Imokilly Division 1 Football League

Lisgoold 1-8 (8)

Aghada 1-8 (8)

At Rostellan

March 12th 2023

The first team footballers unbeaten run continues but they came up just fell short in their quest to obtain the maximum points in a wet and windy rostellan pitch last Sunday afternoon. Given the strength of the hosts and their tradition in football this was always going to be a tough dogged affair. Kevin McCarthy (our coach for the season) had picked a strong enough side for the match although he was missing a few regulars due to injuries and lads being on tour. The opening exchanges were hard but fair as both sides sought to gain the early advantage. Jason Hegarty, Cathal Cashman and James O’Driscoll were playing well for us and Lisgoold obtained the first major in the match. After 16 minutes a long ball pumped into the square from Midfield saw Caomhán with a salmon like leap get to it ahead of the Aghada keeper and fisted it into the net. A continuation of his good form lately which is great to see. It seemed that momentum was with our lads as they piled on the pressure, but the hosts fought back and within a few minutes got a major of their own after our defence fouled one of their forwards in the small square and a penalty was awarded to Aghada. This was dispatched although our custodian between the sticks (Ciarán) got a hand to the ball – it still got there. They tacked on another point and coming to half time whistle we were the solitary point behind at 1-3 to 1-2.

After the half-time Jaffa the second half was a right dog fight. Points were traded and hits started to pile up as both teams fought validity to get ahead. Patience play from brothers John & Kieran Cashman coupled with an energetic O’Driscoll ensured Lisgoold always had chances available to them. As the match wore on chances were aplenty were had by both teams and a little bit of needle was creeping in as cards were flashed for both teams. One of the key moments of the game was a superb point blank save by our custodian Ciarán in the 52nd minute, in which with David De Gea like reflexes he diverted the ball out for a 45. Had it gone in Aghada were sure to win the game. It looked like Lisgoold were to come away with maximum points as John Cashman landed as superb long-range to edge Lisgoold by the slimmest of margins (1-8 to 1-7). However, in the dying ambers of the match, a small lapse of concentration allowed Aghada to attack our goal and with very little effort they manufactured a free on the twenty-yard line. This allowed the opportunity for Aghada’s Ray Savage who was a constant threat to Lisgoold to conjure the equalising point to make it honours even at the full-time whistle. It was a frustrating result for our lads as the margin of error in these games is tiny as they let slip the extra point. Although on the positive the result brings us another small step closer up to the top of the table. It’s onwards and upwards with the next match up being our first home game of the year vs Cloyne in two weeks’ time.
