Kieran Murphy CRY104FM Match Report

Imokilly have progressed to the Senior Hurling Championship semi finals defeating Sarsfields on a score of 1-17-0-10 in very wet conditions in Pairc Ui Rinn.

Missed opportunities for Sars was the story of the first half. The East Cork side looked much the better side in the opening phase however they didn’t make it count, registering ten wides!  Nine of which were from play. They were dominating possession only allowing imokilly to take two shots from play in the first. It took the defending champions fourteen long minutes to get their first score through a penalty from Declan Dalton.

The weather conditions did neither teams forward line any favour as scores were few and far between in the early goings of the fixture. Sars strung three points together on the bounce in the opening twelve minutes however it could have been much, much more, notching three wides in the same period. The scores came courtesy of Luke Hackett, James Sweeney and Daniel Kearney. With fourteen minutes of the game played, Imokilly opened their account for the encounter through Dalton from the penalty spot. The penalty stemmed from a shot from Seamus Harnedy which dropped short into the paw of Dalton who was fouled inches from the goal line.

The subsequent second quarter saw the East Cork Divisional side our score Sars 0-4-0-2. Three of those were frees from Fr O’Neills man Dalton while the other cane through Shane Hegarty of Dungourney for Imokilly’s only score from the play in the opening half!

At half time, Imokilly led despite Sars domination on a score of 1-4-0-5. Thirteen shots from play to two tells you the story of the abundance of missed chances in the opening half for the 2014 champions.

The reigning champions stepped it up a gear at the beginning of the second half scoring five unanswered points in the opening seven minutes. Aghada’s Will Leahy got two from play Dalton, Harnedy and Mark O’Keeffe. Sarsfields eventually found their feet in the second notching three points in a row through substitute Eoin O’Sullivan, William Kearney and Jack O’Connor.

The sides went back and forth in the final quarter however the real talking points of the final phase were the two red cards for Sars as midfielder Will Kearney and James Sweeney both received their marching orders for a second bookable offense. Three points from Dalton and one from Harnedy rounded off a hard fought win for the defending champions as they now progress to the semi finals where the Barrs await them. Sars could feel they left the game behind them after a blistering first half keeping Imokilly’s scoring down to 1-4 with only one coming from play while also taking thirteen shots from play. It finished in Pairc Ui Rinn in the Senior Hurling Championship Imokilly 1-17-0-10 Sarsfields.
