Junior A Football Championship gets off to a great start.
Carrigtwohill 1-13 Erin's Own 2-6
Carrigtwohill done well to in Cobh to defeat the Division 2 League champions Erins Own in Cobh. Erins Own were down a few regulars due to injury and holidays but led at half time by 1-4 to 0-6 with as Alan Mylab got the goal. However, they had a player dismissed with a straight red card early in the second half and it changed the game somewhat as Carrig applied the pressure. James Carroll and Peter O’Shea tried hard for Erins Own but with Daniel Murnane scoring a total of 0-7, Cillian Barry getting the goal and Pat O Sullivan 0-2 Carrig finished stronger and deserved the victory.
Fr O Neills 2-10 Carrignabhfear 0-6.
Fr O’Neills had a fine win over Division One Junior League Champions Carrignabhfear n Carrigtwohill n Sunday evening. Fr O Neills led 0-8 to 0-4 at half time despite the best efforts of Paul Sheehan and Timmy Geaney in the half back line for Carrig and James Forde working hard in the half forward line. However, a Declan Dalton goal put Fr O’Neills on their way in the second half and Joe Mellerick slotted a penalty for them in the 62nd minute for a comprehensive victory. They fielded a strong outfit and are good on the ball. Michael Mellerick at corner Back, Jason Hankard in the middle and Billy Dunne at full forward are serious operators. Good win here for O’Neills.
Billy Dunne Capt Fr O Neills and Timmy Geaney Capt Carrig na Bhfear with referee David Butler before the game.
Bride Rovers 3-15 Castlemartyr 0-8.
Bride Rovers like Fr O’Neills are mixing the big Ball with the small ball well recording a powerful win over a fancied Castlemartyr side. There were up 0-6 before Castlemartyr rose a white flag. Conleith Ryan was in particularly good form for Rovers as they were well on top at half time. Rovers banged in a penalty in the second half to kill off the game as a contest. They play with a powerful commitment and spirit and while its early days yet if they can manage this championship with their hurling outings, they will be hard to beat.
Midleton 1-10 Youghal 1-9.
This was a keenly fought one with the scores changing hands on several occasions. Enda Cronin had a goal for Youghal in the first half cancelled out by a good goal scored by Aaron Mulcahy for Midleton. Youghal led by just 0-1 at half time. Scores were hard come by, and it was 1-7 apiece going into injury time but a free converted by Midleton just before the fulltime whistle gave them victory by just 0-1. Midleton player Aidan Ryan received an unfortunate but nasty facial injury during the game, and we wish him a safe recovery. Youghal now play Castlemartyr in another interesting game in two weeks’ time.
Aghada 1-16 Cloyne 1-4
This game was at Aghavine on Friday evening and did not live up to the billing as Aghada recorded a facile victory over Cloyne. The former Cork U20 footballer Diarmuid Phelan who had a serious injury last year but is back in action again was the star here. Of course, Diarmuid had the proverbial cracker against Muskerry in the Cork SFC Divisions / Colleges Section last week when he lined out with Imokilly. Going well for Cloyne and between the posts was that evergreen star Diarmuid O’Sullivan at 43 years of age and he almost kept a clean sheet. Cloyne suffered from early as it was unfortunate that two of their members were red carded (one after two yellows) and you cannot take on a team like Aghada down numbers.
Action from the Aghada v Cloyne game.
Lisgoold 2-8 Glenbower Rovers 0-11
This game was in Dungourney in Dungourney under the stewardship of Cathal McAllister. The first half was a close affair, and it was 1-5 to 0-7 at half time with debut 18-year-old player getting the goal for Lisgoold. Glenbower did have a lot of possession and missed some opportunities that could have made all the difference. Good play in the second half held off a youthful Glenbower side with the Lisgoold youngster Sean Coleman scoring their second goal with John Cronin, Sean Murphy and Kieran Cashman doing well. Ciarán Leahy, Darragh O’Brien and Dara Motherway did well for Glenbower.
Good workout for Imokilly hurlers.
Imokilly played Dungarvan in Castlemartyr on Monday night in a very useful challenge game. It was a high scoring game and referee David Butler was certainly busy keeping the score while exchanges were fair and fast. The final score was Imokilly 0-31 to Dungarvan 3-15. Both teams were down some players including some of the stars. However, we were still reasonably strong with John Cronin, Ciarán O’Brien and Will Leahy, members of our great 3-in a row side doing well and boosted by Eoin Davis, Timmy Wilkes, and Jack Leahy Cork U20 stars who did very well too. Dungarvan were well served by county men Patrick Curren and Michael Kiely, but Darragh Lyons was not available on the night.
Launch of the Abernethy Cup.
We had a launch of the Abernethy Cup at Abernethy Ford Showrooms in Midleton last Friday evening courtesy Colman Abernethy. Dick Fitzgerald Leas Cathaoirleach stood in for our Cathaoirleach Avril Geary who is on holiday and outlined the value of the Abernethy Cup down the years to Imokilly as there. were many great tournaments. Our Runaí Patrick Mulcahy and Cisteoir Oliver O’Loughlin were also present while John Cronin, Lisgoold represented the players. This year it will be just one game but a special one as Imokilly take on Ballygunner of Waterford in Castlemartyr on Monday 3rd July at 7.45pm. There will be an array of county talent on both teams, and we are looking forward to a great evening. Colman Abernethy of the Company responded by thanking Imokilly and his club Castlemartyr for the use of the pitch as hurling always had a special meaning for the Abernethy family and his beloved Castlemartyr. So don’t forget folks the big game for the Cup is on in Castlemartyr on Monday 3rd July at 7.45pm and it should be a cracker.
At the Launch: Oliver O'Loughlin, Cisteoir; Dick Fitzgerald, Leas Cathaoirleach; Colman Abernethy of Abernethy Ford Motors;

Cork footballers make a sweeping statement.
Cork 1-14 Mayo 1-11
Well Cork had a marvellous victory in Limerick last Sunday over a high fancied Mayo side in Round 3 of the All-Ireland SFC. Research has shown that having a good support system has so many positive benefits and Cork overcame that too even though they were outnumbered in the attendance too as the crowd of just over 9,000 were Mayo fans for the most part. Cork defended mighty cutting out attacks causing overcarrying by Mayo, had several turnovers while eventually carving up the Mayo defence to plant some vital scores as the clock down. When some of the more experienced players were forced off their replacements done so well. This was the work of a great panel and good management. Let’s hope that the Rebels get the support they deserve now in their preliminary quarter final game versus Roscommon at the Páirc. Rebels Abú.

Patrick Mulcahy – life as a commentator up and coming.
Our Runaí Patrick Mulcahy is certainly hitting the high notes these times as his commentating career continues to climb. He served an apprenticeship with Community Radio, later with C103FM and commentated on club games during the live streaming with Examiner Sports. Patrick has now moved onto RTE and given super commentaries on a load of games this year involving Wexford v Galway SHC, Limerick v Clare SHC, Tipperary v Offaly SHC and more recently Cork v Mayo in the exciting senior football championship in Limerick last Sunday.
A sports fanatic and with a mighty knowledge of the equine sports too he has a facility of diction with a clear strong voice and always has his homework done. Overall, he presents well, performs well and is versatile in giving the listener a real picture of the game. So, congrats to our Runaí Patrick, we wish him the best and no doubt he will be hoping for some big days commentating on Rebels games into the future.

Bumper Saturday of championship games in the All-Ireland series.
What a Saturday of games with the All-Ireland SHC Qr Finals in Limerick as Clare play Dublin and Tipperary play Galway at 4pm and 6.15pm with both games on RTE and free to air. The All- Ireland Minor Semi-Final; Kerry v Monaghan in O’Connor Park at 2pm on TG4. Then we have the All-Ireland SFC Preliminary Qr Finals Cork v Roscommon in the Páirc at 2pm; Kildare v Monaghan in O’Connor Park at 4.45 and Donegal v Tyrone in MacCumhaill Park at 7pm. Now most importantly all these games are available on GAA GO. So, if one lives in Ballinspittle, Ballintober, Ballybay, Bodenstown, Ballybofey, or Ballygawley and while it is pay TV if one cannot get to see their county play, they can see it on live TV. So, it looks as if GAA GO can have great value going forward and no doubt the hindsight of game selection will be the foresight of quality scheduling. What do you think?
