Facile win for Uí Mac Coille Hurler in SHC Championship

Uí Mac Coille 7-22 MTU 2-11

Uí Mac Coille recorded a facile victory over MTU in the Colleges / Divisions section of the Cork SHC at Páirc Uí Rinn last night.  They now Avondhu in the final who defeated UCC this evening by 2-22 to 1-21. and this will be held on next Sunday evening 21st August at 6pm in Páirc Uí Rinn.  The O’Riordan Cup will be on offer for the winners as it is the final of the Colleges / Divisions section and should be lively.  So, your support on the evening will be appreciated, please.

Back to last night’s game.  Well, it started at a slow pace and with Imokilly getting in for easy points and when Willie Leahy set up Sheamie Harnedy to bang home a goal on the second effort the game was as good as over and only 15 minutes gone with the score 1-7 to 0-2 in favour of Uí Mac Coille.  The whole scene pedestrianised from that time on as Imokilly struck another 1-7 and 0-2 for the students to leave it 2-14 to 0-4 at half time.

In the second half Uí Mac Coille put on their full quota of five subs and these boys’ meant business as they played for places and adding a further 5-8 in the second half to run out winners 7-22 to 2-11. Imokilly started with seven of the 3-in-a-row brigade on the field, and they were mighty. The other eight looking cracking good hurlers too on the night especially the two corner forwards Sean Desmond from the ‘Hill with 2-3 and Mikey Kelly from Castlemartyr 1-6. As for MTU even before the game they found it so difficult to gather their team and they had little work done.  However well done to our players and to Managers Denis Ring and his backroom team while there will be bigger tests ahead this was a championship outing and will help along the way. The referee Ian McCarthy (Bandon) had a good game with full turn out of officials while the pitch was hard due to the dry spell.

East Cork Junior A Football.

The way is now clear for the semi-finals of the Ryan Cup East Cork JHC. Cobh played Bride Rovers in the quarter final last week with Cobh reversing last year’s result in the final between the same teams on a score 0-7 to 4-8. The semi-final pairings now are Carrignabhfear versus Cobh and Castlemartyr versus Cloyne on the weekend of the 4th of September all going well.

In the battle for Jamesy Kelleher Sup, JAHC, last year’s champions, St Ita’s, are finding the going tough.  Although they won a game Cobh beat them.  They must beat Sarsfields in their next game to keep their season alive.  Sarsfields and Carrigtwohill have no points in that round robin section to date. Cobh are going well with two wins (4 points) and Midleton have one (2 points) but play one another shortly too.

Carrignabhfear and Erins Own are looking good with three points apiece in the other group. Killeagh have two points while Watergrasshill and Fr O’Neills have none to date have none to date and could find it hard to progress.  Sunday the 28th of August could settle a lot as there are several vital games to be played that day.

Imokilly take on Avondhu in Final of Colleges / Divisions SHC and O’Riordan Cup at stake.

Imokilly will meet Avondhu will meet for a place in the quarter- finals of the Co-op Superstores Cork Premier SHC in Páirc Uí Rinn on this Sunday evening 21.8.22 at 6pm.  Avondhu have come through the tough side of the draw including being pushed to extra time by Duhallow and meeting a strong UCC side.  However, they have stood up well to date and have a lot of leaders on the field especially their captain Mark Keane, Joe O’Sullivan, Jack Twomey, Colin O’Brien, and Stephen Condon.

However, Imokilly are laden with talent as many hardened campaigners like John Condon, Brian Lawton, Sheamie Harnedy, Willie Leahy and are complimented by younger men like Eoin Davis, Ciarán Joyce, Kevin O’Neill, Sean Desmond, and Mike Kelly. Let there be no doubt it this game could be the proverbial cracker.  If Imokilly hit their true form, they should make it to the quarter finals of the SHC, but this will be a supreme test.  Wishing all our players, manager Denis Ring and his backroom outfit the very best of luck. Hoping to see you there and your support will be appreciated. Uí Mac Coille Abú.
