Development Information Meeting

The club is hosting a special open meeting on Friday 2nd December at 8.30pm to give a full run down on all the progress made with the club development so far. We will go through all the finances raised and there will be a discussion held on the future direction of the development as we move on to the next stage. The new pitch has been laid and we will hopefully have it running by next summer. There is much more planned to do. We look forward to constructing a new walkway, astro turf pitch and carpark in the next stages. Discussions need to be had on the exact placings of these facilities on the site. Everyone is welcome to attend the meeting. Thank you again for all the amazing support that the community has given the GAA club this year.

Successful AGM

We held the Club AGM last Friday evening. It was great to see a big crowd in attendance in the community centre. Con Lawlor in his secretary’s report commended all volunteers for their work over the last 12 months. He reminded us that the GAA club needs new blood to help out in the running of the club and encouraged anyone to get involved. Mick Spillane outlined the finances of the club in his Treasurer’s report. Mick has proven astute with the purse and the club’s bank accounts are looking in good order. Ronan Fenton, treasurer of the development committee and Donal O’Leary, treasurer of the lotto also outlined healthy balances. Ciaran McGann and Pat O’Neill gave reports on the ultimately fruitless endeavours of our adult playing teams this year. Ciaran reported how our Premier intermediate hurlers were knocked out by a strong Castlemartyr team in the semi-final by 4 points. He thanked his management team of Seán Kenny, Peter Murphy, Brendan Hoare and Johnny Crowley for all the work that they had put in this year. He indicated that they would not be involved with the Intermediate team next year. We want to thank the lads for all the work they put in over the last 3 years. Your dedication to Castlelyons was phenomenal. John McCarthy in his chairman’s address thanked everyone involved in the development of the pitch. He lauded all the hard work put in by the contractors, people on committees, and those who helped collect donations. He thanked everyone who had donated so far as there would be no development without their generosity. John finished by calling on the GAA to reinstate the u21 grade at club level. Small clubs like ours are finding it difficult to retain players when there is no

grade to bridge them between the juvenile and adult clubs. It is a sad inditement of the current system when there are players for Castlelyons who didn’t play a single game for their club in 2022. Carol Shanahan from the Friends of Dean and Padraig thanked the GAA club for the support shown during the year. John McCarthy thanked Carol and offered support to the group whenever it would be needed. The AGM finished with the election of officers. John McCarthy, Con Lawlor and Mick Spillane were returned to their roles of chairman, secretary and treasurer respectively. Ronan Fenton was elected as assistant treasurer. Eoin Barry and Peter Murphy return as PRO and registrar. East Cork board delegates of Michael Barrett and Willie Casey remain the same. County Board delegates stay as Kieran McGann and John Barrett. Colm Spillane agreed to take over the role of safety officer from his brother Anthony. There are still a number of roles left unfulfilled and there was a robust discussion after the election about the recruitment of officers in the club. It was noted that it is an issue for many rural clubs. We had many volunteers to be a part of the 2023 committee which was an encouraging sign.

Lotto

There was no winner of this week’s lotto Jackpot of €20,000. Numbers drawn were 7, 13, 16 and 30. The lucky dip winners were Pat O’Neill, Kevin Barry, Ita Ryan, Julie Lennon, Laura Shanahan, Barry O’Connell, Dan Cotter and Ann O’Connor. Next week’s draw will take place on Monday 5th December at 8pm in the Community Centre.
