SENIORS SIZZLE IN JULY, JUNIORS BLAZE AWAY IN AUGUST.
Well our 2022 adult Hurling Championship Season got off to a sensational start last weekend with a great double. In continental style sunshine in Midleton on Sunday our Senior Hurlers got their Round Robin Group games off to a flying start with a most impressive win over Carrigtwohill. Then twenty four hours later in Lisgoold the Junior B hurling team enjoyed a strong second half to defeat Cloyne in the first of three Group games. True the two games were played in different months but, as they say ‘what a difference a day makes’!- Sunday was a blazer of a day with sunscreen, sunhats and sunburn the order of the day. Monday was August 1st, the Bank Holiday Monday, and a damp, dreary, drizzly day with leaden skies. In fairness to the vagaries of the weather we still scored 7goals and 40 points between the two contests and all bar nine points coming from play. The Senior Hurlers recorded a 5 24 win over Carrig on Sunday while the Juniors defeated Cloyne by 2 16 to 1 10. It’s all systems go now and this coming weekend will be another hectic one. On Friday night we will be expecting a bumper crowd in Pairc na Bride for an East Cork ‘Derby’ game in the County PIHC. On Sunday next we have our second game in the Senior Hurling Championship against Ballyhea. Meanwhile the Lotto Jackpot of €22,400 was not won on the last Tuesday of July and was a massive €22, 600 on Tuesday of this week, August 2nd.

‘Amazing’ and ‘unbelievable’ were just some of words uttered in Clonmult memorial Park, HQ of Midleton GAA, last Sunday. It wasn’t at the conclusion either but with only thirteen minutes gone and we were 2 8 to 0 3 ahead. They say ‘Tosach maith leath na hoibre/ A good start is half the work’ and that certainly proved the case last Sunday afternoon. With a two o clock start there was a fine crowd present -just like East Cork games of old, and a blazing sun which shone brightly, it was a great atmosphere for a hurling game. Senior Championship starts for Ronan O Connell, Cillian Tobin, Josh Ahern and Adam Walsh meant we lined out with our youngest ever Senior team. Within a minute and a half from Cathal McAllister throwing in the sliotar we had three points scored from Adam, Cian and William. Better it got as Brian Roche won a great ball and put Cillian Tobin through for a brilliant goal. We were well on top at midfield with Kieran Kearney and Cian O Connor mopping up everything in front of a well marshalled defence. By the fifth minute Carrig had raised two white flags before our forwards combined in a lovely passing movement. It ended with the green flag waving after Cillian Tobin gave a superb pass to Brian Roche – up by 2 4 to 0 2 after just six minutes. Carrig were shell shocked and the big Rovers following were thrilled. Carrig had their third point before we hit over four points. Ronan O Connell gave an inch perfect pass to Cillian and he slotted over. Then Shane O Connor had point followed by scores from Ronan and Brian Roche -we were 2 8 to 0 3 in front. Tadhg, Shane and Jordan were tight at the back and in fairness Cian Hogan was ever reliable and struck great puck outs. Time and time again our half back line cleared their lines so well. Team Captain Paddy O Flynn worked so well with Eoin and Shane. Sixteen minutes had elapsed before we had our first scorable free and Conor Barry made no mistake. By then Carrig had gone to 5 points. No team can dominate for the hour and after we went 2 9 to 0 5 ahead, a lead of ten points the boys in Blue and Gold hit a purple patch and hit five points on the trot to halve our lead. We needed a response to stem the tide and the lads responded well. From distance paddy and Cillian notched great points and when Brian Roche added another we were 2 12 to 0 10 ahead. Carig got the last point of the half so we went in at the break leading by 2 12 to 0 11. The talk was we were well ahead but if Carrig sneaked a goal they’d be in with a big shout. Our lads had played great hurling using the sliotar intelligently and we’d have a slight breeze behind us. Our lads were aware a few early scores for Carrigtwohill could change the trend of the game so a fast restart was vital. We outscored Carrig by 7 points to 2 in the opening ten minutes of the second half. Adam got a pair and white flags from Paddy, Conor, corner back Jordan, Cian O Connor and Kieran Kearney but us 2 19 to 0 13 in front – Carrig’s points came from Liam Gosnell. Next came an absolutely class goal as Brian Roche found Adam Walsh and he billowed the net from about 25 yards out, we were now 3 19 to 13 points in front. Michael Collins and Daniel Dooley came on and got involved straight away, Daniel hit two points and Twiggy sent over a beauty. Further points from Ronan and Cillian saw us well on top. Our forward line was in scorching form ad netted twice more with superb goals from Cillian and Brian to leave us winners of an amazing game by 5 24 to 0 20. It was huge score, probably the biggest since we scored 7 11 in Midleton in the drawn 1973 East Cork Junior Final against Erin’s Own. With 5 22 from play and 13 players scoring it was a stunning performance. However let’s not get carried away. Last year after two great Group Game wins maybe we were over confident facing Mallow and we know what the result was! Next Sunday back in Kildorrery we face Ballyhea who trounced Ballymartle last Saturday night. No need to remind anyone how tough the Ballyhea team will be. As I said it was like a day back in the 60’s or 70’s in Midleton where we played so many great games. It was just great to see such a huge crowd of Rovers supporters present on a great day for Bride Rovers. Well done to Liam Barry and his backroom team. Team & Scorers.

EAST CORK JUNIOR B GRADE HURLING CHAMPIONSHIP.

What a difference a day makes -from basking in the sunshine on Sunday we were huddled in raincoats on Monday in Lisgoold. With ourselves Cloyne, Midleton and Sarsfields in one Group each team will have three games in this Round Robin Section of the East Cork JBHC. Killeagh’s Arthur Murphy was in charge of the whistle. We played down to the road and with wind assistance in the first half. We missed a few early chances before Damien Buckley converted a 65 to open our account after Cloyne had hit the first point. Our next four points all came from placed balls, two frees by Shaunie Knox and two similar scores from Damien. It was in the 17th minute that we got our first score from play when Shaunie raised the white flag. Though playing with the wind and winning heaps of possession we weren’t converting our chances. At the other end our defence were superb with Adrian Buckley, Jack Connor , Liam Collins and Liam Forde were superb. Cloyne stayed in touch with some good points. We stretched ahead by four points, 9 to 5 at the break after good scores from Conleith Ryan and a brace from Damien -one from a 65. With the breeze against us , and strengthening, for the second half a slim lead of 4 looked dodgy enough. In fairness the second half saw a big improvement . With Seamus and Oisin and Conor coming forward with the sliotar our forward division got going. Though the men in Red and Black had the first white flag two points from Eddie Cashman, either side of a pointed 65 from Damien gave us a nice 6 point advantage. A great goal from Eddie after great work from Dj Cahill and Thomas Macak and another point from play by Damien saw us 1 13 to 0 6 ahead. Cloyne hit back with 1 1 in a few minutes. Then came the decisive score as Eddie whipped the sliotar to the net. Two points from Jesse O Keeffe and Damiens’ 8th point saw us win by 2 16 to 1 10. It was a tough game but a good win and good start to the campaign.

MINOR FOOTBALL
Last weekend was a busy one for our Minor footballers. They had two championship games in three days, both away from home. On Friday we travelled to Youghal and in a good game the Seasiders came out victorious on a scoreline of 1-15 to 1-9.
On Monday we were once again on our travels to Cobh for a clash with the home team. This was ‘last chance saloon’ game where the winners would advance to the Championship semi-final. It was tough on our panel of players coming so soon after Friday’s game but they really rose their game. The lads played some great football and dominated from start to finish. In the end we had a very good win by 3-10 to 0-4.
Our Panel for these games was; Ryan, Eldon, Adam, Darragh, Colin, Luke, Denis, Kieran, Kamso, Cormac, Cillian, Frank, Conor, Cillian, Louie, Ciaran, Oran, Jack, Cormac, Gearoid, Ronan and Gearoid Gubbins. (Injured. Ben. Cameron. Tomas) It’s back to Hurling this weekend when we are in action in the u-17 Premier2 Hurling v Shandrum away at 7-30 on Friday August 5th.
BIG GAME IN PITCH.
Last weekend we hosted Ballygiblin v Dripsey in the Co. PJHC on a wet Saturday afternoon and Erins Own v Carrignavar in East Cork JAHC on a glorious sunny evening. Ballygiblin had an easy win while the Junior game ended in a draw. This coming Friday night we host a big fixture Castlelyons who beat Carrigaline at the weekend face Watergrasshill (they drew with Eire Og) in Round 2 of the PIHC. The game is down for Friday evening at 7.30 pm so all Club Members than can please be at the grounds by half 6.
CUL CAMP.
Last week was the culmination of months of background work when we held our annual Cul camp. The week itself was a tremendous success with just over 200 boys and girls being put through their paces by a dedicated and enthusiastic coaching group.
We really are lucky that since the guidelines for coaching in these camps changed we have had a real call to arms from the club coaches. During the week we had over 60 coaches voluntarily give their time….some taking a full week off work, some rescheduling work diaries and some giving a day or 2 from their week…
The weather certainly held for the week with only some dampness on Wednesday threatening to cause any issues.
Each day was scheduled in a fantastic manner by Paddy Croke who’s organisational skills led to a more structured and balanced day. The kids were all exposed to the various skills of hurling/camogie and football for the first couple of hours with fun games for the final hour. Even though to the unseasoned observer those would have thought that Tug of war, ultimate frisbee, nerf ball, footgolf would have limited benefits to the kids however each game was chosen as they teach evasive skills, teamwork and tactical awareness.
On Wednesday we had the Roche twins attend which went down a treat but to be honest we had Emma all week which is even better!
On Thursday we handed out a fantastic goody bag which went down extremely well. We had overwhelming support from sponsors which are listed below.
Overall a fantastically fun camp with many, many positive words coming from parents and participants over the weekend. To the organising committee of Paddy Croke, Catherine Murphy, Triona Lyons, Emma Roddis, Grace Kearney and Jerome O’Driscoll we say a huge thank you.
To all the coaches who have seized this opportunity we also say thanks.
To John Arnold for his support with parking etc, John Murphy who arrived each morning to check if anything was needed we say thanks.

UNDER 11’s IN PAIRC UI CHAOIMH.
On Tuesday we took 26 players to Páirc Uí C to the Munster Council GAAActivity Football day. We played St. Pats , Canovee and Nenagh Eire óg before getting a tour of the stadium by inter county footballer - Ruairí Mc G.
It was a great day out and we would like to thank the Cork County Board for the opportunity, the players got to main on the main field, also parents for travelling on a week day. CONOLENCES.
We extend our deepest sympathy to the parents, sister and extended family of the late David Hogan of Dripsey. David’s grandfather was the late Davy Hogan of Shanavougha, Kildinan who hurled wit Bride Rovers in the 1960’s and 70’s and his great grandfather Dave was a Club player, selector and supporter for over fifty years.
