CLUB COVID-19 UPDATE

While daily Covid case numbers are dropping, we are nowhere close to where we need to be. So, we ask you not to drop your guard. Let’s finish out the job at hand and get it down to low as possible. Therefore, we ask all members to be cautious at all times going forward and remember to keep your Social Distance, wear a clean face covering where possible, wash your hands regularly & reduce your social contacts where possible to an absolute minimum.

Remember, we all have a personal responsibility in an effort to reduce Covid-19 so play your part in the local community and you should protect yourself and everyone around you.

We, at Killeagh GAA club repeat our call for anyone in our community, especially the elderly or those loving alone, who needs assistance with shopping, household help or just a chat with someone over the phone, please contact in confidence Ray Rochford 087-2330054 or Colman Motherway 085-7540973 who will try to arrange appropriate support for you.

A reminder to all our members and supporters that both the Main Pitch & Clashdermot Pitch are currently CLOSED due to maintenance repairs. If someone needs to go running or have a kick/puck around, please use the Glenbower (Training) Pitch. If you are walking around our walkway, please remember to keep the Main Pitch on your left-hand side walking in an anti-clockwise direction.

Finally, while we are delighted that many people and families are using Pairc Ui Chinneide for exercise during the current restrictions, we must ask that NO DOGS are allowed onto the grounds, for reasons of health and safety of all users. Go raibh milé maith agaibh.

One lucky winner will win the top prize of €100,000 later this year!!

Tickets are now on sale for the newly revamped Cork Clubs Draw, now called “Rebels’ Bounty”. A new fundraising initiative by Cork GAA designed to support Cork players, clubs and county. The initiative offers a spectacular total prize fund of €500,000, with one lucky club member set to win €100,000.

In every draw, there are 30 cash prizes, ranging from €100 to €20,000. In April and August, the top prize will increase to €25,000 while in December, the bumper prize of €100,000 will be given away. The first draw is due to take place on Thursday March 25th where prizes will be drawn for the months of January, February & March and there is over €100,000 up for grabs alone on the night!

Tickets for the 12 draws cost €100 for the year (or little over €8 per month). Remember, the more tickets our club sells, the more development we can do in the future in Páirc Uí Chinnéide for all in our community.

Tickets for the Rebels’ Bounty are being distributed via any member of the executive committee, club officer or through our club co-ordinator for the draw, Dave Barry on 087-8123352. For information, please visit www.gaacork.ie/rebelsbounty or contact any committee member.

GAA CONGRESS

GAA Congress took place virtually last Saturday and saw Dubliner John Horan step aside after completing his three-year term as GAA President and is going to be occupied by Cork man representing New York Larry McCarthy as the first ever Overseas representative to hold the highest office within the Association. We wish Larry the very best going forward for his three year tenure.

As for business on the day, it is well documented that there were 48 motions for Congress, ten of those have been deferred until an In-Person Congress is possible and that the other 38 motions were all passed which included two votes. One vote on the Cynical fouling in hurling inside the 20 metre line which results in a penalty & a sin-bin for the offending player was passed 61%-39%.

While the other vote was on Senior club Championships to be a maximum of 16 teams, this was passed 66%-34%. The Split Season motion was passed by acclaim so for the GAA Season 2022 we will have a defined season going forward with dates. It should be mentioned that Cork was represented on the day by Cork Central Council Delegate, our very own Tracey Kennedy. Here is to the 2021 season full of games getting under sooner rather than later.

HEALTHY CLUB ‘EVERY STEPS COUNT’ CLUB CHALLENGE FINISHES THIS WEEK

The GAA Healthy Club ‘Every Step Counts’ Challenge in partnership with Irish Life’s MyLife App is concluding this Wednesday March 3rd. Our club has walked over 4,300 miles so far which has been registered. While the weather is good over the next couple of days, why not put in some miles to help us over the 4,500 miles mark.

Download the ‘Irish Life – My Life’ App, link it to your smart watch or record the steps on your mobile device and take off walking over next three days.

UPCOMING EVENTS POSTPONED

As you can imagine, a various number of events have to be postponed or cancelled over the coming weeks. The Annual Killeagh Healthy Clubs 4 Mile Road Race has been cancelled for early March due to current state of the pandemic. We hope to possibly re-organize this later in the year pending on the status of the pandemic.

Also, on an annual basis in February we host our Registration Day. But once again this has gone by the way side and is postponed until further notice. The club will not seek membership until training recommences. But if you do wish to pay your membership for the 2021 season, you can drop it in one of our Lotto Boxes in Londis or Centra and marking your name and attention of Membership on the envelope or you can log onto returntoplay.gaa.ie, register on the ‘Foireann’ portal and fill out the appropriate details from there.

HURLING HELMET SAFETY

In advance of the 2021 GAA season, players are reminded about the need to check that their equipment is in good condition and meets the required safety standards.

The GAA would like to remind all players at all levels in all Hurling Games and Hurling Practice Sessions it is mandatory for, and the responsibility of, each individual player to wear a helmet with a facial guard that meets the standards set out in IS:355 or other replacement standard as determined by the National Safety Authority of Ireland (NSAI).

All players are advised that in the event of a head injury occurring, if the helmet being worn does not meet the standard or is modified or altered from the original manufactured state, they are not covered under the terms of the GAA Injury Benefit Fund.

The following helmet manufacturers currently provide products which meet the standards set out in IS:355 or other replacement standard as determined by the National Safety Authority of Ireland (NSAI).

· Atak Sports

· Azzuri

· Cooper.ie

· Marc Sports

· Mycro

· O’Neills

Players and parents should note that not all products provided by some of these manufacturers meet the standards of IS:355.

Once the helmet or faceguard is modified in anyway, the player is playing at an increased risk of injury and not covered under the terms of the GAA Injury Benefit Fund.

Go Raibh Milé maith agaibh.

COACHING AND SAFEGUARDING COURSES

Ahead of the 2021 season start, we will be contacting the respective coaches/mentors who need to attend training in time, but for the moment we ask that ALL COACHES should start or complete the mandatory online E-Vetting process. You can do this by logging onto gaa.ie, search for the E-Vetting section and complete the necessary steps as outlined. We need these completed before we return to the green fields of Páirc Uí Chinnéide. Online E-Vetting Course available on March 4th. If you have a query on the above subject, please contact the GAA Children’s Officer Grainne Fitzgerald on 087-6290214 or email childrensofficer.killeagh.cork@gaa.ie

Regarding Coaching, there is an online Foundation course being run by Cork GAA Games Development Officer, Sean Crowley in the next few weeks. It covers the Theory section of the course, the practical end will be completed once safe to do so upon lifting of the restrictive measures. You will also have to do child welfare course if not already done in order to receive a certificate. This is a good opportunity to get this complete prior to the season start in the coming weeks or months. Please contact Sean via email at sean.crowley.gda.cork@gaa.ie ASAP to book your place.

KILLEAGH GAA GOLF SOCIETY:

Hopefully, we will be able to give out a schedule of events for 2021 over the coming weeks but there will be some events that will need some changing of dates, which are being worked on in the background pending on relevant Government Announcements. We were hoping to have our first outing of the new year towards the end of March, but this will have to be postponed until a later date. We will advise of a new schedule at a later date.

One thing is for certain, our Annual three-day Killeagh GAA Golf Classic is scheduled from Thursday July 8th to Saturday July 10th at West Waterford Golf Club. If you are interested in playing in the three-day extravaganza, the good advice is to contact Ray Rochford ASAP to get your optimum timeslot.
