John Cashman PRO
JFL1 Concludes
Castlemartyr 2-7 Lisgoold 1-16
Our Junior Footballers concluded their league programme on Thursday evening last with a home game against Lisgoold. Despite a very bright start, when both teams played some fine attacking football, the game ended in a five point defeat, which means we finished the campaign in a mid table position.
Similar to the previous home match against Carrigtwohill, our opponents got on top in the second quarter and moved into a 1-11 to 1-5 interval advantage. Prior to this, the scoreboard was deadlocked at 0-5 each after 16 minutes. However, Jack McGann's very well struck penalty three minutes from the break was our only score thereafter in the first period. Whilst it did reduce the gap to just two points, Lisgoold responded instantly with a goal and a point to build up a healthy interval advantage.
Jack, who had enjoyed a fine league campaign, had also contributed a brace of early points , with Jamie Stack, Mike Cosgrave and Darragh Joyce also registering excellent scores. However, once John Cashman edged Lisgoold back ahead on 18 minutes, Lisgoold seemed to kick on and they carried plenty of threat going forward.
The second half saw the lead stretch to eight points, before Charlie O'Neiil crashed home a fine 39th minute goal to give the reds renewed hope. More goal chances arrived thereafter but were not converted and Lisgoold were able to tag on further points which ensured them victory.
Team - Conor Whyte, Oisin Cantwell, Eoin Ronayne, Barra O'Tuama, Cathal Martin, Darragh Moran, Niall O'Donovan, Mike Cosgrave, Darragh Joyce, Eoghan Martin, Jack McGann, Conor Ronayne, Charlie O'Neill, Jamie Stack, Cian Murphy,
Sub - Darragh Cashman
Scorers - Jack McGann 1-4 ( incl 1-0 pen and 0-3 frees), Charlie O'Neill 1-0, Mike Cosgrave, Jamie Stack and Darragh Joyce 0-1 each.
All eyes are now on the championship summer ahead and the three round robin group games, which begin against Bride Rovers in Ballynoe on Sunday June 18th. Two weeks later Youghal provide the opposition in Killeagh, with the final game against Midleton in Dungourney on July 16th.
Six teams will advance to the knockout stages, with the best two group winners going directly to the semi finals.
Away Trip For Intermediate Hurlers
Argideen Rangers are on the radar for the intermediate hurlers in their next games, as they travel west to Timoleague for the 4pm throw-in on this Saturday May 27th. Dungourney meet Aghada on the same day, whilst Midleton entertain leaders Russell Rovers on Friday evening. Saturday's game will be match 7 of 9 for Castlemarty in the group.
Junior Hurling
A busy few weeks ahead for our junior hurlers in the division 2 league who have three league games on the horizon, beginning with the visit of leaders Midleton on Monday next May 29th (7.45pm). A week later on Bank Holiday Monday we entertained bottom placed Aghada at 7pm, with a trip to mid table Watergrasshill following quickly on Friday June 9th (7.30pm) Castlemartyr currently are in third place on the table with five points from four games.
All Weather
Good news broke recently when it was confirmed that planning permission has been received for our new Al Weather training pitch and floodlights. With the contractors currently involved in a similar project's expected start date is likely to be in about three months time. This latest development will mark a another major addition to our ever improving facilities at Paddy Walsh Memorial Park.
Centenary Committee
A meeting took place last week of the Centenary committee where further projects were considered. The committee are hoping to mark our special year in a number of different ways, including organising a special celebratory weekend , with the likely date being the August Bank Holiday Weekend in 2024. Pat "Dagger" Walsh has a massive historical collection which will no doubt also play a central part as club members young and old take a nostalgic trip down the time tunnel.. More updates to follow in the weeks ahead.
Golf Classic
Our fundraising Golf Classic is pencilled in for Wednesday July 19th and Thursday July 20th at Castlemartyr Golf Club. This Monday evening a special meeting will take place at the pitch (8pm) with a view to forming a sub committee to advance plans. Please consider joining us if you can assist in any way.
Trip To Limerick
Plenty of reds will no doubt make the journey to Shannonside on Sunday for the Munster Championship showdown against Limerick. It's a make or make day for the rebels against the All Ireland Champions. Ciarán had another great outing in Ennis yesterday, here's hoping the hurling summer can extend come 6pm on Sunday evening. Best wishes to Ciarán and all the Cork team.
Huge Thanks
A huge thanks to all who supported last Saturday's fundraiser in aid of the Quinn Family. Ciarán Collins who was one the main driving force behind the Kiltha Og event tells us that almost 8K was generated for the cause. Well done to all concerned.
