Lisgoold GAA Notes.

  • Jun 23,2023

A super weekend of action in which we saw the Cork footballers take a major scalp in beating Mayo. In Dungourney it was Colemans brace which was Lisgoold saving grace as they finally registered a win over Glenbower in the Imokilly JAFC group stage. The Juveniles are at it again as they qualified for another final (this time it’s the Under 14’s in football)  However, the real story that has the whole parish buzzing is the fantastic journey by a very popular and well liked gentleman in the parish - Mr Mikey Clifford.

Super Mikey Clifford

The GAA held the M. Donnelly ‘GAA Football for ALL’ Interprovincial Finals in May, delivered in partnership with the ISSSC. Children within these schools were competing in this 9-a-side Gaelic Football tournament. The players represented the regions of Connacht, Dublin, Munster, North Leinster, South Leinster and Ulster and are drawn from 15 different schools. Each squad comprises twelve boys and Twelve girls who have been selected from regional trials to play on the hallowed turf of Croke Park. This event reflects the Association’s on-going commitment to engaging with everyone to ensure there is GAA for all. As set out in the new GAA Strategic Plan, Fís Shoiléir 2018-2021. The aim of the games are to;

Increase participation in GAA Games Offer a fun, healthy, social outlet for all abilities to the games

Connect or re-connect people with their local GAA club

Allow opportunities for everyone in the community to get involved with the games.

To allow all participants the opportunity to develop their skills and team play in a safe and controlled environment

In years gone by we had many a player from the parish donning the colours of County and Province in all codes. However, only a select few have ever managed to grace to hallowed turf of Croke Park. Brian Clifford, Liam O’Shea, the two Cronin brothers on the hurling panel at the moment (Ciarán and John) their uncle Michael just to name a few. However, up to now, only our club legend Willie Moore ever has managed to obtained medal at headquarters and that was in the 1954 All-Ireland Senior Hurling final for the Rebels (we hope sometime in the near future hopefully our own Duds may at some stage join him).

However, for now, in 2023, Willie Moore is now joined by our own Mikey Clifford. Cliffords being successful in croke park has been a common thing to see in recent years (unfortunate in one sense - depending on who you support!!). This though does not deter away from a wonderful achievement by Mikey who was selected for Munster in the aforementioned football tournament in the last few weeks. He represented his school, club, county and province with skill, honour and a touch of class. Mikey we as a club (and parish) salute you on this wonderful achievement. You are one in a million - congratulations from everyone in the club.

Imokilly Junior A Football Championship Round 1

Lisgoold          2-8(14)

Glenbower Rovers 0-11(11)

At Dungounrey

June 17th 2023

In what was an open, free-flowing, spirited game last week, the footballers finally registered a win over Glenbower Rovers in the East Cork JAFC but didn’t have it easy by any means. The Dungourney pitch was in splendid nick and with weather conditions favouring football, the strong passionate crowd that turned up to the ground, were treated to a decent game of football. Missing a few of regulars to injuries, illness, and working abroad. Lisgoold had to re-arrange the starting fifteen.

The Management elected to give youth its fling and gave Noel O’Driscoll and Sean Coleman their Debuts. A vert youthful and energetic Glenbower were quick to get going in this encounter with scores of their own. Coming from the boot of Richie Long. Lisgoold fought back valiantly   to the end of the first quarter with a few points of their own John Cashman, Cian Scannell and the very industrious Cathal Hickey. At the end of the first quarter we were deadlocked at three points each. Glenbower raised the stakes with some very slick moves and were able to ease ahead with Kelleher, Long and O’Brien assisting them. In fact, it could have been a lot more if it wasn’t for Shaun Murphy (Captain), Noel O’Driscoll and Jason Hegarty who played some stirling stuff to ensure we weren’t too far behind. It was 0-7 to 0-5 in favour of Glenbower entering the end of the half when we had the first key moment. A wonderful flowing team move that went from one end to the other involving John Cronin, Cian Scannell, the Cashmans eventually eneded up to the quicksilver Coleman who slid in (legally) to raise the first major. It was a body blow for Glenbower who to be fair had a grip of things at this point but at the short whistle found themselves a point behind. It was 1-5 to 0-7.

In the second half, the lads pressed on with their advantage and with good team play and with some of younger lads blending in well with the experienced heads on the team, got goal number two on the 41st minute from Sean Coleman. Points by Bill Whelan and Cashy stunned Glenbower and although Kelleher responded for them in kind they were down by four points (2-7 to 0-9) with fifteen minutes to go. From here on though, Glenbower seemed to take over and although Lisgoold were resolute in defence, the men in blue and gold only offered one more point for the remainder of the encounter. Rovers pressed as much as they could, but they could not close the gap. A mixture of dropped shots, stern defence (from Lisgoold) and poor decision making by Rovers ensured Lisgoold would never lose their lead. A sense of calmness was in the defence especially with highly experienced keeper Ciaran in the sticks. There was a bit needle towards the end as some senseless black cards were handed out but, in a way, understandable as it is championship and sometimes you do what you must do to win. Lisgoold did though did enough to warrant a win and although they were much more economical than their opponents this time around and more experienced, cut-throat opponent could have done more damage and we may have seen a different result.

It was a very enjoyable game to watch for those present and there was plenty of positive viewpoints for management to mull over. A win is a win and they have started 2023 with a bang. Management elected to give youth its fling and were rewarded with Noel O’Driscoll, Evan Manning (who came on) and Sean Coleman (who bagged the two crucial goals). In this football championship the next game up is a top of table (Group 2) clash vs Aghada on July 1st in which victory over the boys from Rostellan should be enough to give the Lisgoold men passage towards the knockout stages.

Monthly Meeting

The next Monthly meeting is on Monday 3rd July in the Clubhouse at 8pm.

Abernethy Cup Tournament Game.

Recently we saw the official launch of this year's Abernethy Cup which will take place in Castlemartyr on Monday July 3rd and brings together Imokilly and Ballygunner.  This Is certainly a high-profile fixture with some top class hurling guaranteed.  Our own John cronin was amongst those present at the launch which also saw Board members and Imokilly players convene at Abernethys Midleton base. So mark the date in the diary as the Abernethy Cup returns to the calendar in two weeks’ time after a lapse of a number of years.  - Monday July 3rd - 7.45pm at Paddy Walsh Memorial Park

Cork 1-14 Mayo 1-11

Well Cork had a marvellous victory in Limerick last Sunday over a high fancied Mayo side in Round 3 of the All-Ireland SFC. Research has shown that having a good support system has so many positive benefits and Cork overcame that too even though they were outnumbered in the attendance too as the crowd of just over 9,000 were Mayo fans for the most part, espically when we had a few of the senior supporters in club of the cork footballers in attendance.

Cork defended mighty cutting out attacks causing overcarrying by Mayo, had several turnovers while eventually carving up the Mayo defence to plant some vital scores as the clock down. When some of the more experienced players were forced off their replacements done so well.  This was the work of a great panel and good management.  Let’s hope that the Rebels get the support they deserve now in their preliminary quarter final game versus Roscommon at the Páirc. Rebels Abú.

Safe Club Program Meeting on Thursday 22nd June and Audits shortly.

Time has moved on since the launch of the Safe Clubs Program for Imokilly Clubs took place in Páirc Uí Chaoimh on the twenty second of February. There was an excellent turn out that night with 22 clubs from the Division represented.  There was interesting speakers with facts and figures on the night especially Patrick O’Brien, Health, and Safety Officer, Croke Park who outlined the aims of the Safe Club Program. He gave a common-sense presentation on the night. The theme was a proactive approach to health & safety throughout all areas of the Club, including grounds, buildings, maintenance, machinery, and accommodation of spectators.

Now three months later he will be holding another “Microsoft Teams Meeting” with all the Clubs and their representatives on the evening of Thursday 22nd June and he will notify all clubs. Then the Audits are commencing on Monday 24th July.  We have every confidence that all our Imokilly Clubs will have up to date Safety Statement and their grounds in good order for the walk about and inspection.

There will be a Special Awards evening when Clubs have completed the process with prizes for the Safest Clubs in East Cork with three prizes of 1st gets €1500 Voucher, 2nd gets €1000, and 3rd gets €500 Voucher. Should make it interesting.  All participating Clubs will receive a Safe Club Plaque.
