Rebel Óg fé16 East Div1 Football Final

Eochaill 4-6 Carrigaline 2-10 A toss of a coin decided home venue for this final on Saturday 19th of November last and with Youghal winning that advantage; it was a testament to the ground-staff that the game was able to be played in Copperalley, considering the rain that had fallen in the past number of weeks.

It was always going to be a tough task for this group of lads to keep the underage unbeaten record intact against a well-drilled Carrigaline who competed in Premier 2 & Premier 1 at fé17 and fé15 respectively. It was Youghal who drew first blood as Jamie Lenane rattled the net after 15 minutes, but Carrigaline responded well and got a goal of their own. The visitor then settled the better of the two teams and they led at the break by 1-6 to 1-3. As the second half began, Carrigaline picked up where they left off and 8 minutes in; they led by 7. Youghal kept plugging away and managed to reduce the deficit to 4 when Brian Lynch found the net with a quarter of an hour to go. Carrigaline continued to cause problems for the hosts and with 5 minutes remaining, it looked like they would take the spoils. Trailing by 6 points, the fresh legs introduced in the Youghal team sprung some life into their attacks and a Liam Durkin point brought them within 4 points as the game headed towards injury-time. Testament to this group of players, they never gave up and when James Coyne sent a lofted pass into the danger zone in the 61st minutes, a goalmouth scramble resulted in the green flag being raised. With only seconds remaining, and Youghal now a point behind; they had to win the kick out. They duly obliged and that never-say-die attitude proved to be decisive when Jamie Lenane bore down on goal to slot past the helpless Carrigaline goalkeeper. The Youghal boys now led by 2! An off the ball scuffle resulted in a red card for both sides in the dying stages but that stoppage only killed off any chance Carrigaline had to get the ball into the Youghal half and moments later, referee Pa Beausang blew the full-time whistle. Elation ensued and the general consensus was that the result was nothing short of daylight robbery; however, winning is a habit and it must be acknowledged that the young Youghal men never threw in the towel, even when many on the bank headed for the exit gate. Foireann Eochaille: Dylan Hennessy, Liam Durkin (0-2, 1f), Ronan O’Brien, Gearoid Geary, Senan O’Brien, Marty Desmond, Jack Dineen, Fionn Hill, James Coyne, Dylan Lyons, Brian Lynch (capt.) Rebel Óg Fé 16 Premier 2 County Hurling Final

Eochaill 2-11 Shandrum 1-12 A real nip-and-tuck affair was the order of business on Saturday night last in Bishopstown as these two teams faced off in what turned out to be a cracking game of hurling. The tit-for-tat early point exchanges meant that the sides were level on 5 occasions in the first half. A Brian Lynch rocket of a goal from the edge of the D on 14 minutes as well as points from Dylan Lyons (2), Jamie Lenane, Lynch, and a monster free from goalkeeper Oisin Walsh meant that the Youghal boys went into the half time dressing room a point to the good, 1-5 to 0-7. The score line only told half the story though as strong steely hard work by the Youghal midfield and defence and midfield meant that Shandrum’s chances at goal were few and far between. Upon resumption, the half time team talk in the Shandrum dressing room seemed to have the desired effect (momentarily, at least) as they hit the from with a flurry of scores, a goal and two points in quick succession, saw them take the lead as the game entered the final 10 minutes. Cian Galvin & Jack Dineen won many a dirty ball in the middle of the park while Ronan O’Brien and Marty Desmond were ever reliable in the heart of the Youghal defence. In fact, just like the first half; while the forwards were taking the headlines, it was the entire Youghal backline from 1 to 9 that made all the difference to quell a talented Shandrum attacking threat, time after time. With game firmly in the balance as it entered the closing stages; Oisin Walsh sent another huge ball down into the heart of the Shandrum danger zone. The ball found its way into the paw of sharpshooter, Dylan Lyons who batted past the keeper to rattle the Shandrum net. Further points from Lyons and Lynch kept Shandrum at arm’s length until the referee reached for his whistle and thus concluded the most memorable year in the history of Eochaill Óg. Foireann Eocaille: Oisin Walsh (0-1f), Liam Durkin, Marty Desmond, Gearoid Geary, Senan O’Brien, Ronan O’Brien, Fionn Hill, Jack Dineen, Cian Galvin, Dylan Lyons (1-5, 2f), Brian Lynch (1-3), James Coyne, Jamie Lenane (0-1), Luke Lenane, Zack Skehan. Fir Ionaid: Diego Trossero for Luke Lenane (39 mins), Noah Hegarty (0-1) for Zack Skehan (44 mins), Ewan McCarthy, Ralph Cashman, Cal Cashman, Paddy Nicholson, Dylan Hennessy, Finn Coleman, Jayden Casey
