saints and the game’s first goal on four minutes. Sean O’Donoghue added a few points. Before ace free taker Henry O’Gorman was able to pick out the ever dangerous Brian Murphy for the equalising goal with parity restored for the first and only time on a 1-04 each scoreline to seventeen minutes. Catherines reply was swift and instant. Kevin Barry again the man on target as the visitors found themselves ahead on a half time scoreline standing at 2-07 to 1-06.

Eoin Davis has a vital role to play. His striking from distance is frequently accurate and after pointing the final score of the opening half was quickly on target on the resumption again from a placed ball. Anthony Watson and Eoin Dillon figured prominently for the home team. As points from Matthew Mulcahy and Daniel Mangan turn helped maintain the status quo at 2-11 to 1-09 to the end of the third quarter. It was probably Brian Villiers making for an uncomfortable finish. A goal of fifty minutes trimming it to a one point match.

Thankfully the Saints withstood understandable late pressure. Two pointed frees preceding a Daniel Mangan point about four minutes overtime and victory was confirmed for the Saints on an end scoreline of 2-14 to 2-12.

Scorers – K. Barry (2-01), S. O’Donoghue (0-04 frees) (0-05), M. Mulcahy and E. Davis (frees) (0-03 each) and D. Mangan (0-02).

St. Catherine’s team: E. Davis, F. O’Connell, E. Wallace, K. Neville, O. Fitzgerald, C Hegarty, K. ODonoghue, B. O’Brien, D. Morrison, R. Galvin, S. O’Donoghue,  D. Mangan, M. Mulcahy, K. Barry, W. Leamy. Subs: E. Condon and S. Cotter for W. Leamy and D. Morrison (both 40’s)

P. Keane for K. Neville (49’), A. Neville for K. O’Donoghue (55’).

Previous County Junior ‘B’ Football Championship semi-finals

Now that the group stages in Division Four of the County Hurling League are over and attention quickly transfers itself to the last four of what is the Bon Secours sponsored  confined County Junior ‘B’ Football Championship. St. Catherine’s will play their third semi-final in thirteen years this forthcoming weekend. Opposition provided by Ballyphehane.

A brief look back on the previous two with Kilbrin making the perfect start in Ballyhooly on Monday evening last August 9th 2010. Ahead through an Adi Nash goal from a penalty kick inside sixty seconds.  A lead stretching to 1-06 to 0-02 midway through the second quarter. Response forthcoming in the form of points finished off by Billy Carr and Laurence O’Connor as a Damien Farrell free off a Padraig O’Connor touch finished up in the net. Reducing the deficit somewhat, joy short-lived with Liam Daly adding a second opposition goal just before the break. Kilbrien ahead on a half-time, scoreline standing at 2-06 to 1-04. Exquisite points by Tim O’Connor and William Egan exchanged quickly on the change of ends. It was 2-08 to 1-08 at the end of the third quarter. Sadly a well struck Ed Kenneally goal providing a score of a consolation nature coming as it did on sixty one minutes. Kilbrin winners and advancing to the decider on an end 2-10 to 2-08 scoreline.

Diarmuid O Mathúnas making the livelier start in Kilmurry on Saturday evening August 4th 2012. Ahead at 0-06 to 0-01 just beyond the opening quarter when Eoin Condon pounced for the equalising gaol on 27 minutes. Parity restored for a second time on a 1-03 to 0-06 interval scoreline. John Paul O’Callaghan very effective for the mid Cork team now ahead at 0-10 to 1-04 to 43 minutes Points from Shane Kearney and an Allan Carr free further clawed back the deficit. But that was as close as it would get. Kilmurry go on finishing up at 0-10 to 1-06. Hopefully the show goes well this time.

Team v Kilbrin – 2010: Colm Molloy, Noel Kielthy, John Casey, Stephen O’Brien, James Casey, Ed Kenneally, John Mulcahy, Allan Carr, Damien Farrell, Billy Carr, Padraig O’Connor, Tim O’Connor, Liam O’Connor, Laurence O’Connor (captain), Paul Higgins. Subs used were: Patrick Roche, Shane Cotter and Paul O’Donovan.

Team v Diarmuid O Mathúnas -2012: Colm Molloy, Ed Kenneally, Shane Fitzgerald, John Mulcahy, Stephen O’Brien, Liam O’Connor (team captain), James Neville, Conor Hegarty, Allan Carr, Padraig O’Connor, Shane Kearney, William Walsh, Padraig Noonan, Shane Cotter and Eoin Condon. Subs used were: Marty Conneely and Mathew Mulcahy.

Condolences

During the week we were made aware of the passing of Tom Flynn, Conna, panellist of the historic winning year of 1957, who may have well played against Tracton in the ill-fated County Junior ‘A’ Hurling Championship quarter-final played  at the end of September of that year. Our sympathy to family members. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a h-anam dhílis.

Juvenile section starts with semi-final Div 1 Rebel Og East U14 Hurling Championship

Watergrasshill 6-09 St Catherine’s 6-08

How does it go again?... You win some!.... Well sadly not on this occasion. In recent times what stunning entertainment has been provided by and involved this young squad of players. From that mind boggling resurrection below in Cloyne. Before tasting a narrow loss to Glenville in the equivalent football competition on just seven nights previous. Defeat inflicted by sister club when the semi-final of the divisional U14 Hurling Championship went ahead at an overcast Watergrasshill just after 7pm on Friday evening last. In so doing reversing the result from last season’s equally exciting decider played in Ballinacurra.

Surrendering their title in the process. Tadhg McCarthy sluiced his way through the heart of the Saints defence. Goaling in the game’s opening attack inside thirty seconds. In all bagging 2-03 on a half time lead standing at 2-06 to 2-04 against a recovering Saints. Again rocked with a concession of a two goal strike inside two minutes of the change of ends. But there would be no lying down. No surrender. This team reveals in the face of adversity. Greatly benefiting from a few positional switches and if anything would become the dominant force in the ensuing passages of play. Two Tadgh Walsh goals, three minutes apart thus competing a hat trick had the Saints upside their opponents. There were a few scores from the nippy Matthew Counihan in between. But momentum was with the Saints. A Sean Walsh pointed free after Alan Cotter had been fouled, levelled it up. Taking the lead for the first time, with the cheekiest of Ronan O’Donoghue finishes. 5-08 to 4-08 to fifty minutes. It was another sub Cormac McCarthy responding for the hill. Levelling it up again before Tomás Morrison whipped the breaking ball to the net for the lead goal once more. A score so reminiscent of his winning score from the thirteen league game between the teams at the same venue last playing season. Now standing at 6-08 to 5-08 in Catherines favour. 57 minutes on the clock. But Tadgh McCarthy finished as he started with the winning scores and now play Kiltha Óg in next week’s final.

Scorers: T. Walsh (3-00), A. Cotter (1-0, ‘65), (0-01 free), (1-04), S. Walsh (0-03 frees) (0-04), R O’Donoghue and T. Morrison (1-00 each).

Watergrasshill scorers: T McCarthy (1-01 frees) (4-05), M. Counihan (1-03), C McCarthy (1-00) and G. Fitzgerald (0-01).

St. Catherines team: Sean O’Keeffe, Cillian McCarthy, Eoghan O’Mahony (team captain), Sean Moore, Cathal Higgins, Sean Walsh, Shay McCarthy, Alan Cotter, Shane Riordan, Eoin Dillon, Tadgh Walsh, Tomás Morrison, Billy O’Connor, Ronan Hickey and Aodhán Burke. Subs: Ronan O’Donoghue for Aodhán Burke (39’), Noah Keane for Eoin Dillon (44’). Also: Jack Cunneen, David Temple and Jack Coughlan.

Referee: David Butler (Carrigtowhill).

Round Three Division 1 Rebel Óg East U17 Hurling League

St. Catherine’s 1-24 Blackrock 1-12

“Chips” Murphy pointed them on the way in the very first attack inside thirty seconds following the initial throw in. Adam O’Callaghan scored one, involvement in another with parity restored for the first and only time at 0-02 each to eight minutes of this under seventeen hurling league tie, when played in occasionally showery Ballynoe on Wednesday evening, June 21st last.

Strong defensive play with Gearóid O’Callaghan McCarthy and Cian McCarthy closing ranks at the back behind Timmy Barry and Diarmuid O’Donovan surging forward in an attacking half line. Evan O’Driscoll virtually waiting until very close to the finish before pointing the score of the hour. Around the middle there was the hard work of Conor Hayes and the unerring accuracy of Diarmuid O’Connell and eight unanswered points followed with the Saints ahead on a half time scoreline now standing at 0-14 to 0-04.

Slight hints of indiscipline creeping in quickly on the change of ends. Four points without reply off Brian Lynch frees marginally eating into the deficit. But response to the rockies goal was swift and eventually match defining. John Temple picking out substitute Cillian Hickey. Finishing with Aplomb on 52 minutes. Team captain Pietropaolo pointed straight away.

Victory assured for the Saints who by the time you read these words should have played a football league semi-final against either St. Colman’s, Kiltha Óg or Mayfield. Keep it going lads.

Scorers: D. O’Connell (0-11 frees) (0-01 “65”) (0-12), J. Temple (0-04), C. Hickey (1-00),

C. Pietropaolo (0-03), D. Murphy, G. Sheehan, A. Bryan, C. Leamy and E. O’Driscoll (0-01 each).

St. Catherine’s team: J. Bryan, G. O’Callghan McCarthy, C. McCarthy, C. Dunning, T. Barry, E. O’Driscoll, D. O’Donovan D. O’Connell, C. Hayes, D. Murphy, C. Pietropaolo (team captain), C. Leamy, A. Bryan, J. Temple, G. Sheehan. Subs: C. Hickey for A. Bryan (Second Half), T. Clancy for C. Leamy (48’), K O’Donoghue for C. Hayes (53’), S. Aherne for G. O’Callaghan McCarthy (59’), T. Dee for G. Sheehan (60+1’). Also: J Pietropaolo for J. Hickey.

Referee: Anthony O’Regan (Youghal).

Group 2 Round 4 Rebel Óg North U12 Hurling League

St. Catherine’s 2-06 Na Piarsaigh 3-07

Down came the curtains on the initial part of the competitive year for these players when this round four under twelve hurling league tie went ahead at a sunny albeit blustery Ballynoe on Monday evening June 19th last.

Cian Fitzgerald, Tadgh Shields and in particular David Temple at full back where defensively solid in front of reliable keeper and captain for the evening Padraig O’Sullivan. Helping the home team to bed their way in, points from Noah Keane and Sean O’Keeffe had come when a Sean Moore delivery ended up in the net. Impact somewhat diminished when Edward Kendellan goaled. In reply leaving it 1-06 to 1-03 in favour of the Saints outfit playing with a stiffish breeze to their backs at the end of the opening what are twenty five minute halves.

Both teams struggled on the change of ends. Na Piarsaigh eventually reaping the benefit of the prevailing conditions. With an Evan Power goal to which the skilful Darragh O’Driscoll quickly added a well worked point. Joe O’Leary scored the third goal. Sadly for the Saints a sweetly struck Olan Sheehan goal proved just a consolation score. Phase two of these leagues come up in a few weeks.

Scorers: S. O’Keeffe (0-02 frees) (0-05), S. Moore and O. Sheehan (1-00 each) and N. Keane (0-01).

St. Catherine’s team: P. O’Sullivan (capt), C. Fitzgerald, D. Temple, T. Shiels, J. Mulkerrins S. Moore, Z. Pyne, G. Leahy, N. Keane, A. O’Gorman, S. O’Keeffe, J. Kearney, J. Bryan, A. O’Connor, B. Coakley. Also: O Sheehan and A. Coakley for J. Bryan, A. O’Connor and T. Shiels (all second half).

Referee: Brendan Noonan (Fermoy).

Match Reports

Quarter-final Bon Secours Sponsored Confined County Junior ‘B’ FC

Shanballymore 1-07 St Catherine’s 1-09

Having been able to build up a daunting five point lead, St. Catherines had to withstand ferocious Shanballymore pressure before booking a place in the penultimate round when this confined County Junior ‘B’ Football Championship tie was played at an overcast and humid Castletownroche on Friday evening last.

Little or nothing was separating two evenly matched teams together on four occasions including 0-04 each to twenty minutes. With the Saints having the edge from there to the sound of the half whistle. Oisin Fitzgerald easing them back in front. Also involved as Kian O’Donoghue pointed another. Following a foul on Sean O’Donoghue it was Kyle Wallace on target with the resultant free. Making it 0-07 to 0-04 at half time.

An ominous Eoin Wallace run through the heart of the opposition defence released Eoin Condon, surging through to crash home the all important Saints goal seven minutes into the second half. Both teams introducing a welter of substitutes with the score board not being troubled. Reignited with Eoin McHugh pointing his third score of the hour. Before 5th replacement Dion Roberts with a vital touch secured the opposition goal. Margin trimmed to the minimum. Fifty-five minutes elapsed. Pressure continuing to mount before in a breakaway attack, the pacy William Leamy picked out substitute Darragh Morrison for the insurance point four minutes over time.

Scorers – E Condon (1-02), K Wallace (0-01 free; 0-03), K O’Donoghue (0-02), O Fitzgerald and D Morrison (0-01 each).

Shanballymore scorers – D. Roberts (1-00), E McHugh (0-03), B O’Reilly, E O’Regan, B. O’Grady and D. Palmer (free) (0-01 each).

St. Catherines team: E Davis, C McAuliffe, E Kenneally, K Neville, E Wallace, L O’Connor, W Leamy, O Fitzgerald, A Neville, K O’Donoghue, P Keane, K Barry, K Wallace, S O’Donoghue and E Condon. Subs: D Morrison for A Neville (41’), J Hayes for K O’Donoghue (49’), R Clancy for K Barry (52’), S Cogan for P Keane (60+3’).

Referee was John Hartnett (Boherbue).

St. Catherine’s/Shanballymore – not much history

Overall grading and divisional boundaries would have meant no great rivalry exists between St. Catherine’s and Shanballymore. That said they did meet in a County Junior ‘A’ Hurling League semi-final on the morning of Sunday, October 23rd, 2016. Match played in Castlelyons.

Catherine’s had the opening three scores of the contest to eight minutes. Jamie Sheedy was good on the frees and Colman O’Reilly with their opening score from play saw Shanballymore level for the first and only time at 0-04 each to the end of the opening quarter. Catherines gaining control. Brian Mulcahy releasing Daniel Mangan to goal from close range. Repaying the complement with Mulcahy finishing off a second goal making it 2-06 to 0-04 to twenty five minutes and 2-07 to 0-05 by half-time.

Six points were shared through the opening ten minutes of the turnover. Goals from Michael “Haulie” Burke and Darren Roche were making it awkward for the Saints. Now ahead on a 2-12 to 2-08 scoreline to fifty minutes. Strong Conor Hegarty defending allied to the accuracy of Shane O’Brien from placed balls edged the Saints over the winning line on an end 2-15 to 2-10 scoreline.

Referee was Michael Sheehan of Liscarroll. Ex Catherine’s Juvenile Secretary Imelda O’Connell (Fouhy) is a native of Shanballymore. As is Fr. Billy O’Donovan PP.

Scorers – S O’Brien (0-08 frees), D Mangan and B Mulcahy (1-03 each) and E Condon (0-01 each). Shanballymore scorers were J Sheedy, (0-06), M Burke (1-02), D Roche (1-01) and C O’Reilly (0-01).

St. Catherines team: Ed Ahern, Ed Kenneally, Conor Hegarty, Kieran Neville, Stephen O’Brien, Ronan Clancy, Shane O’Regan, Eoin Condon, James Neville, Rory Galvin, Brian Mulcahy, Shane O’Brien, Shane Walsh, Daniel Mangan, John Casey. Also, John Mulcahy and Kevin Mangan.

Juvenile Section starts with Rd 1 Division 1 Rebel Og East U14 Hurling Championship

St. Colman’s 4-10 St Catherines 2-17

Just 24 hours short of the 12 months elapsing since last year’s striking final against Watergrasshill at Ballinacurra and we are served up an equally fascinating opening defence of their title. A round one U14 Hurling Championship tie with the sun going ahide making for slightly cooler conditions – thus surely benefiting both teams when played in Cloyne on Wednesday evening June 14th last.

St. Catherines’ pouncing for the first three scores inside the opening four minutes. But taller stronger opposition, a combination of Russell Rovers and Cloyne and two-point winners of the League tie between the same two teams when played in Ballynoe just seven weeks previous gradually assumed control. Good in the air, first to the ball providing ideal space all over the place. Daniel O’Brien, Artan Iliukovic and Lucas Zanda pick of the first half scorers. At the end of which St. Colman’s were ahead on a half-time scoreline standing at 4-09 to 1-07.

No roaring, no shouting, no gnashing of teeth. Just an appeal to up it, work harder and see what emerges from a second half quickly benefiting from reshuffles here and there. It was like starting all over again, with the introduction of Billy O’Connor especially significant. Strong, great work rate, no fears, Billy making an impression where previously the Saints couldn’t. Five points were added to the tally, four from Alan Cotter, three from placed balls in the opening exchanges. At the back any fears of Sean O’Keeffe dealing with the full sized posts were quickly dispelled. Ice cool Eoghan O’Mahony and Sean Moore defending like never before. That ball is going out would be the easy to understand motto.

But it was the goal ground stroked to the net first time by Ronan Hickey telegraphed that the comeback was on. Almost the kind of goal rarely witnessed now. Think of John Fitzgibbon from a previous era and you quickly get the picture. Shane Riordan getting better everyday, he togs out quickly added his second point shortly afterwards. Thus making it 4-09 to 2-13 to forty one minutes. Game now definitely on.

More use of the bench, Kenneth O’Connell, so young, so quick, coolness beyond his years, has the temperament to slot another score keeping the momentum going. Sean Walsh points a free from the equaliser at 4-09 to 2-15 to fifty four minutes. Level for the first time since just eight minutes in. Repeating the dose just two minutes later. Catherine’s now ahead. It seemed scarcely credible going back just half an hour. What excitement. What tension. How would this belter of a championship match end?

Daire Collins levels it up again from a pointed free. Colman’s only second half score on fifty eight minutes. Remarkable. At least the ball is now in the right place and taking a Ronan Hickey handpass, Tadgh Walsh splits the posts for the match winning point a minute overtime. There’s another twist to the tail. But St. Colman’s must have miscalculated the implications of a very late free awarded. Going for goal. Blocked down, duly cleared. Tension gives was to elation. We live for days like this.

Scorers – A. Cotter (0-07 frees) (0-09), R Hickey (2-01), S Walsh (0-03 frees), S Riordan (0-02), K O’Connell and T Walsh (0-01 each).

St. Catherine’s team – S O’Keeffe, C McCarthy, E O’Mahony, S Moore, C Higgins, S Walsh, S McCarthy, A Cotter, K O’Connell, S Riordan, T Walsh, E Dillon, J Cunneen, R Hickey, T Morrisson. Subs – B O’Connor for E Dillon (second half), A Burke and R O’Donoghue for  Cunneen and T Morrison (Bboth 53’). Also: D Temple, N Curtin, J Coughlan and N Keane. Team captain was E O’Mahony.

Referee: Arthur Murphy (Killeagh).

Round 2 Division 1 Rebel Og East U14 Football Championship

Glenville 4-10  St Catherine’s 3-08

48 hours later the Saints returned to the ring in the equivalent football championship semi-final played in Glenville. Running concurrent with the afore mentioned County match in Castletownroche on a night when the Saints were involved in three competitive fixtures simultaneously. Doing well too to lead on a half-time scoreline standing at 2-05 to 1-04.

But not being able to see it out with their full quantity of players allied to the influence of the very good Tadgh McCarthy saw Glenville advance by a five point margin – maybe the proximity of the two games played its part.

But the Saints can feel well pleased with their honest efforts and commitment over both matches. On nights when some indifferent league form was left behind. Take note that U13 leagues are coming up.

Scorers – R Hickey (1-00 penalty; 2-00), T. Walsh (0-04 frees; 0-05), A Burke (1-00), A Cotter, S Walsh and E Dillon (0-01 each).

St. Catherines team: J Cunneen, C. McCarthy, S. McCarthy (team captain), N. Keane, C. Higgins, B. O’Connor, S. Riordan, A. Cotter, S. Walsh, T. Walsh, R. Hickey, E. Dillon, A. Burke, E. O’Mahony, T. Morrison. Subs: K. O’Connell for C McCarthy. S. Moore for E. Dillon, R. O’Donoghue for A. Burke. N. Curtin for T. Morrison. Also S. Earley, J. Coughlan, A. O’Gorman, D. Temple, S. O’Keeffe.

Round 4 Division 2 Rebel Og East

U17 Football League

St. Catherine’s 2-09 Carrigtwohill 2-07

Third leg of Friday evenings triumvirate saw the Saints keep their thus far unbeaten run going with a narrow win over Carrigtwohill in this Round Four U17 Football League tie played in Ballynoe at 7.30pm. Goals from Diarmuid O’Connell and Timmy Barry at opposite ends of the opening half helping the home based team to an interval advantage on a 2-03 to 0-02 scoreline.

Carrigtwohill rallied and were upsides their opponents into the fourth quarter. Late Cian McCarthy and Conor Hayes points guided the Saints over the victory line. Just a reminder that last Sunday’s proposed U16 Hurling League tie scheduled for Church Road didn’t go ahead.

Scorers – C. Pietropaolo (0-05), D. O’Connell (0-01 free; 1-01), T. Barry (1-00), C. McCarthy (0-02) and C. Hayes (0-01).

St. Catherine’s team: T. Dee, G. O’ Callaghan McCarthy, D. O’Donovan, A. Bryan, D. Murphy, E. O’Driscoll, T. Barry, C. McCarthy, C. Hayes, J. Bryan, D. O’Connell, G. Sheehan, C. Hickey, C Pietropaolo, J. Hickey. Subs: K. O’Donoghue for J. Hickey (40’), C. Murray for A. Bryan (49’), J. Pietropaolo for J. Bryan (50’s), S. Ahern for G. O’Callaghan McCarthy (50’), J. National Scene

Well the preliminaries are over, results as expected and we can settle down now to two tasty quarter finals in the All Ireland Senior hurling championships. In this kind of in-house battle of the provinces, are we looking at an upcoming Munster double thus guaranteeing three of the last four places as the quest for Liam MacCarthy ever intensifies. Bringing back memories and sandwiched between the weather and traffic reports came the upcoming football draws live on RTE Radio One on Monday morning last just after 8.30am.

After a terrific and well earned success over a fancied Mayo, Cork now with a home draw again face western opposition. They play Roscommon in the preliminary quarter-final of the All-Ireland and Senior Football Championship at Pairc Ui Chaoimh this forth coming weekend. Frequently mentioned as prospective winners, but in the next few days one of them will be going out of the whole damn thing. Mayo v Galway will now be billed at the glamour tie of the round. Three combined defeats attained thus far between the two counties. How big a loss will the beaten team be?

We opt for a Down/Meath Tailteann Cup final pairing. Back to the grassroots and Bride Rovers had a win over Castlemartyr in the East Cork Junior ‘A’ Football Championship when played in Ballynoe at 6.30pm on Sunday evening last. Mike Walsh was the referee. Youghal and Midleton are the other teams in Group One. Also down for Pairc Naomh Caitriona is the pairing of the Castlelyons and Dungourney in the Divisional Junior ‘B’ Football Championship. Pencilled in for Friday, June 30th at 7.30pm.

U15 Hurling and Football Championship Draws

Having been analysing the under seventeen version since last with you, so this time around it’s the turn of the under fifteen age group. Both codes are spread over a thirty-five day period. A round robin organised competition. St. Catherines will be at home to St. Colmans commencing their Division One under fifteen Rebel Og East Hurling championship. Down for Monday July 3rd, footballers taking part in Division Two East for Championship. Starting out up in Lisgoold on July 10th, then its every second week from there on in, with the hurlers going to Youghal on Monday, July 17th.

One week later Cobh are Football championship visitors on Monday, July 24th. Finishing up hurling above in Watergrasshill on July 31st. Likewise the football preliminaries conclude on August 7th above in Farranree v St. Vincents.

By then the picture will be clear re making the knockout stages of the respective competitions.

Mixed fortunes in hurling leagues (Notes 15.6.23)

Last in first out as the cliché goes. Limerick retain their Munster title and earn an automatic last four place. You feel that would be the way for the Shannonsiders to go. Quest for the four-in-a row of All-Ireland senior hurling titles gathers further momentum. Kilkenny coming through in Leinster. But left it late. Very late. Now it feels like it’s starting afresh. Preliminary quarter finals shape up on Saturday coming. Carlow v Dublin. Presumably winners to face Clare. It’s also Offaly v Tipperary. Looking like Galway waiting in the wings. There is still a lot of hurling to be played. There is still the possibility of a repeat pairing involving Clare and Limerick.

Cork play Mayo in round 3 pool A of the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship in Limerick also this weekend. While Monaghan, Derry, Kerry and Dublin are the last four in the Minor Championship. Into the business end now for sure.

Club action from the field of play

Round 8 division 4 Red FM County Hurling League

St Catherines 0-15 Ballinhassig 0-16

Points from Kevin Barry and Daniel Mangan allied to a humongous strike from county keeper Patrick Collins were the early influential scores in a contest tightening up considerably as time wore on. Two evenly matched teams together for a third time on a half time scoreline standing at 0-08 apiece when this round 8 tie went ahead in dull, overcast conditions at Ballynoe on Saturday evening last.

It was the free taking of Sean O’Donoghue and Eoin Davis that briefly ushered the Saints to a three-point lead on a 0-13 to 0-10 scoreline to the end of the third quarter. Denis O’Donovan struck two well take opposition points as the free taking of Brian Lynch helped secure a narrow Ballinhassig win at the finish. Round 9 and final group game in the competition will be held in Milford next weekend. In what’s been a sad week in the county and as with the junior match in Youghal three nights previously, a minute’s silence was observed prior to throw-in and held in the memory of the late, legendary Teddy McCarthy who sadly passed away suddenly during the week.

Scorers: S O’Donoghue (0-06 frees), E Davis (0-05 frees) K Barry (0-02), D Mangan and B Mulcahy (0-01 each). Ballinhassig scorers: B Lynch (0-05 frees) (0-07), A O’Sullivan (0-01 free) (0-04), D O’Donovan (0-02), P Collins, C Grainger and M Collins (0-01 each).

St Catherine’s team: E Davis, L O’Connor, E Wallace, P Keane, K O’Donoghue, O Fitzgerald, K Neville, B O’Brien, D Mangan, R Galvin, B Mulcahy, S O’Donoghue, K Wallace, K Barry, W Leamy. Round 7 division 2 East Cork Junior Hurling League

Youghal 1-15 St Catherines 6-23

St Catherines were completing their campaign with a convincing victory from this round seven league tie played in sunny Copper Alley grounds on Wednesday evening, June 7th last.

Kian O’Donoghue set the ball rolling with a litany of points both from frees and open play and with Evan Philpott bulging the net on four occasions broken down as two in each half lead to a half time scoreline standing at 3-12 to 0-06.

Youghal enjoyed their most lucrative period with five unanswered third quarter points, including three from Cian Coleman Butler and a few more from their best player Dion O’Donoghue, with the score standing at 4-14 to 0-11 to forty-five minutes and beyond. Late scores with Richard Galvin, Ronan Clancy Will Leamy and Richard O’Connell all hitting the target rounded off what was an emphatic win.

Scorers: E Philpott (4-00), K O’Donoghue (0-05 frees) (0-01 ’65) (0-08), R Galvin (1-03), R O’Connell (1-02), R Clancy (0-04), B O’Brien (0-03), W Leamy (0-02) and A Neville (0-01).

Round 2 division 1 Rebel Óg East U17 Hurling League

St Colmans 3-15 St Catherines 4-10

A virtual re-enactment of GroundhÓg Day as the Saints are again denied by a late, late goal as they were in the U16 Championship tie between the same two clubs in Ballynoe on the fourth Sunday morning of October last season. This U17 hurling league tie played in sunny yet deceptively breezy conditions in Cloyne on bank holiday Monday morning, June 5th.

Adam Lee had the first goal and opening score of the match for the home-based team on seven minutes. Parity restored twice in the ensuing exchanges. Including a 1-02 to 0-05 and again together at 1-03 to 0-06 following a David Crotty score on 23 minutes. When a probing delivery was flashed to the net by an agile, focused, and vigilant ‘Chips’ Murphy right on the sound of the half time whistle. A score turning it around with the visitors now to the fore on a 1-06 to 1-05 scoreline.

Darragh Heavin goaled for Colmans quickly on the turnover. With Evan O’Driscoll on top of his role greatly helped by Timmy Barry and Diarmuid O’Donovan on either side of him and some ideally placed clearances fell ideally for a lively mobile Saints’ attack. Two John Temple goals, a third coming off the stick of Ciaran Pietropaolo followed, and it was 4-06 to 2-09 to the end of the third quarter and beyond. James O’Brien was excellent for Colmans and his late goal four minutes over time won the day. A heartbreaker for the second time in eight months. There is football v Carrigtwohill this weekend. Hurling against Blackrock on Wednesday evening, June 21st. Both matches in Ballynoe. See fixtures.

Scorers: J Temple (2-01), C Pietropaolo (1-02), D O’Connell (0-03 frees) (0-05), D Murphy (1-00), T Clancy and C Leamy (0-01 each). St Colman’s scorers: J O’Brien (1-06 frees) (0-01 ’65) (0-01 sideline cut) (1-10), D Heavin (1-02), A Lee (0-01 free) (1-01) and D Crotty (0-02).

St Catherine’s team: G Sheehan, G O’Callaghan McCarthy, C McCarthy, C Murray. T Barry, E O’Driscoll, D O’Donovan, D O’Connell, C Hayes, C Hickey, C Pietropaolo (team captain), C Leamy, J Bryan, J Temple, D Murphy. Subs: T Clancy and K O’Donoghue for C Hickey and J Bryan (both second half), A Bryan for G O’Callaghan McCarthy (59). Also S Aherne, T Dee and J Hickey. Referee: David Butler (Carrigtwohill).

U17 Championship Draws

As one sees it there would be a two-pronged benefit going with all these games at U17 level. Providing ideal preparation for upcoming championship and try and progress to the last four of the leagues which are relevant and prestigious competitions in their own right. St Catherines will be away to Kilworth/ Araglen Óg in game one section two of the division 2 Rebel Óg East U17 Football Championship. It’s down for Wednesday, July 19th. First home match will be against Cobh at Ballynoe one week later, on Wednesday, July 26th. Hurling commences after that. So it’s onto probably Sallybrook for a round 3 football championship encounter v Glanmire 2 on August 9th. While August 23rd will be up against St Vincents in Farranree. Group stages of the competition finish up with a home tie v Kiltha Og. Down for Wednesday, September 6th.

St Catherines are based in division one of the Rebel Óg East U17 Hurling Championship. Starting in Ballynoe v Bride Rovers on Wednesday, August 2nd. Two weeks later home to St Colmcilles on Wednesday, August 16th. First trek on the road will be to Caherlag facing Erins Own on Wednesday, August 30th. Back to Ballynoe for Kiltha Óg on Wednesday, September 13th. Probably finishing up in Cloyne again on Sunday, September 24th. Schools well open then and probably getting too late for evening matches. Plenty of games there. Both codes promoted. Keep it going lads and best of luck in the quest to attain glory. Same goes for the U15s. Next week we examine their football/hurling championship campaigns. Take note and watch out for a restructured phase 2 of the U12 league programme of games. Also U13s don’t play championship. They will start a league programme soon.

Teddy McCarthy RIP

Much has understandably been written, deserving of acres of column inches, on the sad and sudden passing of the legendary Teddy McCarthy. Yet another so unexpected departure of a largely cult GAA figure following on the deaths of Seamus Looney, Christy Ryan and Seanie Leary among others in recent times. We remember the years roaring on Teddy and fellow players from the terraces and stands of Páirc Uí Chaoimh, Limerick, Thurles and Croke Park. That swager, that leap, invariably from a standing position. Of course, should he get a run at it Teddy could easily tower over any player in the immediate patch of ground. Such was his athleticism. Those leaps would inspire his colleagues and rebel rousers outside the wire as much as any score. Teddy possessed an aura very few players had. There must be facts and figures. Statistics roll with the name Teddy McCarthy. But his greatest achievement was the love and passion he brought and his love for the game. Be it hurling or football. His legacy.

Can you believe Teddy McCarthy played his first senior hurling championship match with his beloved Cork in the All-Ireland Final of 1986. Giving a brief interview afterwards, the words ‘this one is for Micka (Brennan)’ still resonate. To this day Teddy remains the only player to win Liam and Sam medals in the same year, 1990. Of all his achievements this is what he will be remembered most for. With the dual role now frowned upon it seems we won’t see it occur again. Teddy McCarthy would have four All-Ireland senior medals. Two hurling, two football. Has a football All-Star and was player of the year in 1989. Won two county senior football titles with Imokilly. Years being ‘84 and ‘86. Played for Ireland in the compromise rules. Truth be known, no words could reflect the impact Teddy McCarthy had on all of us. Now under the wrong circumstances but it’s time to get out the copy of Teddy Boy again.

Clubhouse Café

Now then, did you hear of the fantastic new addition to St Catherine’s GAA Grounds? Clubhouse Café has opened its doors and is selling Maher’s Coffee and Leahy’s Open Farm ice cream. Both suppliers must be thanked for their help in setting up their products. Open on Saturday mornings and occasionally during the week where young and old can gather. Thanks to everyone who has helped in getting the idea off the ground. Too many to mention here. Though credit must go to Jackie and John Mulcahy, juvenile club sponsors, for donating the coffee machine, and soon to be local trader Vincent McCarthy for manufacturing the sizeable table in club colours where you can enjoy your purchases. Remember you sit there. It’s not for standing or walking on.

St Catherines would love if new help would come on board and assist to sell coffee of a night. If you can do so just let juvenile chairman Shane Fitzgerald know. Note that all financial intake goes back into the development of the club. Just in that general area that we refer to child welfare office Ber Feeney, instrumental in setting up a new noticeboard publicising all welfare regulations. It’s there for all to see. You can purchase your weekly lotto tickets while enjoying that americano or cappuccino. New results poster containing the scanning QR code is on the board also. While new jackpot board is on a dressing room wall. Just a reminder the defibrillator sits on the wall directly outside the gym. In putting these words together, Pat Hartigan, Padraig O’Connor and Thomas ‘Waxer’ Murphy are lining the pitches which Waxer always has in pristine condition. It’s always handy to have it done. You see, a lot goes on behind the scenes.
