LOOKING DOWN MEMORY LANE
A couple of weeks ago, Ger Scully told us his version of event when the victorious 2001 Intermediate hurling team went to the top in Páirc Uí Chaoimh in early November. This week, we also look back to 2001 but we change codes to football as a very popular underage team went a long way towards League & Championship Glory that year! To tell us his memories is Colm Crowley...
2001 – A Football Odyssey

2001 will always remembered for the year that Killeagh won the County Intermediate League & Championship double. With the Intermediate Hurling success, it is easy to forget everything else that happened within the club. The minor footballers of Killeagh-Itas performed not just a double, but a double-double. East Cork league and championship success was followed with County B grade league and championship success.
Under the guidance of Buddsy, Froggy and Tucker, the minor footballers had an unbeaten campaign with the only blemish, a drawn match in the county League final against Doneraile in Glanworth.
Results from 2001 are hard to come by, so getting exact opponents/venues etc. are proving difficult, apart from a few of the stand out games, which we will go into a bit more detail below.
After comfortable run through East Cork league and championship (beating the likes of Fr O'Neills, Russell Rovers and Carraig na bhFear in the East Cork final. There are no records of the year, we are hoping our memories are correct) Killeagh-Itas played Ballydesmond (we think) in Mourneabbey. After a mediocre first half, a few tactical changes ended up with Killeagh-Itas pushing on in the second half to record a strong win and the perceived poison chalice of a semi-final against a very strong Eire Óg side.
This game is the one that is etched in my memory the most and I imagine the same for everyone who played or supported the team that year.
To put into context of the quality of this Eire Óg side. Their U17 age group won Cork Football Féile and in 2002 they won the Cork Minor A grade championship. A large number of players were part of the panel who won the Junior football county in 2008 and a few remained in board for the Intermediate winning team in 2014.
But 12 months before they were crowned the best minor football team in Cork at all grades, they had to come to Killeagh to play the home side in the County semi-final.
A large crowd assembled on a wet Sunday afternoon in Páirc Uí Chinnéide (we won the toss for home venue).
For 27 minutes, everything was going as expected. Eire Óg playing into a stiff breeze were leading 0-6 to 0-1, with the solitary Killeagh-Itas score coming from a free. But in the final 3 minutes of the first half, the hosts were given a lifeline. A mazy run from in front of the home dug out by William Sexton, ended with Killeagh-Itas scoring a goal. From the resulting kick out and passage of play, another point for the home side resulted in the minimum between the sides at half time.
The body language of both sides entering the dressing rooms at half time could not have been more different with the vocal home support urging on the Killeagh-Itas men.
The second half was a fiercely contested game. Eire Óg had the benefit of a strong breeze, rebuilding their lead which stayed between 2 and 3 points for most of the half. Killeagh-Itas staying in the game so long, unsettled some of the travelling support who heckled the home sideline on one occasion. A retort from a man who shall remain nameless of threatening to do something with a flag stick led, to laughter from the Killeagh-Itas supporters and bench.
With time ticking away, Killeagh-Itas started to eat into the three point lead and nearing full time, the game was level and a replay looked assured. There was to be one final twist in the tale though. A ball ended up with Colin Fogarty 35 metres from the Eire Óg goal. People probably know Colin more as a person who kicked people on the pitch but at that moment and that time, he kicked the ball with the cleanest connection and the ball crept over the crossbar to give Killeagh-Itas that crucial one point lead which they held, to win a memorable football match against the Ovens based side.
Much furore over the years has been the selection of player of the match that day. Whilst every player played a huge part in the victory the two wing backs in Clint Galvin and Jerry Dullea were superb. The man separating them in the half back line did alright as well, Mr. Stephen 'Horse' Murphy. But it was really a 20-man performance, so a collective man of the match to the whole panel and management was fairest.
Four weeks later in early December, we travelled to Brinny to play Tadhg MacCarthaighs in the county final. A ten point lead going into injury time was brought back a bit closer with a late goal for the West Cork men but the Killeagh-Itas men were to prevail on a score line of 3-10 to 1-10 and bring back the county minor ‘B’ football title to the club for the 2nd time. A young Brendan ‘Bugsy’ Barry was the star on show scoring 1-4 in that game.

DICK DOOCEY, RIP.
The word ‘Legend’ can be loosely thrown about when speaking about people. By God, the term ‘Legend’ will always stand beside the name of Dick Doocey. A man who lived until three days short of his 90th birthday (which incidentially is on Wednesday June 3rd), he was always a great thinker and ahead of his generation in so many ways. He contributed so much to the local Killeagh community for over 50 years while living here, his influence and knowledge was incredible.
It is our second Vice-President to leave these shores in exactly two months. Sean Murphy died March 31st while Dick Doocey died on May 31st. Two men who will not be forgotten from the parish. In next week’s notes, we plan to dedicate a full Tribute towards our Honorary Vice-President Dick Doocey. Our heartfelt condolences to his wife Carmel and to his family at this time.
CORONAVIRUS ROAD MAP RETURN
So hopefully by this time next week, we will be after moving into Phase 2 and on the road back towards some bit of normality, although then again what will be normal??
So, the five-phase road map plan will hopefully continue from next Monday June 8th as phase 2 will see exercise measures relaxed more, this time the distance travelled will be moved from 5km up to 20km. A small number of retail shops may open with the relevant social distancing. Phase 3 is scheduled to see certain Sports open behind closed doors. But it is Phase 4 (July 20th) where we will see the restart of GAA games (hopefully) where limited spectators may attend. Again, we will require more information on the matches from the Government & the GAA. And Phase 5 should see the rest of the economy reopening in full. All of the above with the implementation of Social Distancing all the while.
This is all with the caution of the virus remaining suppressed and hospitals figures decreasing all the while. This past week, there were more than 70 cases in Cork County. This needs to decrease dramatically locally.
We know the GAA have committed to running the club championships first but we await the details of timings etc. from the Management Committee shortly.
As the Irish proverb goes, “Ní neart go cur le chéile” (There is no strength without unity).
KILLEAGH HEALTHY CLUBS/SENIOR HURLING TEAM FUNDRAISER
Our senior Hurling panel completed their fundraiser on Monday June 1st which was raising money for the local Youghal Community Hospital, which has been serving our local community for many years.
As part of the fundraiser, the panel went on a 26-mile soloing marathon around the Killeagh Parish going through 50 townlands both north and south of the Village. We had so many people out supporting both young and old, it was a joy to see and watch as they joined in with the efforts of the team.
A huge thanks to the lads who togged out and gave up their time to walk, jog, run & even cycle the route. It will be well worth it in the long run.
And a word of well done to their Coach Colm Crowley who amassed 23 miles on his tour around the parish to raise money for the local charity, well done Colm!! I hope the feet were not too sore Monday night!! Our club has now transferred onto the new Smart Lotto system.
If you had tickets for upcoming draws on the old system, don’t worry, they are being automatically transferred to the new system for you.
The new system is different in that you can now add money to your ‘Smart Lotto account wallet’ and use this money to play Lotto over the following weeks whenever you wish.
This reduces banking charges & fees for you due to fewer card transactions & makes it easier for you to play the club lotto.

OFFICIAL GAA STATEMENT (29th May 2020)
The GAA continues to monitor closely the ongoing pandemic and the Government’s roadmap relating to the relaxation of restrictions.
The Association notes that we remain in Phase One and await an update about the possible move to Phase Two on June 8, as outlined by the authorities.
Should the country move to Phase Two as planned, GAA Clubs will be able to re-open designated walking tracks on June 8, subject to engagement with Croke Park around a facilities management plan.
We do not envisage a return to training in small groups in Phase Two and pitches and playing areas are to remain closed. However, as per the government roadmap, this may be reviewed in Phase Three.
The GAA can also confirm that it will publish its Return to Safe Activity Document when the government signals that the country has moved to the second phase of its plan.
This document will require approval from the government’s own expert group on Return to Sport, which we continue to work with. This group currently considers Gaelic games a ‘Phase 4’ sport.
Progress has also been made in re-configuring the 2020 GAA Kelloggs’ Cúl Camps and subject to the country moving onto the next phase of its recovery, we will provide more details about this initiative.
The GAA has stuck rigidly to the government’s plan and dates from the outset of this outbreak and will continue to do so, taking advice from medical experts and our own Advisory Committee.
We re-affirm our position that no one is keener to return to games and general games-related activity but this will only be considered when it is acceptable to do so to maximise the safety and well-being of our players, members and wider society.

#GAAPrimary Challenges
The #GAAPrimary Challenges is a series of learning & physical activities for children in Primary School. During these particularly challenging times for families, the #GAAPrimary Challenges are designed to help teachers and parents to work on the cross-curricular lesson plans with children to meet their learning needs. Gaelic games-themed lessons are across all curriculum subjects and are for children at every class level, based on the GAA Céim ar Aghaidh/Step Ahead resource. For some fresh air and physical exercise, inter-county stars set Skill Challenges weekly that can be done at or near your home. There are also fun competitions and prizes to be won on the @GAAlearning twitter page. Pitch Advice
Our pitches have seldom been quieter than they have been for the last two and a half months. However, when we do return, it’s likely they will be in high demand by various club teams.
Many clubs have been maintaining their playing facilities over the course of the pandemic.

Time Capsule
Amid all the stress and strain and sadness of these uncertain days there is also the realisation that these are historic times. In that vein, the GAA History Committee is encouraging clubs and counties to actively record the experience of clubs during this pandemic – for the benefit of future generations to review and learn from.
As Colin Regan, the GAA Community Manager, said: “When our games stopped, our people didn’t.” This is an opportunity to record and time capsule the work done by the GAA in our communities. Get thinking about those in your club who might be interested in documenting memories from this time for future members and keep an eye out for more on this in the time ahead.
Grassroots Club Stories Project
In the coming weeks, the GAA in association with Ballpoint Press Ltd, will launch a project to try and capture engaging and amusing stories from around our wider club network, both at home and abroad.
It is planned to publish the stand-out stories that are collected in a new book and all stories recorded will be added to the GAA archive at Croke Park.
The intention is to capture part of our shared folklore through stories that may be well known in given localities but not to wider audiences. Look out for more information in the coming weeks.
Fundraising
Many of our units will face challenges in the coming months after the long closure. A large number of our clubs have been involved in incredible fundraising initiatives since the outbreak of the pandemic built around sporting endeavours, including long distance team cycling and running.
Might some of these same initiatives be re-purposed by members to raise funds for our clubs?
Other opportunities which will present themselves in the weeks ahead should include the return of our Club Lottos and the annual GAA National Club Draw.

Activities at Home
For both younger and older kids, we’re creating lots to keep everyone occupied. From weekly activity packs for juvenile members, to information on organising online sessions and learning-focused Primary School activities, the Activities at Home section of GAA has lots available for you to share with your members. Organising Online Exercise and Coaching Sessions The temporary postponement of our games and training sessions has undoubtedly impacted on many of us including our underage teams and the children and young people in our clubs, i.e. those under 18 years of age and their families.
It is however always gratifying to hear of coaches and clubs who have recently contacted us seeking permission during these restricted times to deliver live online exercise and coaching sessions for our underage teams. With the correct safety guidance and good practices in place, we wish to support such initiatives.
In the downloads section of this page you will find protocols around organising these sessions, outlining the safeguards that must be adhered to when staging this type of activity and a guide to using ‘Microsoft Teams’, an online collaboration tool which is available to holders of official GAA email addresses and can be used to organise club activities with members.

CORK GAA STATEMENT (22nd May 2020)
Firstly, on behalf of Coiste Chontae Chorcaí, we hope that you and your families are safe and well despite the obvious challenges which you are all facing currently.
We understand the frustration of members at present, but urge all to continue to comply with Government and GAA restrictions.
This circular is in response to a few queries from clubs recently and is obviously sent while recognising that changes may occur in the future. If changes follow, we will continue to keep you up-to-date.
The statements in bold have been included in correspondence from Croke Park previously.
“On the games front, the GAA has confirmed that no official on-field activity will resume before July 20th and our facilities will remain closed until that date.
The maintenance of facilities can continue while adhering to the guidelines and as of May 18th construction work on our grounds is also permitted and clubs should liaise with their County Committees on this issue.”
As per the communication from Croke Park above, please note that GAA facilities remain closed, apart from maintenance works and the completion of construction works that have received permission from Croke Park / County Committee.
Therefore, clubs are asked to continue to prevent any playing activity on GAA facilities taking place. We are grateful for the continued contribution of club officers in this regard.
Maintenance can continue provided;
· The persons undertaking the works should as far as possible be the usual person designated to undertake such work at the club
· All persons undertaking works must be informed of the HSE advises re social distancing and they have to confirm they are not sick and not under any restrictions that would prevent them working as per advises from health officials. Posters / information advises should be in place at the club. These were included with previous communications and are available on https://www.hse.ie/eng/services/news/newsfeatures/covid19-updates/partner-resources/
· Social distancing and other advises from HSE must be adhered to
· Equipment should only be used by designated persons and will need additional cleaning after each use by the designated person. PPE must not be shared and should be cleaned after use
Clubs might also need to conduct security checks on the property and water systems may require flushing to prevent legionella.
If the persons who regularly do this work are unavailable and somebody else needs to take on these duties the club will need to ensure these persons are competent to undertake the tasks. In the event of an accident the GAA club will be considered to be their employer from a liability point of view and is thus legally responsible for ensuring that the persons undertaking such tasks are competent to do so.
In relation to CE Scheme Workers any decision for them to return to work is in the hands of their Sponsor Group and Local Supervisor and they also need to adhere to social distancing and HSE guidelines.
“The GAA Player Injury Scheme will remain closed until an official return to activity is confirmed.”
Please remind all members that organised training is not permitted and that there is no player injury cover in place. Therefore, it is totally forbidden for any team management to engage in any organised sessions with their players.
Of course, if players are availing of the various coaching videos circulating on various platforms currently, this is to be encouraged, once it is clear that they do so in a personal capacity and not as part of a formal team programme.
“No official on-field activity will resume before July 20th. We do not expect any inter-county championship games before October 1st”.
The Cork County CCC are currently are currently examining revised competition schedules for games. That information will be shared when those arrangements are finalised and we have clarity around return-to-play timelines. Any changes to existing championship structures will require the approval of the County Committee.

Allowing for the complexities associated with the current situation, the GAA continues to plan for the staging of this year’s Kellogg’s Cúl Camps and will communicate any changes to this approach with our clubs if they arise.

COVID-19 HEALTH GUIDELINES
With the GAA announcing that all GAA units are shut down until July 20th, we at Páirc Uí Chinnéide remain closed as do Headquarters in Croke Park still remain closed which means that no GAA, Camogie or LGFA activities shall take place for the foreseeable future. We ask all members of the public to respect this instruction. While we have no members on the premises, we are carrying out essential work around the grounds to improve our facilities. Through these times, please take note of the following points that should be noted by all members;
1. All training, team gatherings & meetings remain suspended until July 20th.
2. A directive from Croke Park states that "Club gyms are to be closed and access suspended". Therefore, our Gym will be closed until further notice. Please respect this directive.
3. To minimise the risk of the Coronavirus spreading, our club shop will remain closed until further notice.
4. Please follow all guidelines issued to the public by Government and HSE and especially those on hand washing, hygiene and social distancing both indoors and outdoors.
5. Our walkway & all facilities at Páirc Uí Chinnéide are currently closed, we would ask all members from all clubs to adhere to this directive from GAA HQ.
6. Please offer appropriate support to your neighbours, elderly people & those at risk in our community - checking in with a regular phone call is a good way to do this or helping them by purchasing their shopping during the week.

CLUB TOGETHER KILLEAGH GAA
The 'Club Together' initiative in association with Centra and Super Valu continues this week. A freephone 1800 number for people to use from Cork County Council 1800 805 819 with the lines open from 8AM to 8PM seven days a week. In the absence of the number, and even when it is in use, people in our community can make direct contact from today with Ray Rochford on 087-2330054 to request help with shopping or other necessary support.
Ray will link volunteers with those requiring help in their own local area to limit travel & to keep a personal connection with people you know. Please don't hesitate to ask for help, we have many volunteers ready to assist. Please spread the word which is supported by the Killeagh-Inch COVID-19 Action Group.
STRONGER TOGETHER: KILLEAGH-INCH COVID-19 ACTION GROUP 2020
We are a voluntary support group that have come together to help in the Killeagh/Inch area. Our purpose is to help any individual/ family in the area who can’t leave their home for any reason to access things like shops, pharmacies or even to walk your dog.
It doesn’t matter to us if you are: self-isolating, have the virus or are just afraid to go out under these circumstances – it is none of our business! We will be taking our own precautions to protect ourselves and you.
Once your shopping is done, if you know anyone on the list and would prefer them to deliver your shopping that can be requested too and we will do our best to accommodate that where possible.

The Killeagh GAA Lotto Jackpot on the rise...
The latest club draw took place on Tuesday 26th of May. Last week’s Lotto Jackpot was €7,000. The numbers drawn on the night were 9, 13, 24 & 30. We had no winner of this week’s jackpot. The €30 Lucky Dip winners drawn were Donie Fitzgerald & Phyl Kearney, while the €30 voucher for Barry’s Nurseries, Killeagh was won by Michael Cowhig & the €30 voucher for Joe's Farm Crisps, Killeagh was won by Orla Irwin. Well done to all!

KILLEAGH GAA GOLF SOCIETY:
With the Government Roadmap in place and with consultation of West Waterford Golf Club, we have decided to postpone of Annual Golf Classic until September 3rd, 4th & 5th 2020. Please take note of this and spread the word! This is a tough decision for us all but the right one especially with the current conditions we are in. One thing for sure, as our playing time will be slightly more limited than our annual fixture in July, it is important for teams to book themselves onto the timesheet early.
We are seeking Major Sponsors to help us proceed with the Annual Golf Classic for 2020! Remember we had 147 teams last year which saw over 400 people play throughout the event and the advertising prior to the event also! Or if you want to sponsor one of the biggest three-day amateur Golf Classics around, you can book a Classic Sponsorship or a Tee Box Sponsorship through Ray on 087-2330054 who has further details.
With the golf courses open and everyone adhering to social distance measures, there were big numbers out taking to the courses locally. We ask all our members to please keep adhering to their relevant club guidelines & protocols regarding Social Distancing, Hand Sanitizers, Local Club rules etc. These are important times to support the clubs in their return to action. Be safe and sensible and enjoy the next few weeks.
Unfortunately, Society & Open Competition Golf will not return until June 29th at earliest. Therefore, we have been forced into re-fixing some outings for the year ahead.
Therefore, our rescheduled day out to West Waterford Golf Club for the Margaret Rochford & Tom Fitzgibbon Charity Day is to be rescheduled for later in the year & our first Golfer of the Year outing to Youghal Golf Club has also been postponed until further notice.
Our 2nd round of the Golfer of the Year competition was due to be held in Lismore. Unfortunately, this event has now been postponed.
Our Tuesday outing to Cork Golf Club last Tuesday April 21st has been postponed until next year, Tuesday April 20th 2021, certainly a date for the diary!! Our latest fixtures were scheduled to be at Douglas Golf Club on May 21st and to Fermoy Golf Club on May 26th, but both of these have been postponed.
But we hope to have a quick start from June 29th with a number of fixtures which we hope to confirm in the coming week and will be published in next week’s notes.
Looking back through the faded pages of history, we discovered this beauty! Our first outing took place in Youghal Golf Club on Friday 24th of April 1992. Remarkably, the time sheet from that outing is still in existence, courtesy of Ray Rochford which was found during the week. The prize giving took place in Tattans pub later that evening. This was a revolutionary idea development at the time as it brought
many people to the local establishment within the village. It was done on the proposal of our first Captain Sean Treacy. Many golf societies have since copied, but we will still claim outright honours!!

CORK GAA CLUBS DRAW
The 2019/20 Cork Clubs draw for June will take place in Páirc Uí Rinn at the latter end of the month where the top prize is €20,000 Cash three times over for the three months!!

One of the aspects of the Healthy Clubs Initiative in Killeagh is our walking group. The walks vary hugely and are suitable for all fitness levels. We have had some great family outings including walking the Atlantic Pond (Mahon, Cork), Glenbower Woods, Beach walks and more recently Spike Island. Lots of the
walks are local and we have had very pleasant trips to Lismore, Knockadoon Cliff Walk and a historic walk of Cork City followed by breakfast.
