Niall O’Leary Stars as Castlelyons are crowned U21 A Hurling Champions

Castlelyons have been 2019 Ben Purcell Cup winners. They defeated Aghada in the final of the u21 AHC on a score of 2-19-0-8. Cork’s Niall O’Leary was superb at centre back while Keith O’Leary notched 0-9.

The opening quarter of the game was plagued by very wet, blustery conditions with both sides struggling to get to grips with the game. Charlie Terry was the pivot of Aghada’s attack. Terry scored all four of Aghada’s first half scores, as the side in green and white trailed Castlelyons at the break on a score of 0-8-0-4. Captain Keith O’Leary and Dave Morrison were superb in the first half for Castlelyons who were playing in purple! O’Leary notched 0-4, as for Morrison, he contributed 0-2. 

Despite the lead, the game was well and truly in the balance. However, the third quarter from Castlelyons was nothing short of sensational. Shane Cotter and Mark Spillane both added their names to the score sheet as the men in purple raced into a 0-14-0-6 lead with fifteen left on the clock. 

Charlie Terry reduced the deficit back down to seven after twenty minutes of play however just three minute later the ball was in the back of the Aghada net. David Morrison was the beneficiary after the ball broke around the Aghada area. The momentum completely swung in the way of Castlelyons. Aghada notched their final score of the game a minute later as ‘Lyons closed out the game with a flurry. The 2010 U21B Hurling Champions scores 1-5 without reply in the final seven minutes of play with Niall O’Learys stunning goal closing out proceedings. The points came courtesy of Keith O’Leary, Ian Riordan, Shane Cotter and James Kearney as Castlelyons finished the affair with seven different scorers.

It finished in Dungourney in the U21 AHC Final Castlelyons 2-19-0-8, securing a stunning seventeen point victory. Castlelyons will face Newcestown in the first round of the County Championship next Saturday.
