BRIDE ROVERS GAA NOTES
SUPER HURLING WEEKEND
With dry weather and perfect pitches the 2023 Hurling Season really got underway in a major fashion last weekend. Only the first days of March yet playing surfaces were just superb which saw some brilliant hurling played. We had five games on our Agenda from Saturday to Monday and all went off well. Our three adult hurling teams were in action. This was a brilliant start to the playing year. In other years third and fourth teams might only begin their playing season in the month of May. This year the East Cork Board has outlined a great games programme for all teams so hopefully this will work well. Our under 18 hurlers played Carrigtwohill, away, on Saturday. On Sunday morning we hosted the 2022 East Cork Junior Hurling League final between Carrignavar and Cobh. At noon on Sunday our Senior Hurlers crossed camans with Fermoy in Fitzgerald park. Later on Sunday our third Junior team met Midleton in the East Cork Junior Hurling League Division 4. To complete a hectic few days our Junior A Hurlers made a return to Division 1 Hurling on Monday night, under lights, in Riverstown.

SENIORS WINNING START.
On Sunday last Bride Rovers Senior Hurlers made the short trip to Pairc MacGearailt in Fermoy for the opening round of the Red FM sponsored Division 2 Hurling League v Fermoy. It might have only been a League Game but with the ‘local derby’ nature of the match a huge crowd was present and Bartlemy, Rathcormac and Kildinan were well represented and in great vocal form. Fermoy opened the scoring with a pointed 65, but Jason Mannix on his return to the Rovers from his 2022 sojourn with Cloughduv levelled matters. The concession of some frees led to Fermoy opening up a 0-04 to 0-01 lead early on. Brian Roche got his first point of the game in the 10th minute and further points from Conleith Ryan and a free by Adam Walsh had the sides level again. Fermoy then hit four points without reply to lead 0-08 to 0-04 but the Rovers finished the half strongly with 2 pointed press from Adam Walsh, another point from Brian Roche and a point from Kieran Kearney had the sides all square as referee Aidan Hyland from Kilworth blew for half time -Fermoy 0 8, Bride Rovers 0 8. Fermoy had the first score of the second half, however points from Ronan O Connell, William Finnegan and Adam Walsh had the Rovers in front for the first time in the game 0-11 to 0-9. Fermoy drew level with pointed frees from Jake Carr. Both sides swapped points three more times with Adam Walsh scoring three frees. The sides were level with five minutes to go when Adam Walsh latched onto a great ball from team captain Eoin Roche to put the Rovers in front. Brian Roche grabbed his third and the Rovers 16th point to secure he first 2 league points of the season. It was a great game of hurling played by two very committed sides. A great start to the SHL campaign and a great atmosphere in Fermoy last Sunday. Tanks to Brendan Buckley and Jerry Galvin for Car Parking arrangements.

Our next game in the league is against Ballincollig (away) on Thursday 16th March at 8pm. Our Senior Hurling Team captain for the year will be Eoin Roche and the vice-captain will be Shane O Connor.
UNDER 18HURLING.

We travelled to Carrigtwohill last Saturday to play our first under 18 hurling league game. The home team were fast out of the blocks and had 2-1 on the board before we got our first score. It was our first game since our County semi final defeat last year and unfortunately the rustiness was showing. Carrig hit the net two more times before halftime to leave them ahead by 4-05 to 0-7 at the short whistle. The second half was much better as our lads were scoring some fine points. Although we outscored the home team 17 scores to 14 but goals win games. It was a good opener to the League and great to be hurling in March.

On this coming Saturday March 11th we have a football game v Cobh away at 1 o clock. On St.Patrick’s Day Friday March 17th we’ve Hurling v Aghada at home at 1 o clock.
EAST CORK JHL DIVISION 1.
Our Junior A hurlers had the opening game of the year on Monday night in Riverstown, under lights. It was a lovely evening for hurling and the pitch was in amazing condition for early March. This was our first game back in Division 1 after a couple years in Division 2 and we had several young players making their first appearance in the Junior grade. Sars got the opening point of the game straight from the throw in but we responded well with Conor Barry getting the next two points from placed balls. Sars then enjoyed a period of dominance and got the next 5 points without response. Conor got another free and then both teams exchanged the next 5 points leaving Sars leading at half time 9 points to 5. We started the 2nd half brightly and scores started coming a bit more easily to us. With 15 minutes left the margin was reduced to a single point with Sars leading 11 points to 10. The next 6 points were shared between the two teams, the lads tired hard we couldn't find the levelling score. With just a point between the sides with time up Sars got the final two points of the game in added time to win on a score-line of 16 points to 13. UNDER 13’S AT THE SEASIDE
Our under 13 boys kick off their Rebel Og Premier Football League campaign on Saturday next March 11th away to Youghal at 5pm. Training continues on Wednesday at 6:30
LADIES CLUB FUNDRAISER.
The Bride Rovers Ladies Football and Camogie Club will hold a Puc Fada and Cic Fada competition on St Patrick’s Day (Friday 17th March) in the Juvenile Field at 2pm. HEALTHY CLUBS.
The six-week series of Monday night walks ended on Monday night with a cuppa for all. Thanks to all who participated and the Organising Committee. The venture has been a huge success and depending on feedback from participants the Club may organise further activities.
FOOTBALL THIS WEEKEND.
It’s back to Junior Football action this weekend. On Sunday at 11.30 we have a home game against Youghal. The game is fixed for Pynes Field. On Wednesday week March 22nd we have another Div. 1 JFL game when we are away to Carrigtwohill with at a 7.30pm start, under lights in Carrig.
SCOR NA BPAISTI.
The Nuachleas (Novelty Act) group from Bishop O Brien NS took part in the East Cork final in Watergrasshill on Sunday evening last. They pt on a great performance but were not in the prize-winners enclosure. Well done to all concerned and Ms Kennelly and the School Staf for their huge input into the Scor this year. For many of the young boys and girls it was their first time ‘on stage’ and they really enjoyed it so they’ll be back. Thanks also to the parents for bringing the cast members to School early over the past few weeks for 8.30 am practise.
REBELS v MODEL COUNTY HURLERS.
On Next Sunday in Pairc Ui Chaoimh at 3.45 the Cork hurlers take on Wexford in the penultimate Round of the Allianz national Hurling League. Unbeaten Cork are playing well but could face a tough task against the men from the proud hurling county of Wexford. Smarting from a 6 25 to 1 18 hammering by Clare in their last game Wexford will surely ‘turn up’ with a big performance next Sunday. Best wishes to Brian and Eoin Roche and all their Rebel colleagues. Cork are away to Clare in Cusack Park, Ennis on Sunday week March 19th.

Rebels’ Bounty is the monthly draw for Cork GAA Members run by the Cork Bounty Board, and is an important fundraising initiative within the Bride Rovers club, as much of the ticket sale revenue is returned to our Club to support activities and developments.

INTER COUNTY UNDER 20 HURLING.
Cork will have 4 games in the Munster under 20 hurling Round Robin campaign. The Rebels have their first two games at home in Pairc Ui Chaoimh v Waterford on March 29th at 7pm and against Tipp on April 5th at 7.30. The ‘away’ game are in Sixmilebridge against Clare on April 19th and in the Gaelic Grounds v Limerick on April 28th.
DIN JOE BUCKLEY RIP.
The death occurred last week of Denis Joseph -Din Joe, Buckley of Ballyglissane. Educated in Bartlemy National School Din Joe was a talented sportsman in his younger days. While it was as an athlete, with Grange Athletic Club, that Din Joe achieved great success he was also a talented hurler. In 1959 his goal-scoring ability with the Junior Hurling team was seen to good effect. The St. Bartholomew’s team defeated Carrignavar and Killeagh in the championship but lost in the East Cork semi final to Whites Cross. The Carrignavar game was played in the Hill on May 3rd and our lineout was Joe Browne, Tom Barry, Willie Cotter, Mick Gubbins, Willie Sheehan, Paddy O Regan, Jimmy O Brien, Tony O Brien, John O Brien, Gerald O Sullivan, Din Joe Buckley, Mossy O Regan, Sean Leahy, Denis O Sullivan, Paddy O Brien; Sub Patsy Brennock. Din Joe scored 3 goals in that game, other scorers were Tony O Brien 2 1, John O Brien 0 2, Paddy O Reagan 1 0, Paddy O Brien 1 0, Denis O Sullivan 1 0, Mossy O Regan 2 1. It was Carrignavar’s second team and St Bartholomew’s won by 11 9 to 3 2. In a practise game v Fermoy Din Joe scored 2 goals, two more against the Hill in a tournament and a goal in games against Tallow and Knockraha. Interestingly in the 1889 Cork County Senior Football Final (O Brien Board) Dromtarriffe played Rathcormac, Tim Kiely – Din Joe’s grandfather played with Dromtarriffe whilst ‘Old Ned Hoskins of Bluebell played with Bartlemy. Din Joe is survived by his brother Ted and his first cousins the Kiely family, to all of whom we offer our sympathy. Din Joe was laid to rest in Gortroe cemetery where his parents Tim and Mary(nee Kiely) are also interred.
COLLEGES HURLING.
Well done to St Colmans who had a great 1 17 to 1 12 win over Midleton CBS in the O Callaghan Cup (Cork Colleges Senior Hurling) Semi Final. In the other seme Gaelcolaiste Mhuire an Mhainistir Thuaidh (North Mon) beat Rochestown by 2 19 to 2 14 so it’s a Colmans v North Mon Final
