Lisgoold GAA Notes.

Maurice Mulcahy PRO

A hectic week took place for all the gaels in the parish. The harriers just came up short in their push for promotion to division three in the imokilly hurling league. Whilst its out of their hands they can still qualify but it’s an absolute lottery in how that will pan out. The first team hurlers continue their journey to division three with an away assignment versus Ballinhassig in the RedFM hurling league. The footballers signed off their football league campaign with an impressive away win in Castlemartyr to seal third place in the league. Leamlara NS fell short in a classic of a scaith ns scol final vs Watergrasshill NS. The under 14 hurlers were victorious in their league final vs Aghada. However, main stage for this weekend will be at intercounty level, with the Cork hurlers in a shooutout versus Limerick this weekend. Next weekend we see our own Diarmuid Healy will be lining out with the Cork under 20’s in the all-Ireland final vs Offaly. Also, Dara Kiniry will be togging out with the Cork senior ladies’ footballers in the Munster final vs Kerry on the 28th May in Mallow. The best of luck to all.

Midleton         0-17 (17)

At Midleton

May 17th 2023

In what was an open, free-flowing, spirited game last week, the harriers just fell short by a single point. The ground was in splendid nick and with weather conditions favouring hurling, the strong crowd that turned up to the ground, were treated to a spectacle. A lightening start for the blue and gold as Luke Walsh stormed Lisgoold into an early lead with some fabulous long-range points. The magpies were quick to fight back with scores of their own. Brian O’Sullivan and Alex Howard were very efficient for the hosts as they put on some excellent scores for the hosts. Coming to the end of the first quarter it was 0-5 apiece. Cian Healy Noel O’Driscoll, Sean Coleman and Luke Walsh were playing excellent in defence whilst Piaras, Oran, Jamie and Learai stood out in attack for the blue and gold. Midleton had opened a two-point gap on the 20th minute (0-8 to 0-6) when uncharacteristic slip by full back Cian allowed Midleton in but Jonathon Kelleher came in across with a wonderful defensive block to prevent a major from being scored. From here on Midleton took over and had (probably should have been more to be honest) a healthy lead coming at the short whistle. It was 0-11 to 0-7 to the hosts.

In the second half the management became more daring and made some brave tactical and positional switches to support our attack that bit more. The magpies however had this game by the scruff of the neck and with some excellent free taking by Nicky Hayes, Dan Cagney and shots from the potent Howard eased themselves into a five-point lead with twenty minutes to go (0-14 to 0-9). It felt like the writing was on the wall but to the lad’s credit, changes that were made at half time began to take shape. With Adian Power switched to full back, Moss O’Connell coming on the wing, allowing Luke Walsh and Cian Healy more freedom to roam forward. This even led to Cian scoring an excellent point from play and slowly but surely, they had whittled down Midleton’s lead to two with ten minutes to go. The last ten minutes was just frantic as Lisgoold created chance after chance to get ahead of the hosts, but a mixture of great defending coupled with very poor decision making/ leadership by some of the more experienced heads in our team prevented us from getting ahead.

This though made it quite exciting as we entered injury time, we were a single point behind and were chasing Midleton down. We were offered one last opportunity by referee David Butler (who was quite excellent over the hour) to equalize - this fell to Piaras but unfortunately it drifted wide, and the magpies won by the bare minimum. It was a superb game and to be honest Midleton for sheer consistency in their play and calmness at the end deserved the win. We could only look back as a missed opportunity as too many wides were registered and some of our more experienced players were virtually absent for the entire hour which didn’t help our cause at all.

This concludes their league campaign and whilst ends on a loss they can look back on a very successful campaign. Three excellent wins coupled with a close defeat, an unfortunate walkover and a very controversial draw meant that the harriers can be satisfied with their league season. Championship for them begins in ten weeks’ time, there made be a league final to play (and more importantly promotion) but now it’s complete out of their hands. They will have to wait and see if their league campaign for 2023 has one last chapter.

Lisgoold          1-16 (19)

Castlemartyr    2-7 (13)

At Castlemartyr

May 18th 2023

In a delayed start by forty minutes due to officials not being available we were grateful for David Butler from Carrigtwohill club to fall in at such short notice. This does highlight the need for referees and the mass shortage of them across the county. If anyone who has in interest in helping do contact any club officer and we be willing to put your name forward to a ref’s course. It is a tough job but rewarding and hopefully incidents may be rare in the future long-term but for the short term unfortunately this may be more occurring.

Anyway, when it got going, we eventually saw a swashbuckling performance last Thursday night as the footballers ended their campaign on a high after a fantastic six point away win over a very gallant Castlemartyr side. Despite a very bright start, when both teams played some fine attacking football. We could not get ahead of the hosts. Some good scores by John Cash, Mark Hegarty coupled with great work by Bill, Bear and young O’Driscoll meant we were a match for the hosts.

However, we were soon to kick on and open a gap. Like the previous home match against Carrignavar, we got on top in the second quarter and moved into a great lead at the half time whistle. Some fantastic teamwork led by marvellous point taking saw us sore to a lead of 0-10 to 0-5. The key moment came in the 27th minute in which Castlemartyr plundered for goal from the penalty spot. Spot kick was correctly awarded by the referee, Jack McGann's very well struck penalty was their last score in this first half. Whilst it did reduce the gap to just two points, Lisgoold responded instantly with a goal and a point to build up a healthy interval advantage. Full forward Cathal hickey proving to be an excellent attacking asset whilst showing some wonderful core rugby skills raised our only major of the night.

In the second half Castlemartyr surged back with McGann contributed a point with Jamie Stack, Mike Cosgrave and Darragh Joyce also playing well for the hosts. However, once John Cashman edged Lisgoold back ahead on the 48th minute, Lisgoold seemed to kick on and they carried plenty of threat going forward in wonderful display of football. We saw our lead go to 1-15 to 1-6. John Cronin, Luke Walsh, Shaun Murphy and Cian Scannell played very well whilst Wayne Kingston was superb in goals and may have thrown his hat in the ring for the No.1 Jersey. We closed out the game and our campaign with a few more scores to win by six points.

This was a great team performance which showed their capabilities that they can mix it with the best and considering only for a small slip-up vs Aghada they were in contention of a league final. All eyes are now on the championship summer ahead and the three group games, which begin against Glenbower Rovers in Dungourney on Saturday June 17th. Six teams will advance to the knockout stages, with the best two group winners going directly to the semi-finals. On this display and with a bit of encouragement and determination they can make great strides in this year’s championship.

Panel: Wayne Kingston, Noel O’Driscoll, Shaun Murphy Jason Hegarty, Mark Hegarty, John Cashman, James O’Driscoll, John Cronin, Cian Scannell, Sean Coleman, Caolan O’Brien, Kieran Cashman, Cormac Hallahan, Cathal Hickey, Bill Whelan.

Substitutes: Luke Walsh, Caomhan O’Se, Johnathan Kelleher

Scorers: John Cashman 0-4 (0-2f), Mark Hegarty 0-4, Sean Murphy 0-3, Cathal Hickey 1-0, Cormac Hallahan, Cian Scannell 0-2 each, James O’Driscoll 0-1.

State of Play

We finished up with third place in division one football. The hurlers have three rounds left in the RedFM division 4 league, there is an outside chance of promotion, but we are dependent on other results going our way. They will need to win their last three games to have any chance of qualification. The harriers had promotion to division three in Imokilly in their hands but now are hoping on a wing and a prayer for results to go their way to get them over the line.

Lisgoold                      5-11 (26)

Kildorrery                  0-9 (9)

At Lisgoold

21st May 2023

Bright and early last Sunday morning (9.30am in fact!!), our junior team played Kildorrery at pairc Liosgcul. Fielding a very strong team, Lisgoold started the strongest and some great play from Dara Kiniry, Kelly McCann and Rachel Barry coupled with great play from Sinead O’Brien, Leanne Woods and Julieanne Stack we led by twelve points at half time. In the second half we saw Lisgoold make some changes, but it didn't affect their momentum at all and finished the game convincing winners on a scoreline of 5-11 to 9 points. Emma Murphy was the standout player for the whole game, she had the task of marking their strongest player and was outstanding for the full hour. Well done ladies keep it going.

Scorers: Dara Kiniry 3-4, Molly Carroll 1-1, Juileanne Stack 0-3, Leanne Woods 1-0, Aoibhe Savage, Sinead O’Brien, Ciara Power 0-1 each.

U10

Well done to all the girls this morning. You played 4 fantastic games. Some great skill on show.

U12

Our U12's travelled to Cloyne on Saturday morning looking to build on their strong start to the league. On an eerily quiet Old Pitch our girls started off against Cloyne as they finished against Na Piarsaigh, first to most balls, passing well, using the open spaces, and taking their scores when the chance came.

Captain on the day Sarah Heron started the scoreboard ticking over with a well taken point after just a few few minutes. With Aoife O'Connell and Ruth Kelly playing very well in midfield there was no shortage of supply into the forwards and points were to follow from Ellen Heaphy, Amber Bridgeman, Ruth and Aoife, and another from Sarah Heron. Two goals from Niamh Hutchinson and another from Amber put us in a strong position heading for the half-time break but our defence was facing a tougher test in the second half.

To Cloyne's credit they came out fighting for the second half and made a real game of it. Kate Flavin, having been solid at centre back in the first half, moved into goal for the second and had it not been for 2 or 3 good saves the final score could have been much closer. Kayla Burke also had a tougher task at full back in the second half but never gave the Cloyne forwards any easy possession, and with plenty of help from Alex Brady Sheehan, Ria O'Sullivan and the two Leah's - Cahill and Keegan, and Hope "Any Position on the Field" Sheridan, they were able to stifle a lot of Cloyne attacks and relieve the pressure on our goal. Ruth Kelly and Ruby Lennon with a couple of points each made sure we stayed out of reach of a Cloyne comeback.

Not unnoticed on the day were 2 players who didn't get on the scoresheet but playing in the forwards instead of their more familiar defensive positions, both Amelia Murphy and Lucy Stack impressed with their efforts. Lucy was very unlucky not to score a goal late on when the Cloyne goalkeeper made a very good save from a quick turn and shot. Amelia was constantly available and winning ball and rarely if ever gave away possession, with a few more games as a forward she will very likely start to become a regular name on the scoresheet.

A mention here for a few of our younger players. Sophie Stack, Hannah Barry and Amy M O Brien. Special mention also to Amy Mul, we can't wait to have you back after your injury. Our U12's had a great start to the league this morning with a win over Na Piarsaigh. Well done girls keep up the hard work.

Scaith Na Scol H3 Final

Leamlara NS               5-6 (21)

Watergrasshill NS       7-4 (25)

At Paric Ui Chaoimh

May 22nd 2023

There are some days in life in which you get to appreciate what you have. Hurling is marvellous game and once played correctly and in the right spirit you get something special. This came to light last Monday afternoon in Pairc Ui Chaoimh in which the hurlers of Leamlara NS & Watergrassshill NS played out a twelve-goal thriller. In a breath-taking display by both sides, from start to finish this was a game of skill, speed and braveness that was very fitting of the occasion.

The first half was a tight testy affair both sides were not willing to back down and both defences and attacks were stepping up to the mark. Leamlara had Sean Cullinane, Liam O’Dwyer and Cian O’Connell in defence whilst they were potent in attack with Kyle Murphy, Kai savage and Cian Landers coming to the fore. Watergrasshill had stars on this display as well with Sam O’Leary, Ronan Lehane, and Fionn Healy playing well for them. Early points were exchanged before the hill registered the first two goals of the game. There was a flurry of exchanges hooking and blocking on both sides, one of the key moments came when Hill were on the attack in the 17th minute. A wonderful goal line clearance from Sean Culliane was cleared but came out to Hill’s Sam O’Leary who let in an absolute rasper from Sam O’Leary which would have deceived Nicky Quaid never mind any other keeper. Leamlara responded Brilliantly and managed to close the gap to four points. At the short whistle it was 3-1 to 0-6 in favour of Watergrasshill.

The second half was twenty minutes of the most breath-taking display of hurling that most certainly this writer has ever seen. Full of skill passion determination and unlimited energy both sides just went at full tilt without it ever slowing down. The maddest period of this half was in the space of 135 seconds saw both sides score two goals each (with the hill adding a point). It was quite literally a hundred miles a hour as Leamlara threw everything at Watergrasshill to get level. The key moment in the whole came in the 15th minute of the half. Leamlara had a attack on the wing Adam Browne and Becky Murphy did excellent work to get the ball to the wonderful Kai Savage. He took his shot low and hard like any good forward is taught to do, however a simply marvellous save from Donagh McHugh ensued there wasn’t a green flag for the blue and gold. From this the Hill got another goal which made the score 6-2 to 2-6.

Leamlara didn’t buckle though and with the magnificent Kyle Murphy on the rampage managed to narrow the gap to three entering injury time. It was 5-6 to 7-3 Leamlara had Watergrasshill on the ropes however time was against them. The hill scored another point in injury time to seal the deal. It was simply a superb game. Whilst its extremely easy to give player of the match to any of the forwards, in ones view the man of the match was Donagh McHugh. Including his excellent save as forementioned in this report there was at least another four certain goals he stopped over the match and had Leamlara got ahead it most likely would have been a different result.

It was richly deserved win for the hill and tough pill for Leamlara to swallow. However, given the nature of the match unfolded and even though Watergrasshill won the day - it is safe to say the clubs of Lisgoold and Watergrasshill have a very bright future. This was an honour to report on this game and a privilege to watch it.

Panel: Cian O’Connell, Jack Barry, Killian O’Brien, Becky Murphy, Sean Cullinane, Odhran Collins, Liam O’Dwyer, Adam Browne, Kyle Carroll, Kyle Murphy, Cian Landers, Adam O’Brien, Kai Savage, Fintan Curtin, Lena Murray, Ruth Kelly, Liam Punch, Ryan Collins, Ryan Daly, Oliver Gaffney.

Scorers: Kyle Murphy 4-3, Kai Savage 1-1, Liam O’Dwyer 0-2
