JOHN ARNOLD PRO

RED CARPET HERE WE COME!

When we gathered in the Clubroom on Wednesday March the 8th little did we think what the next 11 weeks had in store for Club Members and the parish in general. It was on that Wednesday night that the idea of a Major Fundraiser for the Club’s Pitch Development Plans were outlined. The three main Club Officers along with Bridgee Forde and Evelyn Murphy had been looking at different schemes and in conjunction with Kevin Roe Events proposed The Night At The Oskars for Friday May 26th in The Rochestown Park Hotel. To be honest it deemed somewhat daunting on the night. Seven films were to be casted, rehearsed and filmed locally featuring Club members, players and friends and relations. Then we were told that each of the 7 casts  -The Field, Michael Collins, Sister Act Fr Ted, Braveheart, The Snapper and Bridesmaids would have to raise at least €3000 each. It seemed very daunting at the time!  On March 20th we had the casting night followed by the Official Launch on March 24th. Then on Monday March 27th the rehearsals commenced. That’s just seven weeks ago. In that period there’s been a huge number of ‘Fundraisers’ as each cast tried to raise the required sum -and more. The response from the wider parish Community has been only amazing. In truth the month of April and first week of May was like a massive Festival or Carnival.

UNDER 16 FOOTBALL.

Bride Rovers under 16’s Boys travelled to Pairc Naomh Caitrionaigh in Ballynoe to play St  Catherines on Sunday evening in a football league match. It was a perfect evening for football with weather and pitch brilliant. Our lads started well and played a lovely brand of passing football throughout the match. We got some nice scores in the oping period and a great goal put us well ahead. The half time score was Bride Rovers 1:6 Catherines 3 points, Catherines came out strongly in the second half scoring a goal and a point in the first ten minutes to make it 1 6 to 1 4-game on.  After this setback our lads kicked on winning on a score line Bride Rovers 3:11 St Catherines 1:6. Many thanks to our sponsor Fitzys Fast Food.. SENIOR HURLING LEAGUE.

We have three games left to play in our Division 2 League Campaign against the Glen, the Barrs and Courceys. On Friday week 2nd June the match v Courcey Rovers takes place in Ballinspittle at 7.45pm.

 UNDER 7’s AT HOME.

Our 7s were in action at home last weekend. They  played a football blitz against neighbours Glenville in Pynes last Saturday morning.  In perfect weather conditions  the contest was mighty. There was great skill on show from both sides for such a young age group.

SO NEAR AND YET SO FAR IN ENNIS.

In the pitch named after GAA Founder, Michael Cusack from Carron in West Clare,  the Bannermen and Rebels played out a super game last Sunday. It’s many years now since Anthony Daly said ‘Clare were no longer the whipping boys of Munster hurling’-how true that was! In the last quarter century Clare have ‘taken their place among the hurling nations of the world’ and on Sunday they were terrific. It was ding dong battle that could have gone either way but Clare prevailed by a single point to copper fasten a Munster Final spot.   Cork played brilliantly on the day -normally scoring three goals would be a guarantee of success but nowadays hurling is such a high scoring game that winning tight games is hard. Brian Roche was outstanding, contributing two points and being involved in more scores and his work rate was outstanding. So now it’s down to the wire as Cork head to the Gaelic Grounds on the Ennis Road in Limerick on Sunday next.  It’s the last chance saloon for both Cork and Limerick as the winners march on and the vanquished are out of the Championship.  Limerick are still the All Ireland Champions so the Rebels know what’s expected of them. Amazingly both sides have the same record in Munster this year -beating Waterford, losing to Clare and playing a drawn game v Tipperary. It should be a cracker of a match. Good luck to Brian, Eoin and all the wearers of the Blood and bandage.

UNDER 13’s IN BOTH CODES.

Our under 13s had two games this week to finish out the hurling and football leagues.  On Tuesday evening we travelled to Cloughduv for our last hurling game. In a classic game of two halves we came up short by a point. Bride Rovers 1-8 Cloughduv 1-9. Although being down 7 points at half-time, the second half performance made the result less important.  The huge effort, skill and work rate sets us up for the league final against Eire Og in a few weeks. Ell done lads on getting to the Final.

Our final football league game was Saturday evening in Pynes Field against Ballycastle Gaels.  Both teams hadn't any success in the league up to this point. Anxious for a win  you could see from the throw in both teams wanted to finish on a high. A very competitive game followed with both teams getting some impressive team scores. Eleven goals and  thirteen points were scored in a great game. At the final whistle we were up by 4 points. Bride Rovers 6-7 Ballycastle 5-6.

UNDER 12’s I N LOCAL DERBY.

Bride  Rovers u12’s played St Catherines in their 3rd league game in Pàirc na Brìde  on Monday night . The lads have been working very hard at training and the performances so far in the league have shown this.

Going into last Monday  night’s game we were prepared for a tough battle against a strong St Catherines team. The game started very tight with both teams battling hard for possession but we were more clinical with our finishing and went in at the halftime break leading 1.8 to 0.1

The lads continued to press hard in the 2nd half and following the advice at halftime were passing the sliothar faster and accurately which help them to finish out winners on a scoreline of 3.12 to 0.2

Well done to the lads on another great performance and we look forward to our final hurling league game on the 19th against Watergrasshill.

Best of luck to the Bride Rovers boys playing with Scoil Bride, Rathcormac in the final of Sciath na Scol in Pairc ui Chaoimh on Thursday throw in at 1.45

DOUBLE HEADER ON SUNDAY WEEK.

Sunday week June 4th should see a bumper crowd in Thurles with two All Ireland Finals. Neighbours Clare and Galway meet in the Minor Final. After this game Cork and Offaly meet in the under 20 decider. Injury kept Cillian Tobin out of the side against Clare in the Munster Final. We wish Cillian and Ronan O Connell and Cork the very best.

FRIDAY NIGHT -GALA NIGHT.

Back in the early years of the Club a fundraising Draw was held with a Goose as first prize! Changed times these days as we embark on a project to develop three more pitches. The total cost will be in the region of €750,000 so it’s obvious why we needed a major income earning idea.  Friday night in Rochestown Park Hotel will see the culmination of a huge effort over recent months. The work put into rehearsals, filming and fundraising has been stunning. Between cast members, extras, helpers and production teams well over 250 people have been involved. It’s been some few weeks for everyone concerned and the buzz all over the place has been superb. Friday night promises to be a massive night of fn and craic. True Oskars and Golden Globes  are on offer for Best Film, Best Grossing Film, Best Actor & actress etc but in reality everyone that’s been involved is winner.  It’s been a fun and laughter filled journey and what was marvellous was the cooperation between all the various Cast members- all for the good of Bride Rovers. The starting time on Friday night is 8pm with doors open well before that. The style will be mighty and I’d say the girls will be well dressed too! On the night patrons can cast their votes for the best film but strictly no canvassing is allowed! It is also hoped to livestream the event for those unable to attend

HEALTHY CLUB-CPR & DEFRIBILATOR TRAINING.

Bride Rovers are delighted to be able to offer a 2-hour CPR & AED short session on Saturday June 10th. Given their involvement with our teams, club mentors will be given priority but it is anticipated that there will be space for further members and supporters to attend on the day also. The course involves familiarisation in Adult & Child CPR Use of AED Choking,  Difference between Cardiac Arrest & Heart attack. The Course is Non-certified as it a relatively short familiarisation session. Limited places, 16 per session. 1st come will have choice of times in the 5 sessions between 9am and 5pm

Tadgh Donovan RIP.     The whole community was saddened last week when we heard of the death of Tadgh Donovan of Kilbrien, Rathcormac. Though Tadgh had been in and out of hospital with health problems over the years his death really came as a shock. So often in the last three decades Tadgh was seriously ill but always battled through but this time it just didn’t happen.  A strongly built man with a steely determination Tadgh proudly wore the Bride Rovers jersey. He played both coded but excelled as a footballer and was a key member of our 1981 East Cork Junior B Grade Championship winning side. That team brought the first Adult Football title back to the parish since 1889. Tom Kearney captained the side that beat Youghal in the Final and Tadgh gave some sterling displays during that season. He played A grade football the following year and hurling on occasions. He was an outstanding sportsman and excelled also in tug o war. His ability to recall team lineouts from games down the years as uncanny. Though battling ill health with years Tadgh never complained, was always positive and optimistic. A great neighbour and a loyal friend Tadgh will be sadly missed by his brother and sisters and his adoring nephews and nieces. We extend our deepest sympathy to the Donovan family and all of Tadgh’s relations. May he rest in peace. Truly it can be said of Tadgh ‘ He was one of the best and we wont see his likes again’. Bride Rovers also extend our sympathy to the family of Paddy (Paddy Mac) McCarthy of Belvelly, Cobh who died last week. Paddy was the father of Councillor Noel McCarthy and grandfather of Ross who played for the Rovers. May he rest in peace.

The three main Club Officers along with Bridgee Forde and Evelyn Murphy had been looking at different schemes and in conjunction with Kevin Roe Events proposed The Night At The Oskars for Friday May 26th in The Rochestwn Park Hotel.

PANEL;  James Larkin , Eanna Lyons, Darragh Delaney ,Tomas o Riordan, David o Connell, Cormac Barry, Shane o Dowd ,Sean Dowling  ,Gearoid o Connell  ,Connor o Riordan,  Jack Hynes,  Owen Buckley,  David Cash,  Shane Prendergast,  Jack Mannix,  Jack Collins, Ronan Barry,  James Finn.

It was ding dong battle that could have gone either way but Clare prevailed by a single point to copperfasten a Munster Final spot.
