REDFM Division 4 Hurling League

Lisgoold 2-24 Youghal 0-15

At Lisgoold on  March 5th 2023

Lisgoold collected their first brace of points in the hurling league this season with a solid win over a very spirited Youghal side. In the opening exchanges there was a flurry of points from both sides. The usual suspects for Lisgoold with John Cashman, Liam O’Shea and Mark Hegarty contributing to our tally as we reached the 15-minute mark it was 0-7 to 0-6 to the blue and gold. Further points followed from both sides after this, but the first major was raised by the hosts near half time. A long ball into the area was not cleared efficiently by the visitors and the opportunity arose and was taken by James O’Driscoll. So, approaching the half-time Jaffa we had a reasonably good lead of five points (1-12 to 0-10).

In the second half Lisgoold exploded out of the blocks and coupled with solid defending from Kieran Cashman, John Cronin and Cathal Cashman our attack was very good in the first fifteen minutes. Good team play and constant allowed chances aplenty and a second major was raised again by young O’Driscoll to put Lisgoold in a very commanding position mid-way through the second half (2-17 to 0-13). From here on until the final whistle it was only going to be one winner in this contest, both sides opted to empty their respective benches and the match peeped out to a conclusion. It was a good win and a good start to the league but alas it is only round one and only time and more games we will know Lisgoold’s true form. As for now its onwards and upwards knowing the first two points are on the board.

Imokilly Division 4 Hurling League

Lisgoold 2-18 Dungourney 3-8

At Dungourney on March 5th 2023

A swashbuckling performance by our second string ensured the club finished the weekend on a high as they produced a thrilling away win. From start to finish this was an excellent performance it which both sides produced some wonderful scores. The game had a bit of rough tumble and at times it did threaten to boil over however that didn’t stop our lads from producing a classy performance over the hour. A tigerish Cian Healy, Sean Coleman, Luke Walsh and the wily Moss O’Connell had stirling performances in defence, but the real class displays were in the forward line. Bill Whelan, Jamie Browne played great games, but it was the performance of Caomhán O’Sé that stood out a mile. A personal contribution of 2-3 at number 11, Caomhán’s experience guile and willingness to get stuck into the opposition made his performance an easy decision for man of the match. It was a superb individual display.

Dungourney had their chances to steal ahead but they were rebutted ferociously by an outstanding Lisgoold defence. In truth this was a great result for the second string and may

point the way for more positive days ahead. Also, a great sign from this encounter was the debutant of young selector whom whilst is in recovery from a knee operation (and the club wish him well on this) was Cathal Hickey. It was clear from the off that the enthusiasm and drive from young hickey flowed throughout the team in this match. Whilst it is important that he returns to the field for the first team it’s obvious that a career in the Bainisteoir ‘Bib’ is destined to happen. So, well done to the second string who capped a good week for the club with a great result.

Under 21 Football Championship

Lisgoold 1-15 Killavullen 1-4

At Lisgoold on March 5th 2023

A very young understrength u21 team led by Dara Kiniry, Laura Murphy, Eilish Hegarty, Rachael and Clodagh Moynihan played great free flowing football and totally outplayed a gallant Killavullen team in the first round of the Cork County U21 Championship. The young guns from the Under 16 panel stood up and played extremely well and were assisted greatly by our gallant minors. In what was a superb team performance they were very dismissive of their north cork opponents and will look forward to a county quarter-final in a few weeks’ time. They are due to play the winners of Banteer vs Mitchelstown in a home fixture. Well done ladies it was great to see.
