Lisgoold GAA Notes.
- Jun 05,2023
A Quiet enough week took place for all the gaels in the parish. The first team hurlers ended their journey to division three with an away defeat versus Ballinhassig in the RedFM hurling league. However, main stage for this weekend will be at intercounty level, with our own Diarmuid Healy will be lining out with the Cork under 20’s in the all-Ireland final this Sunday vs Offaly.

In what was an open, free-flowing, spirited game last week, the first team hurlers fell short in their push for promotion to division three and thus ended their chances of promotion for 2024 by a good bit to spare. Due to a mixture of injuries, holidays and suspensions our crew weren’t at full capacity but nevertheless they proceeded to take on the challenge. The ground was in splendid nick and with weather conditions favouring hurling, the strong crowd that turned up to the ground, were treated to a reasonable game. A lightening start for the hosts as they raced into an early lead. Cathal Hickey, John Cronin and Kieran Cashman were doing well to stem the tide. It wasn’t enough however as the hosts with the scores at 0-4 apiece after twelve minutes decided to move up an gear. A very dominant spell by them including a goal on the 18th minute meant it was 1-8 to 0-6. Our men battled gamely to get back with John Cashman Mark Hegarty and the O’Brien brothers chipping in with good performances. The short whistle blew and we went into the dressing rooms down by six points 1-12 to 0-9.
In the second half the management decided to be more aggressive and attack more which for the short term worked. We began to close the gap and managed to raise a green flag with Caolan O’Brien to make it 1-16 to 1-11 at the 40th minute in fact the gap could have been closer however Declan O’Brien unfortunately hit the post. That was as good as it got for us as ballinhassig took this game by the scruff of the neck and with some excellent score taking and resoult defending eased themselves into a seven-point lead with ten minutes to go (1-21 to 1-14). From here on in it was only going to be one winner as much as our lads tried and they did try – there was no way of getting ahead of a well drilled and skillful ballinhassig side.
This ends our chances of promotion for 2024. There is still two games left in which the squad will have plenty of chances to show what they are capable of come championship on the august bank holiday weekend.
State of Play
The hurlers have two rounds left in the RedFM division 4 leagues, there is no chance of promotion, as Ballinhassig and Valley Rovers are in the league final. In division four in Imokilly the Harriers bid for promotion will literally go to final match. Dungourney vs Bride Rovers on June 11th. A win for either side will put them through to the final vs Midleton, however a draw result in this game, will mean celebration time for Hickeys Harriers as they will go through on head to head– here hoping that is the case.
