Super Duds

A simply superb individual performance from our own Duds who scored 1-1 helped the Cork Under 20’s to their third all-Ireland in four short years. Well done Diarmuid and to all involved with the squad it was great to see. Duds joins our own Cathal Hickey in terms of winning an all-Ireland at this grade. Let’s just hope this is a journey to even bigger things. As going by the chart below scoring 2-11 from play in this year’s championship is no mean feat. Diarmuid, you are a credit to your club, parish and family. You are a great inspiration to our young guns who play for the blue and gold. Looking forward to this year’s hurling championship in August.

Imokilly Leagues

Something that this writer would never ever have thought he would be typing that at the June bank holiday weekend the football leagues in East Cork were completed for the year. This is a welcome change from our traditional of having a 12-month season and giving football in the division the respect and attention it deserves. The hurling leagues are due to be completed by the end of June. A buala bos to our CCC, Runaí Patrick Mulcahy, and all including the players who contributed to the smooth running of our leagues this year as a total of 74 football games were played including the finals in just over fourteen weeks. A great tribute should be paid to the board and the committee to have the leagues completed in a timely manner. This can be only beneficial going forward to give the players a structured season where it is beneficial for all concerned.

State of Play

The hurlers have two rounds left in the RedFM division 4 leagues. All that is left to play for is going for third place. In division four in Imokilly the harriers bid for promotion will literally go to final match. Dungourney vs Bride Rovers on June 12th. A win for either side will put them through to the final vs Midleton, however a draw result in this game, will mean celebration time for Hickeys Harriers as they will go through on head to head– here hoping that is the case.

Engagements

Great news was buzzing around the parish coupled with the successful Under 20’s we learnt over the weekend that John Cashman and Taylor Bradley announced their engagement over the weekend. Also, we learnt that Leanne Woods (a very talented player with the ladies footballers) and Martin Hennessy announced their engagement as well. The best of luck to both couples – great news to hear.

The club would like also to congratulate our former club chairman Paudie Ryan and his wife Naomi on the birth of a baby girl - Pippa in the last week. Also, congratulations to Moss Mulcahy and wife Roxanne on the birth of a baby boy in the last week as well.

Imokilly Footballers Play Muskerry in SFC

Our Divisional side are out in the Bon Secours Football Championship, Divisional Colleges Section as they take on Muskerry in Carrigtwohill at 7.30pm this Thursday evening.  They have had an opportunity to view the players over an exciting East Cork League programme this year and, of course, have got together a few times. Best of luck to the lads and our management team of Eoin O Neill Aghada, Noel O’Riordan Glenville, Clive Cremin Carrigtwohill, Gerry Sparrow Glanmire, and Pat Mackey Youghal

Teddy Mac

Cork GAA great Teddy McCarthy passed away suddenly. He was the only man to win All-Ireland senior hurling and football championship medals in the same year, achieving that historic feat in 1990 when Cork won the double. He was midfield for the hurling success against Galway as he scored 0-3 and played wing-forward in the football victory over Meath.

McCarthy won three All-Ireland U21 football medals for Cork, before the Sarsfields and Glanmire player made his Cork senior debuts at football in 1985 and at hurling in 1986. He won an All-Ireland senior football medal in 1989, claiming an All-Star award that same year, and a hurling league medal in 1993. After retiring as a player, he served as senior hurling manager of his club Sarsfields, while he also had club involvements with Cork sides Bandon, Éire Óg and Kilworth, and also managed the Laois senior hurlers.

Teddy was a true ambassador the GAA wider family. His passing has left a huge void for all our members both young and old and he will be hugely missed by all. The Club wishes to extend our deepest condolences to his wife Oonagh, sons Cian and Niall and daughter Sinead and other family members.

Ar dheis Dé go raibh a h’anam dílis.

Best of luck to all those doing state exams in the coming weeks.

Date For The Diary

Mark this date in the diary - the return of the Abernethy Cup.  It's a competition which has taken a variation of formats in recent years, but hasn't been played since the covid outbreak.  Now it's back with a highly attractive one off game - Imokilly v Ballygunner in Castlemartyr on Monday July 3rd - more details to follow.

Imokilly 2023

Imokilly footballers and hurlers got a pre championship  boost last week with the announcement of a new sponsorship deal with green energy company DP Energy.  The footballers begin their campaign against Muskerry in Carrigtwohill this Thursday evening, whilst the hurlers won't be in action until late August.  Best of luck to all our players involved with both panels and to the divisional teams for the season.  See attached photo image of John Cronin who was present at the new jersey launch.
